I honestly believe so. I've noticed that in the last year I've been a lot more careful not to waste _anything_. My electric bill has actually dropped about 50% from 2 years ago - just by setting the AC a little higher, keeping the heater off in winter, and turning off lights whenever I leave a room. I also eat leftover more often, and have been saving more money in general.

Well if you're talking about fuel I'd say no. I still see a lake full of boats aimlessly running around in circles all day and I still see SUVs barreling down the road with one woman in the drivers seat peering out from between the steering wheel and the dash. $4 a gallon apparently isn't enough to really curb anyone's habits just yet - although everyone sure does like to beoch about it...

Well I would disagree..
Here at my building in Daytona there are little trash bins from back in the 50's. They are actually in the ground with little metal lids that popped up when you stepped on a lever. Inside them is about a 25 gallon trash can one for each apartment. So back then it seems the average amount of trash produced by a single home apparently fit in one of these 25 gal trash bins.
Now this same building requires a full size trash dumpster that has to be emptied twice a week.

Around here, some are less wasteful while others just dont care. They will waste anything just because they can.
Then wonder why they have problems

A few weeks ago my brother in law got $90 for bringing in all his aluminum cans himself (Seems the price of aluminum is up)
A weeklater I heard a report on the radio that towns are upset because people are going around "stealing" aluminum cans out of the garbage (betcha someone is loosing money or they wouldnt complain about someone "stealing" garbage)
Since then. and bewcause Im in a partial war withthe company that claims to collect garbage in my town (Some weeks I see evidence of this. some weeks I dont)
I went out and bought one of these

Have dedicated one of my large trashcans (that the garbage men near destroyed) to aluminum cans
And am now following in my brother in laws footsteps.
Didnt realise how fast those buggers add up in the summertime.

We also dont have a deposit on cans and bottles.
you cant just bring em to the store.
Here you bring them in for scrap and they weigh it and buy it by the pound (Easier then counting)

Yeah, but watch their scales-I've seen as much as a -5 (they always weigh light around here) pound difference in their scales and mine.

well, the suv drivers are trying really hard to keep em. they accelerate agonizingly slow now. it sucks. if they can't afford to drive them normally, then they should sell em.

Talking about recycling they are now talking about banning plastic. My nephews buried about $5 in change in a plastic coke jug last summer at my place in Ft Myers. I moved from their and they asked me to retrieve their treasure before I left (cute huh?). Okay so I finally figure out where it is with a metal detector and dig it up. Plastic is supposed to be forever right?
No plastic bottle only coins and the lid with a little of the bottle inside the cap.

Waste is relative. Al Gore uses a helluva lot more resources than I do. Is that waste?

I think you are right. Recycling in most urban or outlying urban areas (where the larger population centers are) is mandatory I believe.
Hell, we Amurricans even cost energy waste down by not typing out full sentences on the internet...amirite?
