Well my very first job was when I was visiting my mom for the summer in Houston, she worked at a pizza place called Skybox pizza, I made the dough, don't remember what they paid me, it wasn't much, but it was cash at the end of the day.

But my first official job getting a pay check was a bagger for a grocery store called Dominick's making $4.65/hr, minimum wage.

My first job was as a cashier at a large-chain grocery store.  I knew I probably wasn't going to make it long on that one when I accidentally insulted someone.

A very well to do asian looking family comes in.  I check through about 150 dollars worth of groceries.  They pull out a credit card (looking item), and start trying to put it through.  I rung it up as a credit card purchase.  Several times it didn't go through until I took the card and tried to put it through on my end.

I mention that the credit card isn't going through and asked if they had another one.  The wife looked at me and half yelled, "They're food stamps, handsomehunk!"

I never put it together.  They were wearing REALLY nice clothes, shoes, accessories, the works...  It looked exactly like a credit card, and no body had ever explained to me that Food Stamps were not really stamps anymore.

Back then I had a horrendous habit of blurting out stuff before thinking.  I said, "Those things are real?"  The Manager had come over at that point, and sorted it all out.  But she was a coward and didn't fire me on the spot.  After a weak of about half my usual hours at the ABSOLUTE worst times, I took the hint and left on my own.

First job was a summer job. Pumped gas and sold boating stuff at a marina. Met my first real girlfriend there too doing that job actually. She was a little hottie that ran out of gas more and more often. About a month after my boss figured out why she ran out all the time it sunk in with me too. There was yet another first later that summer  ;)

For me, I was a cashier.. at Wal-mart... quiet you...  :devil

actually i bought my first pick-up with a paper route and was very proud of it then too. that required a lot of paper slinging to pay for the truck/title transfer/minor repairs to make street legal so my father could drive it since I was too young at the time.

aside from that though my first job was working on a farm when I was 15 right after I gave up the paper route. That is where I learned that hard work can pay off as long as the boss is willing to pay you and not make you go begging for the money.

by the way thanks for reminding me about how dumb I was in my younger days, well maybe I haven't learned much since then either.

lets see...

...it was a long time ago, in a land far, far away...

We all dressed alike, followed each other around. Not long after we were all down with that, we got to meet exiting, new and unusual people, and spent a lotta time trying to arrange things so they couldn't kill us. Despite the crummy work conditions, we found out that getting terminated wasn't a desirable way to leave the workforce, despite the immediate advantages we speculated about every once in awhile.

Eventually, if you avoided the hostile RIF's (and had enough positive karma) you were transfered back to the world and were deemed worthy of taking your place in line for a job on a hot dog truck.

Scoop Shovel "Operator" on the Farm at age 14.

Spreading grain out level in the back of Bobtrucks as it came off the grain carts and putting the tarps on so they could go to the grainery. BIG fun and got to eat many pounds of dust for min wage. Main reason wasn't the money though but during harvest season farm workers got out of school early.   :aok

Next year picked up though - the owner of the farm took a liking to me because I was a hard worker and took me out in the middle of a field and taught me to drive both a standard shift bobtruck and a tractor. That next year I spent doing nothing but driving - was driving a standard shift bobtruck to the grainery 15 miles away from the farm before I ever even learned to drive a regular automatic shift car.

Was a good few years for a Kid - all should be made to do a few harvests on the farm to see what REAL work is like.

Some good stories. My first job, well actually I had two first jobs Both started more or less simultaneously. Aged 14, pallet repairer and lounge boy. Yes, I just had to be different. My Mother arranged both for me whether I liked it or not.

The first was at a food distributor. They had a lot of pallets in the yard that were a bit damaged and they figured that a couple of boys with a hammer and nails could fix em up. My parents knew the manager and I got the job along with some other kid. We fixed up few but realised it was tough work and soon started pulling out good pallets from the pile and claiming them as repaired. We had other little tasks, one was sitting beside a noisy vibrating machine that washed dried fruit like raisins, picking out stalks and cigarette butts thrown in by inconsiderate Greek farmers. :O There was an interesting diversion. The manager would pick me up every morning but one day he said he couldn't. So I walked. Just outside the building, there he was sitting in his car. I had seen enough cop shows by then to recognise a stake out  Turned out some staff were going in early and stealing stuff. They were caught.  :rofl

Lounge boy, sounds a bit sleazy but really it was just a junior bar waiter. I did that in the evenings in a local pub. There was a bar and a lounge as there often is in Irish pubs. At the time women were not allowed in the bar, just men. They went to the lounge. I swiftly discovered an interesting fact. Men tip better when women are around. Tips were lousy in the bar. In the lounge, you always got big tips. Men showing off, I suppose.

I hated both jobs, I must say and neither lasted long.  But unfortunately they were just a taste of the series of rubbish jobs constituted my 'career'.

Keyfood at 16.  Was working the register one day tripping on acid.   Beautiful summer day, and hotties are everywhere.... well almost.....

Next on line,  a mexican woman, about 35 y.o. 5' 3" close to 200lbs.   wearing a tube top and short shorts, and daintily holding a little bag of lettuce, and grapes.  I turned red trying to hold it back, but i couldn't and burst out lauging. In between fits, i said lady, you've got to be freakin kidding me.    :lol

Manager took me off the register, and told me to go stock the shelves.   So there i am watching all these cute chicks walk up and down the isle, looking at me with my stupid keyfood apron, and my cool aid smile.  A few smiled at me, but i couldn't tell if they were being friendly or mocking me in my ridiculously gay looking apron.  I'm the king of metal man   :rock, i can't be seen like this. Time to go.... I walked up to the manager, gave him my apron, and the tag gun thing, told him i quit, and walked out the door.

