My only problem with this movie.
If that kid had been in the camp since the beginnig of the war, just how did he ever know what a P-51 was? With that in mind, he should have never even heard of one.
-
I can't believe this movie slipped under my radar in 2007... I just found out about when I was looking for more info about Ki 43 Hayabusa

If I remember the movie right, he saw a magazine ad from North American..probably brought in
by one of the US POWs. Thus Cadillac of the Skies!

Man, I own Empire of the Sun, I never knew or noticed rather, that James was Christian Bale.
That Ore-Kimi movie looks like its worth owning, thanks for the videos.

I would agree only if the Nimitz had been allowed to attack the Japanese fleet. It was good in its day though.

They've got it backwards. Manfred was 5'6", not 6'5".

He also wasnt killed by Brown never flew a D7 hated Goering loved his wingman (Voss) but seldom flew with him which was odd and he was a terrible pilot. The only reason von R lasted as long as he did were the Dicta Boelcke his aristocracy his shooting ability and the fact that flying was in its infancy. He was courageous I will give him that. He would have been scrubbed in WWII luftwaffe training. About the only thing this movie (von R and Brown) had going for it were the air scenes and most of that inaccurate.

IIRC, they managed to get old magazines.

Re: Empire of the Sun... I used to SWEAR that little kid was a grown woman playing the role of a little boy. Turns out it's actually Christian Bale.
Who knew?!
-
I seem to remember him scrounging a discarded magazine article with a North American ad in it. This movie was hard for me to watch on a number of levels (one being the cruelty the Japanese inflicted on my spouses family) but there were redeeming moments to it (the P51 pilot waving for one).
My heart felt overwhelming joy to see the Zero explode! :D

The Blue Max was a great WWI aviation film - recommend that if you have never seen it. Like Flyboys without Pearl Harbour influence, more true to history and real aeroplanes.

There was an actual P-51 used in that scene. In the movies its name was tugboat but I dont believe that was its name in real life, and, if I remember right it was Brit owned. All the other shots were of models mixed in with the real thing. The B-29 going down was a model.
Yep, that was a Steven Spielberg film. Batmans first. I think he won an A award for it, the kid I mean.
-
The P51 was flown by Ray Hanna, now sadly deceased. He's the pilot waving. A New Zealander and one of the great display pilots. It was my pleasure to see him fly a few times.
That Japanese film about the Kamikazes seems to feature excellent CGI, almost realistic? The best I've seen. There also seems to be some model work and full size replicas. I'd love to see the film for real. It's hard to judge from youtube.
The scene from Von Ricthofen and Brown brought back memories because it was made at the same airfield I learned to fly at. As a kid I actually watched dogfights and saw formations of biplanes flying overhead. In fact it was routine. My best memory was when two came down low and duelled right in front of me near my house. It wasn't part of the film. I think they were just having fun. A fantastic moment, because it was no hold barred and right on the deck. To this day I would love to know who the pilots were. I still trace that moment to the start of my fascination with flying.

Thanks for the correction. Has been a very long time since I watched it. :uhoh

In English it goes by "For those We Love", or at least thats what it says on youtube. So not 100% if this is the same movie.

Absolutely! :aok Before George Pepard chose to embarrass himself with "The A Team", he was actually an actor. Then again, so was Dwight Schultz, but I ramble...
