A buddy of the pigs Curlewe asked today about what happened to all the drop tanks that were dropped over Europe and the Pacific Isles. And it hit me, What did happen to all those things? Did they cause any injuries, maybe one landed on a house or something. If anyone could answer this that would be nice :)

I'd worry less about DT's and more about all the rounds, air to air and surface to air that have been sprayed around. For example, look at your hit percentage. Where do you think that other ~85% of rounds went? I'm guessing that more than one poor farmer has lost his plow horse to a stray 30mm round. :uhoh

Probably too young to get a job. :)

The early U.S. drop tanks in WW2 were made of hemp. (Biodegradable, insert your bong joke here)
Later in the war, U.S. drop tanks were fitted with igniters so they actually could be used as fire bombs.

No comment on the axe grinding, but I believe the facts and dates are correct.

Do us all a favor...
Go look for this one... you have a basic idea where it is :aok
Forty five years ago a B-47 was flying with a nuclear weapon off the coast of South Carolina, USA. The location is disputed, some say it was off the coast of Georgia and others say North Carolina. The copilot went back to the weapon to install a pin. The pin was necessary for the release mechanism to work. It wouldn't go in. He radioed back to the base and he was advised to jiggle the release mechanism to align the parts so the pin would fit in. When the copilot did this, the weapon dropped out of the plane into the ocean and was lost.

I did not read the entire thread but i would imagine most every one of them is either at a sandy bottom, part of some tree, lost in the woods or was used until discarded by the people who found them. I also imagine that the effect gravity has on bullets did more damage than the amount of fuel tanks that were ever dropped over populated areas.
I'd also imagine an dogfight was something you took your chances watching.
