sp3 wants to install good or bad in you opinion on xp

i have been running SP3 for XP and have had no problems out of it

I have done one install of SP3 and it borked up the computer so bad I had to re-install the OS from scratch.  Your mileage may vary.  Even after a fresh installation of the OS, it borked it up.

What I did not try, and this may be the trick, is to install all the patches to SP2, then install SP3.  MS Update wanted to do SP3 right off the get go.

Well my computer has not successfully updated on over a year. They suddenly just stopped installing.
They download and the notification always comes up but even when I shut it down it says installing updates and shuts down but they do not install.
I try to install while the system ios on, htey start and stop, and the report comes up saying they all failed.
I've even tried to do them one at a time from windows update... nothing works. What manner of magick is this?
