Title: Camera Shots / High Quality
Post by: Chalenge on August 23, 2008, 04:50:37 PM
Can some of you experts reveal how to set up the camera angles. I tried a search... cant find a help file. And how do you 'render' this stuff in high quality? Please tell me you dont have to do a frame-by-frame export and then piece it back together? Is there a program outside of FRAPs that you use? New to this so any help would be a big help.

You can use all the normal keyboard commands (F3, Z, [,], etc.) in the film viewer to set up your shots. At that point, just hit 'PrtScrn' on your keyboard (to the right of F12), go to MS Paint, GIMP, Photoshop/Paintshop, etc. and hit ctrl+v. You can edit them from there as you see fit.

Found this old "help" file from my documents.

AH FILM SHOTS - Brief tutorial

1. Open an AH film with the AH Film Viewer. Find an area of the film to your liking to make a film shot. Pause the film when you find an area you like.
2. Now click on the SET UP CAMERA SHOTS button. This will bring up a new window entitled FILM SHOTS.
3. Press the NEW SHOT button in the FILM SHOTS window. You'll see "SHOT 0" in the top pull down bar of the FILM SHOTS window.
4. Choose a camera shot. For this tutorial we'll use a plane relative shot. Next to SHOT TYPE, select "PLANE RELATIVE".
5. Now back in the Main film viewer, Press F1. This will put you in the cockpit. Now lets move the eye point outside the cockpit. -Press the right arrow key until you are over the right wing of you aircraft. -Now, press F8 and then 4 to rotate your eye point 90 degrees to where you are looking at the fuselage. -Press the Down arrow key until the entire plane fills the screen.
6. Once the first eye point is to you liking, Press the GRAB ALL button in the STARTING CAMERA area of the FLIM SHOTS window.
7. Play the film now. Your eye point should follow the plane.
8. Now press "PAUSE" on the Main Film viewer after several seconds have played. Now we will set up our ending camera position. -Press the right arrow until the plane is 1/2 way off the screen in the main film view window. -Now press F8 and then press 4 until the plane is re-centered in the window. You should be looking at the plane now from an angle. -In the FILM SHOTS window press the GRAB ALL button under the ENDING CAMERA area.
9. Now Press "PLAY SHOT" and you should see your newly created shot.
From here, you can save and name the shot, as well as export the shot to AVI. That’s it! You've created a film shot! There are endless ways to set up shots with the film shot window using various TARGET PLANES and CAMERA SHOTS. The GRAB TARGET button will allow you film from the eye point of another player. To do this in you main film viewer - just double click on a players name in the list to the right of the main window. Now, in your FILM SHOTS window, you should see that player’s name in the TARGET PLANE Box. Press GRAB TARGET. Now you can set up different camera shots from that player’s viewpoint. Also, you'll notice that the eye point movement will speed up the longer you hold it down one of the arrow keys. This comes in handy when you want to start or end a shot far away from you target plane. MISC:
Starting Camera
GRAB ALL
Grabs all information about the current eye point / camera.
GRAB START TIME
Grabs the current time position in the film viewer.
GRAB FOV (Field of View)

If it's not too much trouble, can you put something up on the forums (even if it's a link to download a pdf or something)?  I would like to get my feet wet with films, and I'm sure there are others in the community who would benefit from such information.

Okay, I'd be glad to. You'll have to give me until the weekend to dig it all up though, but I'll definately do it. :aok

No problem...I have to have time to start filming stuff anyway as I always forget to roll film until after a good fight or some other interesting event. DOH!

Since we all contribute our time and efforts for free, I certainly am not one to pester someone to produce results immediately.  :)

I have a AH tutorial video on how to use the camera shots system.  I can't remember who made it (without watching it).  Only downside is it's a SWF file (Flash) so you'll need a flash player to watch it.  It does a good job.

Unfortunately I'm in the process of fixing the download section on the AHMD.  I'll let you guys know when it's up.

Thank you Fulmar, I've been waiting for your site to come up since it went down.  I enjoy going and looking at all of the movies.

BTW I know this is really noobish, but what is FRAPS and how is it used?

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fraps
"Fraps (derived from Frames per second) is a benchmarking, screen capture, and real-time video capture utility for DirectX and OpenGL applications. It is commonly used to determine a computer's performance with a game, as well as record gaming footage. The program is very popular in the making of amateur machinima films. "

And here's the old (working) download link to the AH Camera Shots tutorial.  It's large at 250+mb.  Runs about 10 minutes

I've played around with the film viewer for about a year, and I am no expert... It's a different beast evertime I open it up.

As for screen shots:

Open your Film Viewer. Open a file you may want to use for a possible screen shot.  Play the film until you have what you think will be a good screen shot scene. Then Move the Camera Views around and Play with the Views until you have a good looking screenie of what you want. Click on the Full Screen button. If it looks good, press Ctrl + Prnt Scrn... Minimize the Film Viewer.  Then Open up Windows Paint, or similar program Paste the screen shot... Then save it. You can then open the picture later to edit in Photoshop, or Gimp, or whatever you like... Or just post it as is.

