Title: Damaged meters in cockpits
Post by: Staga on July 20, 2001, 12:07:00 PM
First: Pic (http://www.kolumbus.fi/staga/Pics/damaged109cockpit.jpg) from damaged cockpit from Jane's WW2 Fighters.

It would be nice to see damage like this in AH. Could be fun to search your field without radio, compass and without plane-marker in inflight map or completely without map.
We have working sun and stars in night so we don't need a map to navigate   ;)

I agree, I would like to see the damage model enhanced so that part or all of the avionics is destroyed.

I'm not so sure I like the way Janes represents this. A shattered instrument panel just doesn't make sense. What exactly would shatter all the glass on each instrument dial? Would decompression do that?

If .50 cal bullets hit the cockpit - would it only shatter the glass - and on every instrument or just a few?

I can see a bullet taking out the gyro in the artificial horizon indicator, or when the wing is shot off the IAS reads wrong because the pitot tube is gone (assuming the pitot tube is on the wing tip for that A/C).

Let's not stop there, how about damage which takes out the radio! No text or RW comms.

Yeah, I gather this was pretty common in RL. Also, allow the "you are here" map to be disabled.  The few times this happened it might be fun to try to navigate back to base by the seat of yer pants.

I like it...think they'd all make for interesting additions.  All except the radio part.

And that pic reminds me from another subject (which has already beaten down by htc, but just for "fun"):

While we R at it lets take out the RTB option when U R shot down, we could have U walk or run all the way back to your base or when U get captured U could try your hand at resisting torture and escape and evasion tactics. Maybe if U die when U get shot down U have to sit through a lengthy process of waiting for the war department to find your body and give U a proper burial, one whereU get a 15gun salute and a pretty flag folded over your casket and handed to your next of kin...... hmmmm maybe this could be modeled.

Does Jane's WWII fighters use a 3d cockpit?

I'm kinda curious as to how easy it would be to change the appearance of the cockpit to accomodate a damage indication.  It seems it might be.

If its not that difficult to impliment... I'd much rather see a toggle that allowed a metric version of the cockpit before a cockpit damage model.

It just occured to me that where the IAS was related, the conversion to Metric would be simple.. but where the altimeter is concerned.. things get very sticky.

Guess its not just as simple as changing the numbering on the 3d drawing.

Pisser.

Most shot up cockpit graphics in games way, way over do it.

Most of them have the panel so shot up that there is no believable way that the pilot would have survived the event.

However, haveing things like the pitot and radio damaged sounds good.

Blood splatter on the gauges.
