hey guys,
i was just wondering? when someone in here posts something, and someone decides to "debunk" what they've read, they quote snopes. same thing when one posts something, and wants to confirm it, snopes gets quoted.
what the hell is snopes, where did they come from, how long have they been around, and how did they become the end all/be all of information?
who verifies their stuff? how do we know we can believe it?
just curious

If you have to ask, you don't need to know.
-
I don't think that anyone thinks that Snopes.com is the end all/be all of information. However they have at least done SOME investigating and most feel they are more credible than someone who cut-and-pastes info they got in an email from Aunt Sally.

Snopes is your friend...literally : http://www.snopes.com/info/faq.asp (http://www.snopes.com/info/faq.asp)

Although their commentary can be a little biased once in a while, their facts are usually spot on.
Go on and prove them wrong. I dare ya.

snopes has almost no credibility, arguments are confused and set out with the aim of debunking, rather than establishing the extent of truth. Ive seen 1 "debunking" so far out of 10ish linked from this board which almost stacked up. The rest have been worthless. ymmv.

i may have mis-phrased myself, butr the jist of what i was trying to learn, is how/why they seem to havebecome the beall endall for facts.
bear in mind, i am NOT questioning them or anyone else, just trying to garner a bit more info, that's all. :aok

Keep shooting down your favorite pet spam emails?
Why don't you show us a few of the ones that were not accurate?

That hardly counts as a flame, he made a statement and didnt back it up.
No wonder people are getting the ban stick left and right if what I posted is a flame.

The people that tend to post bogus crap on this or any other board tend to be not so strong in the original thinking department. Hell, they aren't so strong in the thinking-at-all department. Instead they're usually just regurgitating hogwash that's been posted in thousands of other places.
Snopes is a quick way to check that status of bogocity that's been around a while because if there's sufficient evidence for it snopes either finds it or if they claim it's false, someone quickly corrects them.
It's not perfect, but frankly if someone's not going to put much effort into their bogus post, it's hard to justify spending more time on it beyond a quick snopes check. If you call BS on it, the ball's in the poster's court to come up with some evidence.

Snopes usually posts references. It's not as if they just decree that something is accurate or not.

expressed my opinion, followed by an explanation, then my experience with a sample size to put my experience in context. 10 out of 1000's of examples isn't a representative sample, hence ymmv.
I dont get spam (ty SpamAssassin :aok) so no.
I don't bookmark stuff I think is rubbish (its hard enough managing the 100's of useful bookmarks I have) any more than I keep old milk cartons, so no I can't show you the ones I read.
anything else?

Yeah, but you don't really support your opinion or your explanation or the basis of your experience with examples or facts, etc.

yeah and it contains your contribution to this topic :P
I really wish I could remember the very first snopes thing I saw, it was just a really badly constructed argument, based on a non-sequitor (that sets off airhorns and flashing lights for me) which concluded with a big red FALSE stamp on it. I remember thinking "ookay im gonna have to call BS on snopes then."
but like I said (3rd time now ) ymmv
