Pennsylvania's great for place names. I particularly love the irony of "California University of Pennsylvania" and "Indiana University of Pennsylvania" -- both of which are part of the PA's state university system.

Oh, you mean Hershey...as in the candy bar or the chocolate.  Now I get it.  See, you spelled the name of the city wrong so I didn't understand what you meant because I assumed we were on the funny name thread and I assumed that part of the funny would include the funny name itself and that the critical part of that funny would be to spell it accurately, thus preserving the funny nature of the name. I was wrong.

You may be right, sir!

I can only imagine the logo on the cheerleader's outfits at the local high school, much less how the announcer handles it during when they broadcast the games on the local radio station.

Must sound like Joe Pecci with an Aussie accent.  I'd love to have an aircheck of THAT!

The name translates as 'St Mary's church in the hollow of the white hazel near a rapid whirlpool and the church of St Tysilio of the red cave'.

Originally called Llanfair Pwllgwyngyll, which means 'The Mary church by the pool near the white hazels' the village was renamed in the 19th Century.

This was around the time when the railway was built between Chester and Holyhead at the beginning of the 1850s. A local committee was put together to try and encourage trains, travellers and 19th Century tourists to stop at the village in order to help develop the village as a commercial and tourist centre. It is believed that the name Llanfairpwllgwyngyllgogerychw yrndrobwllllantysiliogogogoch was invented by a cobbler from Menai Bridge; little did he know that he had implemented one of the most successful tourist marketing plans of all time. Today the village is signposted as Llanfairpwllgwyngyll and is known to locals as Llanfairpwll or Llanfair.)

There are two towns in Iowa named Manly and Fertile.  Before I was born a guy and gal got married.  The headline in the paper read "Manly Man Marries Feritle Woman."  Has been the laugh up there for years.

What Cheer, Iowa another funny name.

Another story about a headine in Illinois; "Normal man marries Oblong woman" (Normal/Oblong, Illiniois)
