Title: Open Office
Post by: Wayout on August 02, 2008, 08:40:39 AM
Does anyone use/know anything about Open Office Suite?  If I put it on my Kids computer as he heads off to school are there any 'quirks' he should know about.    Thanks

My kids use it. They don't have any problems with it.

The only quirk I've found was with Word 2K7 documents. It's possible to embed documents within documents and Open Office can't deal with that.

I love open office...

Use it and don't worry about Microsoft being compatible.  Schools etc should support free software above bloated priced Microsoft crap anyway.  You know excel can't plot but like 255 points, Calc has no such limit for one.

LOL good idea tell the school you will send in files the teachers can't read..
Openoffice should be good for basic things.    Works qbout 80% of the time for me

OO is a great piece of software considering it's free.

I experimented with OO in an attempt to not have to buy MS Office 2007 on a new notebook.  I found it worked well and did enough for me as long as I didn't have to interact (swap files) with other MS Office users.  I found enough quirks, mostly minor but still a bother, interacting with MS Office users that I bought MS Office 2007.  Very happy now even with having to learn the new Office 2007 user interface.  For a student, MS Office literally costs almost nothing (huge discounts for students).  I wouldn't send a kid to college with anything else.  YMMV.
