Title: Any 91-93 Accord owners here?
Post by: mg1942 on July 30, 2008, 05:22:35 PM
I'm thinking about getting a cheap 2nd car that I can put some subtle mods in it.  Is 91-93 Honda Accord tough and bullet-proof as some people suggest?

Is yours manual or auto?

I heard that 6th generation Accords (97-02) have auto trans issues and recalls when 5 speed was introduced :noid

hondas are ultra super duper reliable.............

untill you start trying to make serious horsepower with them. then they become like every other import and break........

I have a 6th gen honda and ya some had tranny probs, mostly heat related so if you live in the south get a trans cooler.

1 thing to watch for, timing belt and waterpump, make sure both were changed at recommended times, hondas have interference engines and if the timing belt goes, well, lets just say wallet flush.

Really the are great cars and with proper maintanence you should have no probs getting 2 or 3 hundred thousand miles out of them. they do seem to wear out tierods and swaybar links fast,or maybe it's got something to do with the way I drive..... :lol

Automatic.  I bought it used and made the mistake of assuming the previous owner had changed the transmission fluid at one point or another.  Turns out last year when I did it for the first time it looked like it had never been done before.  It was very sludgy.

'03 Civic Hybrid 5 speed (48-78 mpg). Only issue I had was oxygen sensors which went out at 23k. Warranty replacement. Its small for me but commuting to work it makes sense. I buy gas once a month whether I need to or not.  :D

I had a '91 Accord auto that I put about 30k on in 6 months before giving it to my next door neighbors 16 year old daughter before leaving on my last deployment to Iraq. On the highway at 70 mph it would get a solid 35 mpg. The only thing I did was change fluids and put on new tires, had 167k on it when I gave it away and is close to 200k on it now. I paid $150.00 for it, just a terrific little car...

Aren't those Hondas on the most frequently stolen list?

Mav is correct. ;)  I've had a '93 Accord since 2000 and it still runs great.  166,000 miles.  Though it's not my primary transportation, I've never seen a reason to get rid of it.  It's waaayyy paid off and everything to this day still works on it.

You can see my 93 Honda accord in the driveway here. It has 187000 on it and still runs strong 27-30 mpg (automatic) depending how I drive.

I have a '91 Acura Integra RS for a "beater".   You may or may not know Acuras are Hondas with different name plates.  Straight up Honda engine (1.8L 16V DOHC) with 5 spd.  191,000 miles and runs like a champ.  No squeaks or rattles...everything works as advertised.  Temperatures and pressures normal and stable.  No unusual fluid consumption.  Gets 28-30mpg with me driving it like I stole it :D.

As mentioned before, make SURE to change timing belt and water pump (water pump on my type engine is timing belt-driven) at least every 60K miles.  Failing to do so WILL COMPLETELY DESTROY the engine.

sadly yes, it's up there with '89 Camry and F150s

Those late 80s / early 90s sedans must be too good... even to this day :D

funny thing was there used to be a turbocharged civic wagon running at atco. when it would make an entire pass, it actually ran low 12's/high 11's. very respectable. except for the fact that it exploded something every 3rd or 4th run. :rofl

no one really wanted to line up behind him(due to the impending oil down) or next to him(due to the impending flying parts)

ya know..i'm not at work, so i can't look it up, but i think that year honda had 10W30 motor oil in the transaxle.....

generally, hondas are great dependable cars. if i were married and buying a car for the wife, she'd have a honda, so i never get "the call"

good call!!!!!

all honda engines are "interference" engines. the $400-500 timing belt/waterpump job will turn into about $1100 depending on how many valves got bent.

Truth.  Have had 2 Hondas for winter beaters and the engines outlast the rest of the car.  You couldn't give me one with an auto though, they are the definition of "slush boxes" and completely gutless.

91 accord 2dr manual trans 75K, the manual trans uses motor oil, the autos use ATF, just normal maintenance except for the radiator, top shell cracked at 74K, got a new one at NAPA for $100. I also replaced the tape deck with a CD player.

bought the car new when i worked for a honda dealer.

No.  Mine's an early Integra.  The later ones got VTEC engines.  Mines no slouch for a normally aspirated small displacement 4 cyl but the VTEC Integras make impressive power for their size.

I'm not into street racing and agree that one should not try to squeeze a ton of power out of an engine not designed for it.  Most people knock Japanese cars for coming apart when heavily modified but the truth is a small American car would not last a fraction of the time with the same power adders applied.  Pick up an old Ford Escort or Dodge Neon and see how long they last on nitrous.

Kids pick Hondas because they generally have a better power-to-weight ratio to begin with and lets face it, are built better than small domestic cars.
