What a phenomenal picture! When you look at the picture below you have to realize that there are probably winds coming from the valley below so the stabilization was tricky, but the hut the helo is sitting on is mud and small timbers!
If you don't think our military pilots earn their pay ... you need to take a look at this picture ... and then look again and realize what you're seeing. :aok

This photo was taken by a soldier in Afghanistan of a helo rescue mission. The pilot is a PA Guard guy who flies EMS choppers in civilian life. Now how many people on the planet you reckon could set the butt end of a chopper down on the roof top of a shack on a steep mountain cliff and hold it there while soldiers load wounded men in the rear?

Hover, it's a beautiful ability :aok

Yes, it is, but getting your throttle/RPM's just right in a helo to achieve "hover" point is an exceptionally hard task compared to how most people see it... and being able to keep the rear end down while taking on winds and keeping it stable enough to load the wounded in... ;)

Thats just awsome.

That's a old picture, was from the first year of the war in Afghan I think, it's definly a cool picture though.

Long lining under a helo with 40mph gusting winds in the mountains at 6,000' asl I have greatist admiration for the pilots. Getting us out of a drill site in the blowing snow and white out conditions before dark was another. :salute heli pilots
