Title: defensive armour P-47
Post by: XAKL on August 11, 2008, 05:08:34 PM
Is it just me, but P-47 gets blown up too easily??  How is it that Ta-152 takes alot more beating than P-47?  Can anyone change this??

Just you. ;)

Flying both from time to time I don't have the feeling at all that 152 can take more damage, even if you take the radiator out of the equation.

WAATTZZZZZ up dtango!!

Good to see you're still around.  I got back playing off and on since January after 2 or 3 yrs hiatus.  I'm still kinda off and on; my computer really sux.  I'm usually on AvA or the Orange theater.  You'll find me flying the P-40E, P-47, or P-38.  I'm really getting into P-47N.  What's up with you and the good ole' 412th.

the problem occurs when we realise that most of the regular players of AH2 have far better aim than their real life counter parts. If you get sprayed at wildly the jug will just soak up the lead with no damage, if you meet someone who can shoot reasonable well, youre going to be hit by a wall of lead or exploding cannon shells and be shot down very quickly. Its all about convergence, steady aim and concentration of fire....in this case (blown up) presumably a concentration of fire into your pilot's head.

I'd say it is a strong plane with some weak points. It seems to catch fire abit more than say, a P-51D and P&W radials don't seem harder to stop than any other kind of engine, which is contrary to their reputation. Otherwise, it is pretty tough.

I have read that the jug had a Titanium mainspar
in the wing, and lower keel also of Ti...
first plane to use that... tuf stuff!!!

P-47 was made of an aluminum alloy, just like every other WWII fighter barring those with wood in them.

I fly the Jug a lot. Sometimes they seem frail and other times I wonder how the heck it's still flying. In all honesty I feel that the strength of the plane is pretty accurately modeled in dogfight scenarios. Two things that happen far to often in the plane IMO...

PWs from bombers.
And before you guys get all huffy, I realise that PWs are common when riding straight up a bombers low six. What I'm talking about is high speed dives where there gunners would have to shoot through my seat or that R2800 hanging on the front in order to hit the guy inside.

Catches fire far to often for a plane with self sealing tanks.
Most fires in the the jug seem to be a result of puffy or field ack which can get really annoying when fighting in the area of a CV.

The consistant hits that take out the same thing aren't nearly as bad as the likes of the P-40 where, if a tracer passes within a mile of the aircraft, a flap falls off.

Good to see ya back!  412th is still hanging around :).  Skatsr and company have been tearing up the skies in the Mustangs still.  We're back in FSO's so if you're looking for a slot on Friday evenings give us a holler.  I've been busier than heck the past 1/2 year or so.  I've literally flown once in the last month and not too often before that either due to family, work, and life in general!

Another one of the reasons I love my jug, durability. I've had countless times when I'm tryin to force something like an LA7 to overshoot, and they get a crossing shot, just before they overshoot, and my jug will just keep on truckin with 20 mils plastered all over her. I think she's the toughest of the bunch, and has gotten me home 20 mil rakes all over her. :aok

the jugs do seem to be pretty duriable, compared to what you hear from Dogfights or something on the History channel.
