Just a quick question.  Why are badminton and tabble tennis even Olympic sports?  I can understand swimming, track and field and even gymnastics.  The original Oympics were sports based upon warfare and who was the best.  Guess I am just someone that prefers things as they were designed.

IOC approves these 'sports', and yet this is the last year baseball/softball will be played.   Badminton in the olympics, lolz.  It's a backyard sport... although ping pong doubles is just plain silly.

I hadn't heard that the IOC was getting rid of basketball, I can't understand why they would do this, it's a legitimate summer sport.  The only reason I can think of as to why the IOC would do this is because the U.S always dominates the sport ever since they started letting NBA players play on their home countries team.

Ahh, indeed you did, lack of sleep must have made baseball look like basketball.

In that case I can understand getting rid of the baseball part of the Olympics, the best in the world for the men play for pro teams, and minor league teams.  I was watching part of a baseball game yesterday and was thinking about where they got players to play on their countries team.  If they're able to play on the Olympic team, they must not be all that good.

I'm a bit confused by that... So professional players (Yankees, Red Sox, etc...) are not permitted to play in the Olympics? If so, hy are professional basketball players like Kobe Bryant and Yao Ming permitted to play basketball?

Well they probably would let them play, but none are gonna leave their team in August for 2 weeks, plus the training together as a team to play on an Olympic team.

As for baseball, I think only minor league players are able to play.  As for the major leagues, I'm not positive there are rules against them participating, but the season and the olympics overlap.  It may be a common sense management decision not to allow the majors to play.  Ben Sheets (pitcher for Milwaukee) started for the 2000 team.  I guess he was in the minors at the time.

I think we sorta got past the warfare concept when synchronized swimming was put in.

Or synchronized diving. At least synchronized swimming is (I think) women only. I'm no bigoted redneck, but men's synchronized diving is just a little bit creepy. :uhoh

As far as badminton being a backyard recreational sport, so is volleyball, and volleyball is brutal when played at the Olympic level. Remember the first time you saw table tennis played at the extreme level? Like most people, I'd played ping pong, but the first time I saw the Chinese play table tennis, I was like "Holy Crap!". Olympic level badminton is the same way. :salute

Here's a video from the 2004 Olympics

Why is every great ping pong player named "Wang"?

Incidently, I love ping pong. I used to play it during lunch for 12 years when I work night shift.

Badminton is one heck of a sport, and with equal opponents of some skill it's one of the hardest.
Lot's of skill and legwork. Know it, I trained and did some tournaments.
And fun, oh yesss!
