Title: Metallica’s Back. (Old farts, country & rap lovers need not click)
Post by: ChickenHawk on August 21, 2008, 08:37:35 PM
First single released today.  It's not up with their early stuff but judging from this single, it just might be their best in a couple decades.

Enjoy.

Did they cut that in their bedroom at 3 am with GarageBand? The mix sucks. The drums sound like a 150 Pulse percussion set you get on Ebay. I've been playing drums for a long time, I can say that with some experience.

I like Metallica but this was sad. I expected more. I'd still buy the album.

:aok

You can thank Lars being Lars and Rick Rubin as the producer for that.

Overall, not bad.  Better then I was expecting.  I sure don't miss the Bob Rock days.

I've got news for you. James Hetfield and Lars Ulrich turn 45 this year, so they're both "old farts".

:lol  Too True.  I'm not far behind.

I'm with you guys on the drums.  Lars just needs to go away.  Every time I hear him speak I see the CampChaos Napster skit in my head and can't help but laugh.

The single sounds a lot like ..... The Unforgiven? Pretty sure that's the name of the song. Anyhow It seems they got the snare down to something approaching a hard rock tone. I recall a while back I heard a cut and it sounded like it was mixed by Boy George. Still needs a nice big 'verb.

I never really got into them enough to actually buy a record but have covered Sandman, fun song.

Until I came across their covers of Breadfan and Remember Tomorrow. Two songs I've always wanted to do but could never get through committee.

God bless 'em. They've been around a while and are still selling records. That's gotta count for something.

Hey  :furious  I just read in between the parenthesis.  I'm 50+, hate country, hate rap, love most everything else.  I have walked out of places who play country music in anything over background level.   I listed to metallica, and a lot of other stuff.  I have xm radio and like the diversity of what is available.  It gets tiring to hear the same ole top 40 classics over and over and over and over and over and over, etc day after day after day after day, etc over the local rock stations.  And almost the same advertisements.

I clicked on the link and I will always  :rock  on.

I like pink floyd, motley crue, kiss, ozzy, yes, jethro tull, head east, kansas, metallica, ac/dc, and a lot of stuff like that.  I'm too tired and old and cant remember any more names tonight, and I have to go get a dose of geritol

Isn't that the same drum pattern from "One" and same rhythm feel on the clean guitar?

<EDIT> my bad... when the "heavy" guitar kicks in for the chorus:

dum........ dum..dum...da.da.da.da...dum. .....dum..dum......

<AHEM Fade to black identical>

thats just sad.

Weak....Absolutely pathetic....

The mix and mastering is awful (possibly sounds this way because of low bitrate streaming audio)..  I can do a better job(and have done better than this) than this on my home studio....

I've been a "fan" of Metallica since the days before Kill "em All...  I bought a bootleg EP of some live stuff with Dave Mustaine that had some songs you fellas have probably never even heard of before..  Since then, I followed them until And Justice For All....  But honestly, I think Metallica died the day Cliff was crushed under their tour buss..  Jason Newsted just didn't have Cliff's charisma, stage presence, and playing style..  When the Black Album came out, I was thoroughly disappointed, and have been disappointed with every release and every attempt at a come back....  I still stick with the notion that they sold out especially when they released Load..  It was better when the only station you heard them on was Z-Rock or some FM stations late night metal show...  Radio seems to ruin almost all bands that make it "big"..

As far as the band goes:
Kirk Hammet has been held back since The Black Album..  St. Anger didn't even contain one frakkin' solo...  Pathetic...  This guy was taught by one of the best guitarists in the world: Joe Satriani...  Now, Kirks' solos sound unoriginal and boring..

Lars Ulrich: Never been a great drummer...  More of a time keeper than anything(which he doesn't do well at that I might add)...  Being a drummer for most of my life, I can pick out mistakes and lack of timing more so than most who don't even play an instrument (no offense)..  Lars' playing is boring at best....  Not to mention he's an incredibly notorious whiner....  Remember Napster??

James Hetfield:  Well, his voice sounds decent on this song...  He's a rhythm guitarist, and does it well...  Hats off to him for the effort...

Robert Trujillo isn't a bad bassist....  He just has nowhere near the stage presence that Cliff had....  There was actually one bassist named Scott Reader that was actually approached before Trujillo for the bassist job when Newsted left...  Scott Reader is VERY similar to Cliff in his playing style..
But, as we all know, Metallica is all about the image now....  Scott Reader isn't...  He pretty much told 'em to go get fracked...

