How do you restore IE7 to default settings? Something is messed up between IE7 and UAC (I guess) and my browser reports 'Protected Mode: Off'
ANyone know how to fix that?

I had the same thing happen. I fixed it by re-installing the OS. I am sure there would be another way, but I did not have time to dig through and find it.

tools
internet options
advanced
reset

I am pretty sure he would have tried that. I did. and it did not make any difference. Although with Vista I should not assume anything will act the same from one computer to another.

Vista is doing what it was designed to do I guess. UAC and the security settings are a handful to think about. I tried resetting as you suggested and a long time ago but that didnt work. I brought my laptop in and copied the settings from it and nothing. So I did a system restore and that worked. I guess Im lucky I didnt make too many changes beforehand because the earliest restore point was the only one that would fix the problem. From now on when I make changes I will use True Images Try & Decide so if something goes wrong I dont have to sweat it.
Skuzzy I dont want to jump to conclusions but it looks like once you decide to elevate security then your on your own from then on. I really dont want to test it but I wanted to share my impression. Im wondering if people that use Norton have this problem because doesnt Norton more or less take over?

Norton introduces a whole new level of problems with Vista. Absolutely has to be the worse proram you can install under Vista.

I had firewall at the time. I really think you can make Vista even more secure than it comes and IE7 will report Protected Mode: Off.
I got a free copy of Norton 360 with a cluster of 10 hard drives I bought. Its still unopened.