Note: I play with all my Graphics down low to increase my frame rates. I have to Open my ATI (Video Card) Controller Program to do this. BUT, When I go to make a screen shot. I open the ATI Controller, and Turn everything up to MAX. When you open your film viewer, the graphics will be nice and clean, to make your Screen shot look much better... So be sure to turn your graphics up before opening your Film Viewer. And turn them back down for game play, as you see fit.

Hope this helps.

Do a search for programs... Type in your Nvidia model? I'm not too sure, but I had to dig around to find mine.

Title: Re: Camera Shots / High Quality

Also, how do I get the text and voice along with the icon that comes from voice out of the shot?
Title: Re: Camera Shots / High Quality
Post by: Fulmar on August 30, 2008, 03:02:27 PM
Text won't show up in capturing the video/film.  Voice will though.  You can download fraps and try it out.  The demo version allows you to record 30 seconds of video (after 30 sec the video goes to b/w), also it watermarks your video.  Full version is like $30-40.

To get the voice out, it's best to make a copy of the film you're going to remove the voice from (just in case you want to keep the voice for a later time, you'll have a backup unedited original).  In the film viewer, at the top right corner.  Enter in the time of the where you want voice removed.  You enter this in the white box to the right of "Start Select".  Example: 00:00.  Then enter the end spot in the white box below.  Example 00:20.  Then hit the Edit Text/Voice button.  Check mark either remove text and/or remove voice.  Once you hit okay, it permanently removes text and/or voice from the film (this is why I said make a copy of the film beford editing it).

Ok, I need some help with these camera shots.

1.  How do you get a fixed view of say a plane coming straight at you and then follow it after it passes?

2.  I'm also having trouble with zooming into the plane or away from it during the shot.

3.  What is the purpose of World Pointing and World Relative?

Thanks for all of your help so far everybody, hopefully I can get this thing going and I will most certainly give a few shout outs at the end for those of you who have helped.

Ok, I need some help with these camera shots.

1.  How do you get a fixed view of say a plane coming straight at you and then follow it after it passes?
Run film to a point about halfway into your "shot time"; then pause it.  Use your arrow keys to move your camera a little to the side and a little up or down.  Create a new shot and select "world pointing" and target the plane you want to have "flyby".  Capture the start and end positions (so they are exactly the same). Don't bother with the pitch/yaw stuff.  Set the start time 5 seconds or so back, and the duration to 10 seconds or so.  When you play your shot, you should have a nice flyby scene.

2.  I'm also having trouble with zooming into the plane or away from it during the shot.
Zooming is done with the field of view.  I usually set mine anywhere from 25-70 depending on the effect I'm trying to achieve.  Different values for the start and end will give you the zoom in/out.

3.  What is the purpose of World Pointing and World Relative?
World Pointing sets your position relative to the world coordinates and keeps you pointed at a target object.
World Relative is the same thing, but allows you to stay pointed in the same direction.

Thanks for all of your help so far everybody, hopefully I can get this thing going and I will most certainly give a few shout outs at the end for those of you who have helped.

I'm doing this from memory, so I might be off a little.  I just learned this stuff earlier this week while on vacation.   :D

Also, how can I get a view on the ground at say a Vehicle Hangar, and stay on that hangar or field while it is being dropped?

I think I can use the World Relative for this, but I'm not too sure.
Title: Re: Camera Shots / High Quality
Post by: ImADot on September 07, 2008, 07:54:14 PM
Yup, World Relative.  Crappy thing about the film viewer though...you have to spend a loooong time with the arrow keys to move your point of view away from your plane and down to the ground.  Doing it from 13,000 feet to get down to the ground to watch my bombs hit was a pain.

I wish there was a way to get back to that position if you want to tweak it if your shot doesn't look right.  You either have to start all over, or start messing with the numbers until you figure out how much and in what direction to move.  132456.345 -- not quite where I want...hmmmm maybe I'll try 132550 and see where that puts me.

That's what I thought and it does take a while to get the arrow keys to work.

BTW, I can't believe you're quioting Tatour in your signature.

Sorry, I've been in the process of moving to a new city.  Finding free time is becoming difficult.  But I  have re-copied the movies over, just a matter of sorting and reassigning the movies to the correct folder.  I'll try today if I get a chance.  A weekend project has turned into a month delay...

I know, I remember when he and a few others broke off from the "Guns".  Thanks for the help with the film, it should be done some time this week.

Thanks Fulmar, I enjoyed watching some of them and was going to watch more to get more ideas for camera shots for mine.

Anybody heard the 3 Doors Down song, "It's Not My Time"?  How do you think that would work for the film?

Since I'm normally having to get someone off of my 6 which normally ends with me in the tower, I figured I could use it to show some people not being able to shake anybody.  It would be a little bit of irony for those who went down.
