Don't laugh. Most ww2 fighters had rear view mirrors. I assume this would be a programming nightmare, but just food for thought.

This one's been covered many times. Do a search.

It's his wish, and it doesn't hurt to bring it up again. So ignore the search comment.
I agree they would be cool.

Yes, I seem to recall the old proverb about the sqeeky wheel getting the grease.

Not in this instance. Hitech has stated that to do a rear view mirror would halve frame rates (it would have to render 2 point of views, rather than just one). Besides, given screen resolutions it would be so pixelly smallilated as to be useless anyway.
So (if he'd have looked) he could have saved the time typing.

Actually, BaldEagl's reply was very appropriate. If the OP had bothered to do a search of these very forums about having rear view mirrors in the planes that had them, he would have read why it isn't possible in the game. That would have resulted in the OP not needing to post this wish as it would never be added to the game.
ack-ack

Actually I don't need to search anything. Tooooooo many arm chair generals in AH.....lol. I now have the information I requested and for my part, the subject is closed.

Just to add a comment that I received in correspondence with a 10 victory ace who flew P-51As, Spits, P-47s and P-51Bs - he said rear view mirrors were virtually worthless in real life combat. Others have also said that if you actually saw something in them it was too late already.
Another free sim does a half-way job of modeling rear view mirrors by displaying a sky-like image, that displays movement, but that is not the actual view aft. So it gives the illusion of being a functional mirror, but you can actually see nothing real behind you, lol.

They're waiting for the bearings to fall out.

Kinda what I was thinking. Thinking the mirror(s) would hinder vision to your high 12 o'clock. A definite negative during ACM.

I've read the same numerous times.

Unless it was blocking out the (uber)blinding sun.

I always thought the squeaky wheel gets the pink slip

Rear view mirrors only show a little bit of your six, it would just be better to just turn around and look to see if someone on you. Also, as mentioned, by the time you saw the enemy in the mirror it was already too late.

Yes, but I'd rather have that little bit of my 6 right there, instead of having to manually change positions in my corsair :]
Plus, yes, it'd be late, but evasive manuvering would still be in time, which would give you a chance.
-
i saw a documentary, maybe it was gunter rall, not sure. who commented how ineffective mirrors were and with how they shook so that by the time you'd see something in them it was time to bail out.
-
There's only ONE way you can improve the rear view of a corsair with mirrors.

Frankly, looking behind you with the numberpad or joystick buttons is gonna be better than any mirrors. Helps your SA too.

Yeah, My SA's pretty good, but in a plane with poor rear sight, i.e. the corsair... manually changing positions with keypad and number keys (gotta look to both right and left side...) would take longer, with less sight than just taking a peek to the mirrors...
I see how it could be a programming, FR, and gameplay disaster, but I'd love to see it implimented without these issues :]
I mean, in buffs we've already got a rear view...
