Title: To the guys always asking for "X" US plane to be upgraded next...
Post by: Karnak on August 23, 2008, 12:25:54 PM
Yes, most of us are Americans here.  Many US aircraft were great in reality and are great fun in AH, some are on my favorites list, the P-38G and F4U-1A in my case.  Despite that, WWII was a huge, multi-national war and many other nations also provided many great aircraft that are also great fun.  In that light, I am going to post a list of units in the game and the percentages that are AH2 standard.  For the B-24J and Ki-84-Ia I will count them as half upgraded as they were first goes and in many ways it really shows, the Ki-84's interior cockpit framing looks worse than many AH1 standard models for example.  The T-34/76 looks a lot better so will count as fully AH2 standard.  I am not going to list individual marks of an airframe as doing one makes it mostly done for the other versions:

United States:

A-20
B-17 (AH2)
B-24 (half AH2)
B-25s (AH2)
B-26
C-47
F4Fs
F4Us (AH2)
F6F (AH2)
Jeep (AH2)
LVTs
M-3
M4 Sherman (AH2)
M-8
M-16
P-38s (AH2)
P-39s (AH2)
P-40s
P-47s (AH2)
P-51s (AH2)
PT-Boat
SBD
TBM

Percentage of distinct units upgraded: 46%

Germany:

Ar234
Bf109s (AH2)
Bf110s
Fw190s (AH2)
Ju87
Ju88
Me163
Me262 (AH2)
Ostwind (AH2)
Panzer IV H
SdKfz (AH2)
Tiger
Whirbelwind (AH2)

Percentage of distinct units upgraded: 46%

United Kingdom:

Boston
Hurricanes
Lancaster
Mosquito
Spitfires (AH2)
Typhoon
Tempest

Percentage of distinct units upgraded: 14%

Russia:

Il-2
Las (Ah2)
T-34s (AH2)
Yaks

Percentage of distinct units upgraded: 50%

Japan:

A6Ms
B5N
D3A
Ki-61
Ki-67
Ki-84 (half AH2)
N1K2 (AH2)

Percentage of distinct units upgraded: 21%

Italy:

C.20s

Percentage of distinct units upgraded: 0%

Comments:

Germany and the US are both looking good and coming along.  Russia's percentage looks good because the Russian set is so disproportionately small that having two AH2 standard lines gives it 50% upgraded status.  Japan, the UK and Italy all are lagging behind the US and Germany.

I would think they should just go with the most used aircraft in the arenas first.  That would make the most people the happiest the soonest.

I have no problem with that method.  It is one reason I was happy to see the La-7 get upgraded and now the N1K2-J even though I am not personally fond of either aircraft.

Karnak,

Be careful or USRANGER will start posting that ONLY the US planes should be upgraded because they are the only ones that matter, since anything/everyone outside the US is inferior and stinks !!

Well, only an idiot believes in such a simple, black and white world.  I don't worry much about the opinion of idiots.

It's always stunning to see visually how fewer planes the Russian planeset has than the other national planesets. Especially considering how large of a role the Russian planes (earlier Yaks, MiG-3's, etc) had during the war.

Does HTC think these planes will be hanger queens? I think they underestimate the interest our playerbase has in Russian planes. Look at the success that the early IL-2 games in the series have had. I know to me personally there is no more compelling matchup than 109's or 190's against anything Russian. Feels far more authentic to me than any overplayed Western ETO matchup.

Sorry for going slightly off topic [/hijack off]

We do need more Russian aircraft, but the MiG-3 is not high on the list.  I don't know why people focus on it so much.  It was a low production, unsuccessful aircraft that did not play a large role.  I'll not cry about it if it is added, but I don't see why it gets so much attention.

It's hot. The definition of what a Russian aircraft should look like.

I'd rather see new aircraft before time is spent updating the looks of the old ones.

Why?  It is the only Russian aircraft that looks at all like a MiG-3.  Why is it what they should look like?  It hardly saw use compared to things like the I-16, Yaks or La-5/7s.

I should have said... according to most people I've talked to, the MiG3 is the most aesthetically pleasing fighter of the Soviet set.
When I think of a generic Soviet fighter aircraft, I think of the MiG3, despite its relatively small production numbers... it just 'looks Russian' IMO.

I think the M4 Sherman we have should go under Britan. As the Firefly was a british tank.

Wasnt the mig and lagg's stopgap production models between the early I-16's and later yak & la-'s?

Basicly, they sucked, but were better than the il-16 in many respect, but nothing compared to 44-45 aircraft.

Not really... The I16, Yakovlev 1, the MiG3, and the LaGG3 were all in service at the time of Barbarossa... the Yakovlev 1 and LaGG 3 both continued to be developed (the Yakovlev into the 7, 9 and eventually the 3, and the LaGG of course into the La5 & 7), so I wouldn't really call them 'stopgap' models.

Ever think that maybe reliable USSR plane data may be difficult to find?
Would be problematical to add new birds without good data.

T34/76 got updated?
T-34/76 was one of the first three units to be added at AH2 standards.  The other two were the Ki-84 and B-24J.  The T-34/76 looks good, but the Ki-84 and B-24J both have issues that need to be fixed before they are really full AH2 looks.

Yossarian,

No, you don't.  You are confusing need for want.  And it will be a perk plane anyways.

And where the hell did that come from?  Do I even know you?  I think not. We could meet in the DA to discuss it anytime if you wish.

Fine, you're right.  But I still really, really want it.

And at anyone who's calling USRanger an idiot, you should look at the "Offline Missions" section of the BBS before you do so.  You have to scroll down a bit to find it.  Perhaps after that you're rethink your judgement.

It's a kind of myth:

1) "It was a low production" - actually it was not  - 3,172 were built
2) "unsuccessful aircraft" - It was 1941 - the most unsuccessfull year for VVS. Still, some soviet pilots were successfull in some aircrafts. For example Pokryshkin was successfull flying MiG-3 in 1941.
3) "did not play a large role" - in 1941 MiG-3 played much more important role compared to Yak-1 or LaGG-3 (was delivered in greater numbers).

Here is a nice video of restored MiG-3 flying on the MAKS 2007 airshow

There's plenty of reliable sources... or else there would be no IL-2 simulator series.

You think so?  in his post he says he doesnt know me right? well he sends me a PM calling me a "maskin retard".  What would you call a person that immedately throws racial insults over something as silly as this?  BTW, I am not the guy who called him an idiot, but I would be hard press to argue against that label.  Dont believe me, see his actual PM below....

In 1941 Aircraft factory #292 produced 1,212 Yak-1.
