Watching Red Dawn for first time. Missed first half hour. How the hell did russkies reach continental USA?
BTW was it a TV movie? The acting is a bit suspect.
-
Its oooold, so the acting should be so so, was a great movie when i was a little kid, now i dunno. What i can remember of it, the russkies did a large para drop of troops? took over airfields and flew more troops in? i dont really remember, have to watch it :P
-
Russia and Cuba sent troops up through mexico and also use airliners to drop paratroops and land troops and vehicles. they also came down through alaska and canada.
They nuked some places like NORAD and missile bases in central US.

it was russians and mexicans. i think the rusians did an airdrop of troops.

Many troops came up thru Mexico. And Cuba was allied with the Russians. Acting wasn't the problem with the movie. The movie was the problem with the movie. Pretty stupid. They should of thrown in Pauly Shore and a few Ninjas to make it more believable.
A great US-Russia war would be a film adaptation of "Red Storm Rising", although it won't happen because it falls outside the Clancy/Jack Ryan continuum.

here is how it happened. more detailed.
The film's backstory involves several alternate history political precedents. The Green Party came to power in West Germany, forcing the removal of U.S. forces from that nation and all nuclear weapons from Europe. The resulting upheaval left NATO as a political nonentity, with only Britain remaining as a U.S. ally. At the same time, Soviet allies Cuba and Nicaragua each expanded their armies to 500,000 men, subsequently overrunning El Salvador and Honduras. A civil war in Mexico resulted in that country falling behind the Communist "Iron Curtain." In a parallel to Operation Barbarossa, the Soviet Union, like Nazi Germany, now had a broad base from which to invade its primary enemy, and thousands of troops from satellite nations to augment their own armies.
During this time, the Soviet Union was suffering its worst wheat harvest in 55 years and food riots were occurring throughout the nations of the Warsaw Pact. Apparently desperate for food to feed its people, the Soviet Union and its allies launched a full scale invasion of the United States. Although the movie was released in 1984, the story itself takes place in the near future, starting in 1989 and ending in 1990, because the Holodomor of 1932-1934 is probably[original research?] what is being referred to in the opening narration as the previous "worst wheat harvest" that happened 55 years beforehand.
The Soviets utilize a three-phase attack. First, they use strategic nuclear strikes to destroy key points of communication including several major U.S. cities (Omaha, Kansas City and Washington, D.C. are specifically cited). Strategic nuclear weapons are also used to destroy ICBM bases in Montana and the Dakotas. In addition, it is hinted that Cuban infiltrators aid in confusing U.S. forces by raiding Strategic Air Command bases throughout the Midwest and Texas. Coupled with these nuclear attacks, Soviet transport aircraft containing elite Soviet VDV and Cuban paratroopers slipped through the U.S. radar disguised as commercial airliners.
The second phase saw Cuban and Nicaraguan armies (with small contingents of Soviet forces) pouring across the U.S.-Mexico border into the Great Plains of the United States. The third phase involved a Soviet invasion of Alaska across the Bering Strait from Siberia. They crossed into Canada occupying the Yukon, British Columbia and Western Alberta, most likely including Calgary[original research?], and cut the Alaskan Pipeline, but were decisively stopped at the U.S.-Canadian border by U.S. forces (thus preventing a link-up with Soviet forces occupying the Great Plains).
Elsewhere, Britain remained loyal to its American allies, but suffered heavily for it. China also declared war upon the Soviet Union, however incurred significant losses, Tanner claiming that there were only "600 million screaming Chinamen". When asked "I thought there were a billion screaming Chinamen?", he cryptically replies "There were" and throws his drink in the fire, causing it to flare and suggesting China had suffered Soviet nuclear strikes. In the film, the effects of the nuclear weapons are not shown because the location (northern Colorado) is far from any targeted sites.
The Communist forces manage to occupy and control a large region of the central United States, extending as far west as the Rocky Mountains, and north to Cheyenne, Wyoming, across Kansas to the Mississippi River in the east. Denver is also under siege. Tanner mentions that conditions in Denver are particularly bad, with people living on "rats, sawdust bread, and, sometimes, each other." He says the remaining holdouts most likely won't survive.
Once the lines are stabilized, it quickly becomes a conventional war with both sides ceasing their use of nuclear weapons. Colonel Tanner explains that the Soviets are reluctant to use any more nuclear weapons, as they want to conquer the United States, not destroy it utterly, and the U.S. government is unwilling to use tactical nuclear weapons on or over their own soil against the invading armies.

EDIT: Nevermind whels pretty much got it.
-
What's funny is that it is building up again.

comparing that to todays movies would be like comparing some of the WWII movies of the 50s to SPR or Flags of our fathers. Different eras.....IE most 80s movies seemed awsome at the time are kinda cheesy now. Alot of young talent in the movie as well. I remember watching it as a kid and being scared by what "could" happen.
Either way I think it was a classic of my generation.
If done right that's one movie I wouldn't mind seeing remade.

