Walk Ons are welcome and encouraged, however you must Read the Rules so you
do not delay the efforts of those who have spent a month already planning for this.
-
Dont forget that all walk on A6M pilots have to hit auto level any time an A-20 is in icon range :aok
-
Bounty on Humbles A20 has been increased to 9 sheep from the previous 6 sheep.
-
Is that offer open to allied pilots? :noid :rofl
-
Hmm 9 sheep for snaphook you say? I think we can arrange somthing. ;)

Nice fight low over sea Bearkats <S>

The Ki-61 deserved to be in it. It was there in 1942.

Somebody came awful close, ended up with a PW, busted gear, popped turret, missing elevator & airleon and dinged engine and a few guns whacked....but the half of the plane that was still flying limped back home just fine. Fun time again guys :salute

In real life in this period in Burma (late 1941 to early 1942), the Japanese pushed the allied air forces out of Burma. Then the allies came and took it back starting late 1943 and early 1944. In this first period, the IJAF had Ki-21 Sally bombers (60th, 12th, 98th Sentai), Ki-43 Hayabusa fighters (64th Sentai, etc.), Ki-27 Nate fighters, and some other types of lower performance. The allied forces had P-40B's (AVG 1st, 2nd, and 3rd Sqdn), Hurricane Mk IIa's (RAF 17 and 135 Sqdn and 1 other), and F2A Buffaloes (RAF 67 Sqdn).

...and you guys chose the A6M5? I'm not following the logic.

In this first period, the IJAF had Ki-21 Sally bombers (60th, 12th, 98th Sentai), Ki-43 Hayabusa fighters (64th Sentai, etc.), Ki-27 Nate fighters, and some other types of lower performance. They didn't have Betties, Zeros or Dinahs. Likewise, the allied forces had P-40B's (AVG 1st, 2nd, and 3rd Sqdn), Hurricane Mk IIa's (RAF 17 and 135 Sqdn and 1 other), and F2A Buffaloes (RAF 67 Sqdn). They didn't have P-40E's, F4F's, Spitfires, or Beaufighters.
Perhaps a mix of aircraft that would be more-historically accurate would be P-40B's, Hurricane Mk I's, and F4F-3's (with 4 guns, as a good fit for the F2A, actually -- see America's Hundred Thousand for a comparison of F2A vs. F4F) for the allied forces (with the ratio of P-40's:Hurris:Buffaloes being 1:1:0.333) and Ju 88's (as the best fit for the Ki-21), A6M2's (for Ki-43's), and D3A's (for Ki-27's) for the Japanese forces (with the ratio of A6M2:D3A being 1:1). However, historically, the IJAF forces drastically outnumbered the allied forces, so if these more-realistic aircraft were used (where IJAF fighters are much worse than allied fighters), we'd also need more-realistic side balance with the IJAF probably having, say, 3-5 times as many players as the allied side. DoK, the original designer, picked more-contemporary aircraft and more-even player numbers. We're keeping it that way (1) because changing as described above would be a major change, requiring redesigning the scoring conditions, experimenting with side balance and playability, etc. and (2) because this scenario is already delayed compared to our originally desired schedule. Maybe in the future version, we'll try a more-historically accurate mix of aircraft.

While miffed because of my love for the Ki61, I'm coming from the "constructive" side of things. <<S>> Brooke.

I think it would be interesting to have the truly historical mix of aircraft. One other fear is, though: would people be willing to play the IJAAF side if they were flying predominantly D3A's as their fighters? I have no fear of filling up the allied side. My thought is that we'd have a very hard time filling up the IJAAF side, so if we ever went this way, we'd probably have to open registration, see if we can fill it, and if not, immediately switch to a secondary choice of scenario.
-
I do not like inaccurate planesets in a scenario, it gives many the wrong impression of what really happened.
That said, when recreating an event where experience was a huge factor (Burma early war, Russian front, Battle of France, Africa) allowing that side to have slightly better aircraft is one way to represent this.
I was never a fan of recreating events that reflected the skill level as compared to the opposing side.
-
I like the real planesets, too. But we haven't even been able to keep 1.3:1 numbers IJAAF:allied with the current planeset of Rangoon. (Most of the frames were closer to 1:1.) I think we'd have problems with attendance if the IJAAF had a lot of D3A's -- that's my main concern on this one.

Noone ever approached me of joining the "IJAAF" side, only the "Allied" side. I would have flown a D3A as a fighter for the three frames. Flying P-40's against the IJAAF is "Easymode" for me. I'd rather assume the challenge of getting a single victory in a D3A than 2 or more in an "easier airframe".
My never ending quest in AH is to challenge myself continually.

Yep, no doubt there are folks who would be glad to fly D3A's -- me, too. But when we're talking about staffing a whole side, 90 people worth, that's when we start to have issues with attendance.
