You'd think that after holding your own in a Ki-61 against a P-51B, a P-51D and an La-7 for about five minutes you'de get a salute and a "nice fight". I guess not.
I guess that was the old days.

Maybe they were too embarrassed to say anything.

Fishing for compliments? :rofl
Actually, I was expecting one in the arena. I'd have given one.

I've notice a lot less salutes recently. Went on break for about 2 weeks, came back, had some good fights, salute some people, never did one return it. Maybe people hate me? The people were normally part of well known squads that i have seen normally give salutes back, but i guess i picked a bad day.

1. They're new and didn't expect that to happen.
2. They're embarrassed.
3. They forgot. (They were talking to some one else, then forgot to give you your big <S>)
4. They never bothered to because they're just angry.
5. They have no sportmanship.
6. They hate you... a lot.

A few weeks ago I was up defending a field in my P-51D. A large group of Luftwaffe aircraft attacked it, I chased TWO 190D9s on the deck for quite some time. When two more 190D9s appeared ahead at 10k, then and only then did they finally turn and all 4 piled on. :rofl I got one and smoked another, and after 5 minutes I took a hit which blew half my left wing off as I was in bank at tree level. Caught it, got level and had one try and ho me. The other two curved in on my six and got my engine at which point I ate a tree. I had a great time and totally enjoyed it. Nothing on 200 from them though... Bish.. gotta love em.
Like Shane said, maybe they were embarressed!

I'd salute you Eagle. Your more like a God then a man. We should have a "salute Eagle day", say Thurs. right after the babe of the week. Eagle can start a thread hinting at his incredable cartoon exploits and we can all :salute him.
Today is Monday so we'll practice for Thurs. Ready everyone? After me..... :salute

Salutes are overrated.
-
I too have noticed a few less salutes lately. I give them out when a fight last more than a few turns or if it is someone who keeps coming back.
If it is in a case where I was shot down I just figured they are busy and then may have forgotten since the text bar moves rather quickly when tuned to 200 or when some goof is entering the 100th time about his mission. The times that I salute when I am the victor I just figure they were mad because they got shot down or they just don't quite know how (it took me some time to figure it out), but if it is someone who has been around a while then I just laugh because I am sure it is because they were mad.

The biggest compliment you can possibly get is when they log-off after you spank them.

I lost but I expected them to acknowledge a good fight.

Sounds like you expect too much baldeagl.

I don't know how many actually know what a good fight is. I'm sure less are actually looking for one. I wouldn't get your hopes up about a gang sending a <S> to you, there in it for one thing only, and that's is to dog pile on you so that 1 of them can get a kill.
I'm reading this as less of a whine about not getting a S, and more of a comment of the state of the MA, and hope I'm correct in doing so.

QQ ??

Salutes? LOL I wish not getting a salutes was my problem. Lately I get people calling me all sorts of names, not for killing them, but for not flying how they expect me to. You know, the high spit on your 6 with a friend or two in tow and they've already tried to HO you. Then they call you names because you won't turn fight the three of them in your 51. I'm not going to give them a fight... they can pound sand.

Personally, I am of the opinion that <S>'s are tossed around waaaaay too freely.
Recently, I was flying an A6M2. I was fresh out of cannon rounds but still had some MG ammo. I was attempting to break free from the fight to go back to the CV and re-arm/re-up. Along came an F4F (maybe an F6F, can't recall). He was pretty intent on shooting me down and I was pretty certain I wasn't going to get away from him very easily. So... I engaged him.
The fight lasted a few minutes. He attempted to HO me at every chance. Anytime I got behind him he stick stirred like there was no tomorrow. About the time I was about out of the pebbles I had been tossing at him, he stalled a wing and augured into the water.
Few seconds later, here came a salute from him.
I chose not to return it because....
1) I thought that his conduct had been high dweebery through the fight
2) At no time had he ever really threatened me during the fight, which is sad because I'm not a very skilled pilot.
3) If I had had a few cannon rounds, he probably wouldn't have lasted for more then two turns
4) I wasn't terribly pleased with my performance either, unable to seal the deal with the MGs alone.
Nothing in the fight seemed <S> worthy to me.
Thank you very much, but I'll save my salutes for those special fights. I see no reason to toss them out to every pilot that I come across.
It means more when it is reserved for special cases.

You are correct and that's how it was meant. While fundamentaly things haven't changed, there was a lot more sportsmanship in the old days.
-
I'm not normally on 200 but when I am it's good to see a salute or two. I don't know what happened for that person to get one but it's better than seeing the smack talking that is usually on that channel.
In the DA I give and get a few but that's because I know who they were. In the MA, unless it was truly a good fight, I won't tune and give a salute for a kill or if killed. Most of the players I shoot dn or get shot by I never heard of anyway.
Sorry if I ever missed one tho...just not tuned
Steve, you don't need a salute cause your name is Steve.

Bwahahahahahaaaaa!
Accusations of cheating are in fact the greatest salutes possible.
I should add, I've only ever gotten 1.

I like this reply!, to go further, you might would want to enocurage the opponent, ny telling him you would salute him when the fight is worthy or the opponent's flying is worthy of a salute. and explain to him everything about the fight you just had that warranted no worthy salute
not do this in a hateful manner, but in a heya s0-n-so, can I offer you some insight or tips to help your gameplay excel :aok

I consider my ride a horse and myself with a sword.
If i am still on my horse and swinging my sword, i don't have time to give salutes.
If i kill you. :salute
If you kill me. :rock
Whatever works.

