I cant help myself. I go into the hangar to get a Jabo and lately cant pick anything else.
Maybe its the sound of the engines, the flight characteristics, the bombload load, the laserguns, the incredible climb rate, with 2,000lbs of bombs and 10 5" rockets, that allows me 10,000' by the time I hit the dar ring. Maybe its the range of the P-38, or the history, or the fact Bong flew it. No doubt the cool looks are part of it. And its fast. Not super fast but "sneaky fast". It rolls well, dives like a banshee, and is a fairly good turner.
I LOVE the P-38!

You should check into joining S.A.P.P. if you are not a member yet.
You sound like you would fit right in with those comments about the P-38. :aok

The P38 is a fighter bomber? What are these bombs and rockets of which you speak?
I prefer bending the wings and the stick in my 38 :)

Its real fun, this was supposed to be my P-38 month, but I switched to flying the Zero to practice for the scenario instead. All that really means is I'll fly the P-38 an entire other month and I'll get 6 weeks in it instead of 4. :rock
To me four 50s in the nose and always at convergeance is much better than 6 50s spread out on the wings... and to top it off it has a cannon as well. I always take the 500 rounds per 50 and then spray like the 14 yo squeaker at the paintball field with daddy's credit card. Fun!

Its both, its everything. I dont believe its an airplane but maybe a God. Not a"God God" but like a "God of airplanes".
Thinking about it is enough to giveya wood.

I've been flying the P-38L the last week or so and tend to get lit up quite a bit.
Maybe I need more pratice although I'm not a very good pilot...... :D

Thou will sortie forth an do destruction to the enemy, both heart, soul and property.
Nothing stikes FEAR into the enemy than looking up and seeing a squadron of HEAVY P-38's howling down on them. :devil
TAKE A RIDE ON HEAVY METAL! :aok

We're gonna sway you to the ways of the 38 yet Jester :)
Nothing makes the enemy laugh harder then seeing a squadron of 80th Headhunters in heavy P38s howling down on them :D

Seen some of the 49th moving mud with the P-38J, here's a tip for A2G in the J. Do not use rockets if you plan on fighting your way home after your A2G run. The bazooka tubes add unnecessary drag and makes the P-38J rather sluggish at low speeds.

Thanks for letting me try them out. They break up just as nice as 38s :)

Was just thinking the same thing. How else does Guppy get all those "landing" photos?
-
His film crew must make a helluva a lot off him.

He's a penny pinching tyrant. The only thing he pays us in is beatings if we don't snap the perfect picture.

They only mud I move is the mud that moves when my 38 goes splat. I prefer air to air. Not everyone in the 49th is a mud turtle.

Wish I did. Never did learn how to fly her.
-
Best way to learn is to mix it up and don't be afraid to get shot down. The P38 doesn't reward timidness and rewards aggressive flying, especially in the long run.

you dont really love the 38, sapp has just implanted a chip in your brain that makes you think you like it, its all one big lie all part of sapp's plan to take over ah2

I like my light bomber. What's the problem?
Could be the stuff flying past you is just 38G parts falling off my plane.

Big Brother is watching you.
BUT I got a question. I was looking up some tests on the P-38J and some past-posts. Apparently the P-38J, 25% fuel I think in AH, stalls at 98 mph with full flaps, gear according to http://electraforge.com/brooke/flightsims/aces_high/stallSpeedMath/stallSpeedMath.html (http://electraforge.com/brooke/flightsims/aces_high/stallSpeedMath/stallSpeedMath.html). The flight manual (calibrated) is 89 mph. That's about a 10 mph difference. According to a bunch of tests and some posts I found by WW.. still trying to find it... but the plane's supposed to stall at about 60 - 65 mph dirty?
http://www.wwiiaircraftperformance.org/p-38/p-38-67869.html (http://www.wwiiaircraftperformance.org/p-38/p-38-67869.html) Power-on stalls at 53 mph. I doubt it's calibrated.
http://www.wwiiaircraftperformance.org/p-38/p-38-28392.html (http://www.wwiiaircraftperformance.org/p-38/p-38-28392.html) Power-on stalls (2400 rpm) at 60 mph.
Edited for typos, links.

Who you kidding :)
There are few very good F4U sticks, but I sure don't mind taking my 38G up against the rest of the F4U drivers.

i'm sure any of you guys can kick my butt but all things being equal, the f4u owns the 38! ;)

Not so...But, I don't want to make this a pissing contest of "my dad can beat up your dad"...
So, I'll just give you the facts....
Disregarding the F4U4, the P-38 out climbs, out accelerates, is a tad faster at altitude, and has a more useful gun package..
A smart/experienced 38 pilot also has a bag of tricks that an F4U could not possibly compete with..
Two engines make a big difference..
Some people just don't understand the 38 and think it's a big easy target...
Well, for some one like myself who's still learning the 38, yeah, I may be.. But for the guys who I seek instruction from.....Well, their reputation speaks for itself... :salute
Accksssxxxx....Now I'm on a mission.....Death to all F4U's!!!!! lol :furious

I actually upped a J clean last night with the intent of just fighting in it. I came in high, 15k, but started compressing during a B&Z in it, OK a change in plans. I ended up getting really good angles on 109s, 190s, LA-7s, and got one kill tho most of the time I had to pull up before I could close due to cons dropping on me. I ended up spinning around a base taking shots with the lasers when they presented themselves and somehow was able to land with 2 kills.
The clean "J" seems to turn better then the L does. Anyhoo it was fun and a change of pace from bomb-trucking the P-38.