WTG Anodizer,
Good post...

Haven't ya noticed that all the bands these days are a joke...
Under skilled, and over produced...

It's rediculous!!! Instead of a lead guitar, they just use an extra rythm, and "claim"
that he's playing lead... And where the solo belongs, they add an extra chorus. or some lame vocal BS....

Thats why the new bands last about 3 months, then dissappear... Their songs forgotten forever...
When the payola ends at the lame radio station, so does the music, lol...
I mean really, no one is going to remember them 30yrs down the road anyway...

Unlike the GREAT bands, and tunes, which are 30 or 40yo, and still ROCK DA HOUSE!!!!

Metallica, and Megadeth, I think were the last flag bearers for the bands who could REALLY PLAY!!!

But I'm hopeful for the future... Because the industry MUST notice, that the old hardrock bands are going on tour again,
at larger venues, drawing big crowds... That says it all!!!

 :salute RC

PS,  Peace sells, BUT WHO'S BUYIN???  :rock

Right on brotha.... :rock  Thank you....

Now, to add a little:  In this day and age, most people get their music from a song (or single) they hear on the radio....  This song is made specifically for the radio to be radio friendly..  For instance:  anyone remember the Toadies?  They had a song out that was played 10,000 times a day called Possum Kingdom....  The song was absolutely not representative of what they played...  The rest of that album rocked, but that song was lame and repetitive made especially for the commercial market..  Jane's Addiction is another band where all you ever heard was "Jane Says" or "Been caught steeling"..  Both of which are truly not representative of who Jane's Addiction is/was....

About 10 years ago, I was introduced to all kinds of different music while playing in a band or doing session work for other bands..  Since then, I have continually searched for good non-commercial music that blows away ANYTHING that's been played on the radio in the last 10 years or more..  I listen to bands like Kyuss, Unida, Fu Manchu, Nebula, Sleep, Highonfire....  I also listen to a lot of the heavier Indie rock as well as some punk and underground hiphop (not the retarded gangster thug rap that is the stuff everyone thinks rap is)..

Many people have no idea that there's an "underground" scene that is just as popular with people as the BS they play on the radio....
A good majority of the music has even better mastering and production than the crap you hear everyday in your car on the way to and from work..  Man, if I could make a compilation CD to give you dudes in here, I would..  But that'd be a lot of CDs...  I dunno...  Maybe I'll make a little online radio station for you guys to tune into or something..

All I'm saying is that if your sick or the corporate garbage music you hear day in and day out, there are alternatives...
And please don't knock the stuff unless you've actually heard it...

Rip,

"Haven't ya noticed that all the bands these days are a joke...

I remember having the same conversation 25 years ago.

Plus Ca Change....

But I had to go back and hear it all the way through. Anodizer's right. Poor mix, sounds like the mix engineer's a drummer who doesn't get the concept of panning, and way too loud. That's real common these days. It's all about standing out over the radio.

I did kinda smile at the early Iron Maiden influence.

You speak the truth.  I still keep my alternative roots but i like stuff now that a never hear on the radio.  It mainly comes from the drummer in my band.  Right im into this modern Progressive stuff.  Love Mars Volta,  Coheed is Awesome also.  Dream Theater is Epic awesomeness and probably the most Talented Band Ever assembled.  The Gay thing is that i need a new Ipod.  2Gig aint cutting it.

im convinced if you say anything else you need to go live in a dark corner for the rest of you life.

As for their last album.  Just listen to In Presence of Enemies Part 1 and 2 back to back.  You might have to kill yourself cause you will never hear anything that awesome again.  Im definately going to see them next time they come to town.  I must Worship my God (Petrucci), Jesus (Portney), and the Holy Spirit (Ruess, Spelling?).

That song sucked.  I feel sick for listening to it. :furious

Everyone is right the last good album they put out was And Justice for all.

I hate there new bassiest.  I am a big Primus Fan and remember reading an interview where Les Claypool tried out for the band after Cliff died, and after Les's try out they said "thanks but your to good".  I am not sayinig Les would be a good fit for the band, but that band needs a decent Bass player.

As for the only talent bands out there now, I will give it to Dream Theater, and Tool.  Only two bands I can listen to over and over again, and find something new each time I listen to them. :rock

Sounded far better than some of the stuff they've put out in recent years as well.

The Day that never Comes is good, but nothing beats the CD "One", (and the song...)
(Down with country and techno!!!) Up with everything else except classical, jazz, and blues!!! (blues/jazz/ country rock is fine)