I think its question of changing "values". To be candid there are times I don't return salutes or offer them. Sometimes it's frustration but a lot of the time its simply the reality that I didn't see anything worth saluting. I will always and I mean always acknowledge a good well flown 1 on 1 win or lose. However, a lot of the time I find myself on the "short end" of a progression of 1 on 1's...I had one over the weekend where I was in a Boston and had engaged a couple of cons on the way to an enemy base. When I got there there was a roughly co-alt hurricane and a lower F6F. I engaged the hurricane and kept an eye on the F6F. The fight with the hurricane was actually excellent and went for a good 7-10 minutes with the F6F circling at a distance...when I finally got the hurricanes 6 he came in and lit me up. I reversed him pretty good and a good 1 on 2 emerged with the F6F and the hurricane for about another 3-4 minutes till a C205 came screaming in and forced me to break and evade..and I dive and pull out...right into a F4U coming to the fight from the field who just lights me up right as I realize he's there.
Now I cant fault him in the sense that I was flying right at him (didnt know it)...but of course I get a salute from him.
Now I <S> the hurricane {by location and my plane etc}, asked who the F6F was, @#$# at him for bouncing the 1 on 1 AFTER staying out so long (bad form IMO) but then saluted him for the fun fight afterward...but not the hog...what was I saluting.
To a degree I think that this variable return of salutes from guys like me does lead to salutes not being offered, since they arent automatically returned or are sometimes ridiculed (rightly or wrongly). The other side is that most of us (if not all of us) dont return salutes we should because we missed them or are still @#@#$ at our selfs.
-
When I first signed up a couple of years ago it seemed like the <S> flew around like it was nothing.
I give them when I get a good fight and I'll throw one out to the friendly people on 200 whenever I see them. That's all there is to it.
-

I ALWAYS SEND OUT salutes after a good fight.....if there's time. if i'm in a furball, and need to get outta dodge, or onto the next target, i don't.
i got in a quick fight with crims the other day....and he had sent me one on 200, but i never saw it since i don't have 200 on anymore(sorry bout not returning it sir!)
but anyway, i wouldn't worry aboutg it.

The only ones in the entire sector were me and those three plus some GV's.

Hello Bald,
I have mentioned this to you in the past Sir. I was ready to give up sending them myself. Some folks do not return salutes, for whatever the reason. As a matter of a fact I had a high ranker the other night that I took out his 262 with my trusty Spit 16. Shock of all shocks, I got no return salute. I knew I did well, but maybe this fellow did not feel the same? Oh well. I say continue to send them out, and be the gentleman pilot.
Oh...
and <Salute>

Did you expect a ticker tape parade too?
ack-ack

Jeez guys - don't you think you're over analyzing this a bit?
-
I think the <S> stuff is too generic and freely used. If the guy really gave you a good fight, feel free
to tell him so. If you and 4 pals ganged someone, don't expect him to feel generous :D

I agree, the history of the salute actually goes back to WWI and the chivalry of the skies, by WWII that was gone in fact in the latter part of WWI it was gone.
-
Sometimes I'll be going to type a salute out, and then I'll receive a PM or see something on 200 that makes me hit backspace... :(
I've had it where I've saluted someone that was outnumbered that did really well, then they were a total love muffin about it. It's not like one person can control their teammates, hardly anyone listens to someone saying "I've got it, please don't engage." It's really hard to tell how someone is going to react to a <S> sometimes and that might be a deterrent for some.
-
I would salute someone... if I could actually get a kill or two under my belt. I'm not sure who said it in an earlier post on this thread, but it had something to do with "this game is about ownage.. bla bla bla". I think this game is about ... being a game. It's fun, it's somewhat realistic, as games go, but I'm sorry... I can't find the energy to "own" it.. or be "owned" by it. Geez, I got kids and work, and racing, and skiing, and houseboating, and dirtbikes, and dogs, and all that wonderful beer to concentrate on.
Sorry, I know Im that Im not purist.
lol

I agree, the history of the salute actually goes back to WWI and the chivalry of the skies
'Chivalry of the skies' was a propaganda invention dreamed up by both sides to try and detract attention from the carnage and waste of the trenches. In reality, from the point airplanes were fitted with machine guns, chivalry had little or no place in air warfare. Where's the chivalry in trying to sneak up behind someone and put twenty rounds in him before he knows you're there? If you were good, that's exactly what you were trying to do. And where the chivalry in having to ride a flamer into the ground because the ruling classes figured you wouldn't have the bottle to go in to battle if they gave you a parachute?
At various points in the war all sides saw life expectancies dip below 2 weeks for newly trained pilots and they remained firmly below those of soldiers in the trenches throughout the war.
Air warfare in WW1 was every bit as gruesome as any other type of warfare.

I give .S out sparingly. It's gotta mean something. I will give it when I am not encountering someone in a fight just to demonstrate a little respect to let them know where I stand with them. I normally will give a guy a GG if they flew a good fight against 2 or more of us or exemplified something good. As I get to know more bish and knits who consistently demonstrate good behavior I like to give them the GG too.
