For the love of God, please at just attempt to use proper spelling, grammar and punctuation when you post. How you write will be one thing that determines how well you do in school and then what kind of job you land when mommy kickes you out into the real world. It's not that hard. Plus we old folk will respect what you post a lot more.

:huh In gaming and forum, I don't think anyone care for grammar. Let's look at first person shooter, world of warcraft, and everquest etc. People tend to have a time restriction with what they gotta do and sending the message across. Therefore, most of the time it just comes to whatever get the message across the fastest. Amirite? I'm pretty sure that most people can write correctly, if there is the need for it. =)

Well, no one under 16 anyhow. I got yelled at enough times in my formative years for ending sentences with prepositions, etc. that it sticks with me to the point of re-writing grocery lists

If you notice that those that usually post with poor spelling and grammer are usually the 'tards in the game, for example Warlockl and are quite different from those that use Intardnet speak to save time when posting.
ack-ack

Teachers and professors have already expressed dismay at the way internet speak seeps into the writing of their students. Can you spell "F41l?" I agree with the original post that spelling, grammar and even style should be retained whenever possible.
-
If I see more then two major mistakes in the first sentence, I don't bother reading the rest. If it's not worth writing properly, it's not worth reading.

This is very true in today's technological age where the written medium is a far more prevalent communication tool than the "face to face" meetings of old. Any opportunity to practice good written communication is going to serve you well in the future. There have been many studies that show conclusively ones ability to communicate effectively is directly linked to personal income and wealth. This may be a game forum, but it's as valid an opportunity to practice effective communication as any other. If you don't practice it all the time, you'll likely not be able to suddenly "switch gears" and use it effectively when you need to.

awrighty, i'll play... by "effective" we can agree that it means - getting your point across?
both you and kweassa are mighty fine constructors, but the WOT's might make many not even bother reading...
why use 27 words when 6 will do?

Every word in his post was valid and necessary to make his point. If it makes you not even bother reading it, maybe it was not directed to you.

That's nice. But forgive employers for not hiring the speakers of this changing dynamic language, ok?

Seriously, zazen's post was written like an engineering project. Every sentence had a job to do, and the paragraph as a whole was parsimonious.

If you hypocrites lived up to your own standard, you guys would be pouncing on Stang for his own obvious mistakes, but alas, you can’t see clearly for the beam in your own eye.
Congrats on the vet-pass Stang; it facilitates the double standard marvelously.

It has been pointed out, but not corrected. It is a waste of time, IMO.

It was pointed out. I don't jump all over people for a few spelling mistakes when I can see they're doing their best.

in abt 5-10 years they're not gonna have much choice... txt msgs are just as guilty of snipping at the language we grew up with as l33tsqu34k.
just bear in mind there are two styles, formal and informal, held to slightly different standards... it's important to fit the style with the context.
<psst.. almost never start a sentence with a conjunction.> :aok

<psst.. almost never start a sentence with a conjunction.> :aok
In some kinds of academic writing that is done routinely (and I don't mean English or Poetry class). ;)

Of course they will. They'll continue to outsource jobs to India, where English is spoken far more eloquently. However, I wouldn't worry too much about it. They'll never be a threat to the skilled communicators working the late night drive-thru at Burger King.

further reinforcing my point of fitting style to context.

LOL.
Tomcatter, you're leaving out the most important part: "a few spelling mistakes." Those who write words with numbers and leave out punctuation are not doing their best.
Don't split my sentences in half if you're going to quote me.

Or people who don't know who a persons name is.

...lf if you're going to quote me.
Seems I can't help myself.
Besides, simmer down, nothing you (or anyone else on here - myself included) have to say is so profound that it can't be split.

Yes, but it's an online community that has a lot of people with variety of ages. I know a lot of us have different background with gaming. Some use different slangs from different games.

This is the first online game I have ever played. I've been playing for about 3 years now and you guys still confuse me with some of this stuff.

I was mainly talking about the ones that didn't. It wouldn't have made much sense for the ones that did, now would it?
Having said that, I will take that hug, I imagine you're cuddly.
-
If he muted people in H2H to get an easy kill, he is far from cuddly. ;)

I agree with how grammatically incorrect people over the internet can be, but I sometimes don't feel the need to sound smart and use words I barely understand, so that I can please people. If I can say a simple sentence, why would I need to put more depth into it when the point is clearly stated.
This however, can only go so far, and when I see people over the internet using horrible grammar, I usually correct them. Once it becomes obvious they're not joking around, then I tell them to go back to school and look at a dictionary, or they can practice the phrase "would you like fries with that?"
I've seen how stupid kids can be. I AM one, and when somebody I know can't spell "golf course" when they've been playing golf for 2 years, I just have to step in.
I could dive deeper into how flawed our education system is, but I dont wanna be a troll.

Nothing to spoil a merge more than a pop up "You have been muted for 10 minutes" in the middle of your screen. :lol
Didn't realise you used to join those rooms.

I'm not sure if you ever did it to me. However I got my possible payback by ruining your fights with Holly. :t

There's definitely times to be as brutally succinct as possible. But, there's times to use what some may consider superfluous descriptors to achieve a more thorough and comprehensive understanding of ideas and concepts. Writing as succinctly as possible is great for an Encyclopedia entry or for a stereo setup manual where the sole purpose is the dissemination of factual data in as contrite a manner as possible. But, for the articulation of concepts, ideas and the enunciation of salient points in a debate, sentences and even paragraphs constructed specifically to support and describe the main idea are crucial for effective written communication.
For example...Here's a very succinct essay on why dogs make good housepets..
Dogs make good housepets because they are intelligent and can both express emotional states and evoke them in humans.
Dogs are considered "man's best friend" because they love unconditionally and are not subject to the vagaries of dramatic moods swings as humans tend to be. It is scientific fact that people with pets, especially dogs, tend to live 8-12 years longer, depending on gender, and their emotional quality of life is better.
In conclusion, dogs make great pets as they provide a deep and unconditional mutual emotional repore often lacking in human interpersonal relationships.
As, you can see that essay is very succinct and I disseminated some good information. But, it was lacking in "soulful" resonance with my reader, lacked concrete relatable examples and was generally not terribly convincing or interesting to read. Writing as succinctly as possible is not necessarily the best way to communicate ideas, arguments or concepts. This is especially true when your goal is to capture the reader's attention, paint a mental picture or persuade others to your point-of-view.