Let's just hope it's not redone from a historical perspective.

Ponyboy rulez. :O

This movie also take me back to my active duty time in the navy. They'd show this movie often while we were in the Med. and when it got to the "Avenge me, son! AVENNNNNNNNNNNGE ME!" scene invariably all of the rednecks watching would start sniffling and dabbing their eyes with their hankies. After the movie ended one of them would go back to their rack and start blasting Lee Greenwood's "Proud To Be An American" from some tape player.
It still makes me lawlz when I think about it.

My fiance didn't believe me that the guy & girl from Dirty Dancing ran around killing foreign invaders long before they danced on a log.
I bought the DVD the same day. :aok

I actually saw it in the theater when it came out. When the Hind helo's made their appearance I remember thinking, "Where in the hell did they get THOSE??" I was very surprised.
-
At one time it was considered by Guiness Book of World Records to be the most violent move ever.
-
I remember seeing it in the theater when it was released, a very "gung-ho, lets get'em boys" kind of movie when you're in your 20's
-
They weren't real MI24's... They were actually Sikorsky SeaKings
Modified... I've heard that they were so far out of balance, that they could barely fly...
Thats why they just kind of flutter around, no serious maneuvering, movie pilots
were afraid of crashing them...

I think troops were dropped by C47s.. Not sure though.
Great movie by the way :rock

Yeah, that was pre-Tarantino. :lol
-
Well watched most of it before I had to pick my wife up. My rating? Nowhere near as good as Iron Eagle. The acting didn't improve and the lack of real Russkie armour spoilt it for me. Pretty violent though.
-
I have the film now, i wonder if its even worth pressing play :)
The teacher in the beggining "I would say they are Way Off Course" then he gets blasted by the russian paratroopers.
-
tactically speaking it would have been hard for paratroopers to move ALOT of armor in that far.
-

Most of that armor prolic came from M'texass.
-
hey guys, if u want the tactical side of the storyline, whels has it covered on pg-1, it long but explains it all
-
Its pretty good, i think you have to see the movie from the start to get the feel for it Dowding.

Man, that's really deep, too.

Wow. I know it's a bad movie, but I didn't think it was that bad.
-
Iron Eagle III was the best.

Red Dawn is a great movie!

Even if the eeeevil Rooskies did take Calgary, they could never hold it, not never so long as Ralph Klein lives.
"Ralpherinesssssssssssssssssss ssssssssssssssss!!!!"

Heh, I remember tales of Red Army attacks in WWII grinding to a halt when Ivan came across warehouses of alchy-hol.
Why make Molotov cocktails when you can just toss 'em a bottle of vodka?
-
I am sorry Iron Eagle isn't even close to believable. Shooting the tower (made of iron and wood) with cannon and having it explode in a ball of fire, seeing that I turned it off. :cry :cry waste of time
-
first time i saw this movie was just out of basic training! we got marched over to the theater on the next too last day at Fort Leonard Wood,,, whoop whoop! :aok

No kidding.

Now there's idea. I'd pay good money to see Birmingham getting nuked. :D

I like to spank bald idgits; what can I say.
-
How can you say these things about Iron Eagle?! It is the best 80's film apart from Top Gun, of course. Why hasn't the USAF used the Hades bomb more often? That infinitely wide wall of fire, around which you can't drive since no vehicle carries enough fuel, should have been used more often in combat.
You have to admit that blowing up stuff to Queen's 'One Vision' is pretty cool.
And it is better than Red Dawn. Red Dawn felt like a TV movie and apart from an F-111 and a chipboard Frogfoot, I didn't see any planes.
-

You can get banned for saying things like that here.

Loved Red Dawn, and Iron Eagle when i was growing and yeah kicking around the F-16 simulator with One Vision rocking was probably my then age groups wet dream - but neither have aged well at all

My rating? Nowhere near as good as Iron Eagle.
:huh GOD I HATE THAT MOVIE!
-
Red Dawn kicked Iron Eagle's butt, pee'd on it, then drank it's blood. :D

Brief hijack... A friend of mine went to a Bar Mitsvah (sp?) recently and had never been to one before. Toast time came around and while everyone else yelled "Mazal tov" he yelled "Molotov" not knowing the difference. Everybody got a good chuckle! :lol

Red Dawn was a great movie. I still can watch that over and over again.
Iron Eagle was a great movie I used to watch, up untill Flight of the Intruder came along. I thought that movie was much better than Iron Eagle.
-
Flight of the Intruder was good, my nephew flew one of them , but not in Nam , long after Nam.
-
Great synopsis whels. :aok

it was russians and mexicans. i think the rusians did an airdrop of troops.
Yeah, yeah, that's right. It was the Cuba chapter of the Mexican National army.

Loved that movie as a kid, havnt seen it in years. I am tempted to buy the DVD when I see if for 5.99, but I never do.
