Title: Looking for Fishing Tips!!
Post by: Yenny on August 24, 2008, 06:54:22 PM
Anyone got any tips for a beginner? I usually fishing fresh water from a small lake or river. Usually I'm aiming for bass and trout. Still working on setting up the line, what bait is best, how to set up the bait, and technique for fishing etc. I've spent about 10 hours fishing on last 2 days but no luck=/.

Largemouth Bass

Overcast, tepid temps - spinnerbait, jitterbug up and down the banks.

Late afternoon - minnows and a bobber.

If you can, get a small boat or something that floats :P. And swim out to middle of the lake, me and my dad did this up in Cape Cod at our uncle's friend house and caught at least 30 fish in less than 15 minutes.

Good luck. :aok

If they sell fireworks in your state, get yourself a gross of M80's or H100's, some duct tape, and pick up a bucket full of heavy rocks or some bricks and a big fishing net..

1.  Secure explosive to rock or brick using duct tape (12 or 14 gauge wire works too)..

2.  Light fuse (the wicks are water proof, so don't worry)....

3.  Throw in water....

4.  Scoop up fish with net and throw back the ones you don't want (carp, suckers, etc.)

5.  Don't get caught  :D

The alternative method uses electricity, but is inherently dangerous..

also in the realm of bass fishing, nothing, but nothing (strictly fishing related) is as exciting as a hit on a top water lure... It will pump you up like crack!

Think of it as hunting underwater. Fish are critters that relate to structure. Structure and seasonal patterns. Bass are especially structure orientated and the most structure orientated are the "trophy" fish.

For bass this time of year look for points of land, large flat weedbeds, piers, boat made channels that are close to deep water. Bass will come up into the weedbeds, especially edges of weedbeds, during calm lowlight hours, at night, or even on cloudy days with wind. Summer winds generally blow S/W which means N/E areas of a lake can be productive as long as they have structure too. Why is that? The wind over a few days will blow the lakes foodchain downwind. Also downwind areas have more chop, which diffuses the water, and limits the light that enters the water. The best days to fish walleye are days so choppy you can hardly sit in the boat.

Run spinners in weeds for active fish. For less active run weighted jigs with plastic worms on weedbed edges and drop offs. Even bottom rigs with big night crawlers are effective on deep drop offs for big summer bass. Generally you want to run bigger rigs in summer because fish are programmed to eat the biggest thing they can while expending the least energy. And theres so much food available this time of year you often have to give them a big target.

On the other hand sometimes a smaller lure will work. And fish are very color concious. Certain colors in certain lakes work best at certain times. What you want to do is find out what they want and then keep throwing the same type of lure/bait out. If a cold front moves thru with big east winds and falling barometer go to a movie instead. What you want for fishing is consistant days of high pressure and stable weather.

Remember tho the hottest time to be on a lake is right before a cold front hits. Fish sense it coming and go on a hot feed. If you do fish a cold front then you have to bounce a jig right in front of them cause they wont be on active feed.

Most of all remember the word "structure" and this time of year "access to structure from nearby deep water". Best are cuts and channels that form a kind of highway for the big fish. The big Bass are there. Believe me they are there. And good luck.

This time of year two baits that work really good for trophy bass are jerk baits like rapalas and artificial crawdads. Color is important and the yellows in late august to october work great. Usually an orange belly to black upper or even all gold. You see a lot of spray on attractors for sale but I will tell you the best attractor is the little red worms that are used for composting:

http://www.redwormcomposting.com/

A little of the scent from one of these worms drives largemouth crazy. Bait a hook with one and it wont be in the water long. Even an empty hook that has the juices from one of these worms on it will drive bass crazy. Fish with them for an hour or so and then use a jerk bait with medium hooks and you will have a full catch.

Hehe reminds me of a joke I heard.

A game warden drives up to the boat launch one day and sees an old man loading his catch into the back of his truck. A bunch of other men are standing around admiring the the fish the man has caught and all of them are commenting on how he was the ony guy on the lake that day to catch any fish.

The game warden asks the old man, "How is it your the only person fishing today that caught anything?"

The old man looks at the warden and smiles and says, "Well that's an old fishermans trick I use and it works every time."

The game warden asks the old man if he could go out with him sometime and see and the old man agrees and tells the warden to meet him at 6AM the next day and he would show the warden how to really catch fish.

The next morning the warden meets the old man and they head out onto the lake. The old man drops the anchor, opens his cooler and grabs something to eat for him and the warden. Then he reaches under the seat and pulls out 2 sticks of dynomite. He lights one and hands it to the game warden, then he lights the other one and tosses it over the side of the boat.

At this point the warden starts yelling at the old man, "Sir you can't throw dynomite into the lake, it's illegal and I'm going to have to place you under arrest, the state is going to take your truck, boat, and all of your fishing gear as evidence, and your probably going to get some prison time as well for having explosives."

The old man looks at the warden, smiles, and points at the stick of dynomite in the wardens hand and says, "You going to sit there and yap all morning or are you going to fish?"

For one, go where the fish are.  Two, use weedless rig and plastic worms for bass, it is good bait year round.  Third, morning and evening are the best times for Bass. :aok