My last check was for .24 cents.  :D

I was a line boy at an FBO during last two years in high school.

Fuel airplanes, polish, sweep the hanger, ...

One year during an especially hard fire season, I was filling up DC 4's and 6's as these were the predominant fire retardant droppers for SIS-Q (the company name) there was even a boxcar with a little turbine mounted on top between the radials, apparently running on avgas.

I was driving between the fuel tank and the bombers all day long, the bomber crews telling me to put 150 gallons in each tip, 200 in each root tank, 15 gallons of oil in the #3 engine, stuff like that, when a small taildragger (but with four engines) landed and put in his order.

Our usual faire were Cessnas and Pipers but I quickly got use to selling 400 gallons at a pop rather than the 100 gallons on some bizjet, or 25 gallons to a student on his cross country in a rented C-150.

I had a friendly competition with Charlie, the other line boy, at the same FBO as to who could deliver the most gas, so when this little a/c came in and asked for 75 gallons in each root and top off the tips, I was a little envious of my competition delivering twice the fuel to a 4 or a 6.

When I finished, and was reeling in the hose to the truck, I looked back at this little puddle jumper and realized I had just walked on the wing of a B-17.

I was disappointed with myself that I had been so caught up in the fuel delivery that I didn't appreciate the old warhorse while I was fueling her and I may have lost the gallonage competition that day but Charlie didn't fuel a legend.

I mowed the lawn of the local flight academy as well as being their janitor in office AND hanger, repacking bearings with grease for the landing gear, washing the planes, and even started stripping the paint from this one plane before I was let go.

I earning 5.50 an hour and that was in 2006. I would get 100 for washing a plane though. Got laid off when they decided to contract a company to do the cleaning.

I had mixed feelings about attending Jewelry conventions because that's when I had to work 15+ hours for 5 days.... and get paid $200 a day (pain comes, relief and pleasure later)

I got my first job when I was in kindergarten.  I sold programs at the local minor league baseball park (Anchorage Glacier Pilots).  They always gave me the worst gate because I was a little punk, but I made sure that everyone who walked through the gate knew that I was selling programs.  “PROGRAMS!  GET YOUR PROGRAMS!”  Looking back, I’m most amazed that I made change at such an early age.

Later on I mowed lawns.

Even later I worked at the Anchorage Hilton barbershop shining shoes.  My rent was that I had to sweep up the barbershop.  I was the worst shoe shine boy ever.  No one ever taught me how to shine shoes and I really sucked at it.  I didn’t know it and made money anyway.

In junior high I was a janitor and vacuumed, mopped, shampooed carpets, cleaned bathrooms, etc.  It was also at night (in the summers).  I hated it, but I made money.

Between 11th at 12 grades I started a business selling fireworks in Anchor Point Alaska.  My brother and his wife started doing the same elsewhere the next year.  We became partners after that.  By the time I left Alaska, we were spending over $100,000 a year on advertising.  I made a good living and it put me and most of my friends who worked for us through college, but I never really got rich.

Believe it or not, my first job was as a shoeshine boy at a ritzy country club in northern Illinois.  $3.35/hour...

I also worked later in a pet store, and at a Boy Scout camp for seven summers (was only going to be for 3, but then I met a hot chick (my future wife) who was living locally and babysitting for the Camp Director's kids...).  I worked there as an archery/shooting sports director, lived in a tipi for a season there as the Living History Director,  and spent four years directing the high-ropes "adventure" course 30-40 feet up in the trees...

I started working at a beeper company in Hartford, Connecticut in 1990. Started with inventory and moved on to repair (changing displays, crystals, etc) and I was self taught.

If I didn't get laid off from that job, my life would of turned out much different as I would of never changed fields.

Let's see.........started "helping out" (working) on my dad's farm when I was 10.......soon as I was big enough to handle a tractor.
Did that til I turned 17 and got offered a job at a farm equipment dealership in the town where I went to school.
Farm hand:  Six days a week (Monday-Saturday, 6AM til dark, so usually 8 or 9PM).....salary was $20/week   :huh
Farm equipment store was Monday-Friday, minimum wage......my weekly paychecks were about what I was making for 6 or 7 weeks working for my dad.

Haven't made a habit of working for family since then........lol!   :P

First job was a local radio shack.

Didnt like to too much, too boring and the other employees had about as much sense as a shrubbery.

Oneday someone came in and I asked if they needed any help with anything. After I found what they wanted and left, I was told to "not do that anymore". The reason? Because it takes years of training to do what I just did.

No wonder radio shack sucks now, they got rid of the good stuff and replaced it with cell phones, pizza dish tv, and other worthless garbage sold by robots

Started out on the groundscrew on a golf course in Minnesota.  5am til 3pm but hey, free golf meant I played two rounds in the afternoon.  Sure miss that job.  Was great being outside all day long.

Spent summers from 14 on through college helping install conveyor systems, pallet rack and such for my father who is material handling installation contractor. Had my hand go through a pulley that year while cleaning the grease off of a cable driving a roller conveyor system with a rag and solvent.

The knuckle on my middle finger on that hand got mauled a bit and has been larger ever since and easily pops when I crack it :) I can also count perhaps dozen or more nice scars from slipped wrenches and sharp edges. But, laid the foundation for being fairly handy with tools.
