Title: scores, and how they really look....
Post by: SkyRock on September 02, 2008, 06:31:06 PM
I have one fighter sortie this afternoon, and I did not realize that this was the first sortie of the tour.

here is how it went down....

Late War Tour 104 Fighter Scores for SkyRock

Kills per Death + 1 5.00 0
Kills per Sortie 5.00 0
Kills per Hour of Flight 10.44 0
Kills Hit Percentage 2.50 0
Kill Points 279.87 0

This was a true fighter sortie with 3 1 vs 1's and 1 2 vs 2.  I was in a F4U-1 and the planes I killed were in order....
spit-8
n1k2
spit16

n1k2
hurri-1  (these last two I killed as PanosGR kinda buzzed them, but I was stall fighting them both at the time.)

all were stall turn fights, that took everything I could muster to get shots on and you will notice that on my score.  look at hit%, this is how my hit percentage would look if every fight were a stall fight where you have to put some lead out there to get hits.(stall gunnery, nose bounce, trying pull guns on tighter turning plane, trying to hit n1k2 as he tried to extend to get him to stay in fight, and so on.)

Discuss.

 :salute
SkyRock

PS  the last one was SF3 in a hurri-1 and I went for it, luckily somewhere in the rolling stalls he stalled out, although I did manage hits on him the pass before.  <S> sf3

Mark,

An awful lot of "aces" can go a whole tour without a "real" fight...and there are a lot of guys with "pitiful" scores that can flat out fly the snot out of most or even all the planes here. I think thats why so many of us roll our eyes when "score" is mentioned. After all its the fight in the dog, not the score in the potato {ends in "oar" and starts with "wh"at} that counts :aok :D

this was kinda my statement.  :devil

I'd trade 50 sorties with higher score if no actual fighting was done for one sortie like this one. :aok

I will comment on the hit % aspect because that is my "thing". I've noticed by watching films of myself, past and present, that my hit % actually went up when TnB'ing, especially with a MG package, unless I happened to gank a lot of buffs in my cannon equipped E birds. I wondered why this would be so, then I realized why after some investigation. In a high speed pass with cannons on a fighter only a relatively small % of the rounds actually hit and the plane usually went down from catastrophic loss of a wing or the tail. When I TnB'd however, the majority blew up completely because once I got "saddled" I'd pour 6 X 50s into him until he exploded, so a much higher % and volume of fire were hitting from very close range.

I do this for a few reasons:

A) So I don't collide with the fuselage.
B) To make sure I get the kill even if a Niki tickled him with some 20mms ten minutes ago.
C) With a bazillion MG rounds ammo conservation isn't really a factor, so it's better to make damn sure than pull off a bandit and have to get back on him to finish him which would put myself at more risk of being cherried or KS'd.

Obviously, not all fights or opponents will afford the opportunity to really "fill in" the guy with a long burst at close range (or multiple short pulls). But, those that do will jack that hit % right up there.

You need a harder plane to fly then the F4U-1 Mark! I suggest TBM for the rest of the tour =) I love picking TBMs! They r just so fat and juicy!

If you fly TBM for the rest of the tour, I'll fly IL2 for the rest of it too! Omg just imagine an 8k IL2 diving on you doing 400 knts. There's just no escape from the rapage and hoing.

i like turnfighting......

but where zazen mentioned pouring lead downrange once he's saddled.....

i pretty much just "tickle" the con in front of me, with MG. i never seem to get completley "saddled" on them, and seem to keep getting quick snapshots. i don't mind these, as i seem to hit better than when i have time to actually aim. once i feel i have a good solution, though, then i open with guns and cannons....usually a quick burst at less than 300 is all that it takes.

one thing i have noticed though? in a slow knife fight, the con almost ALWAYS goes verticle. i don't mean trying to rope me, but rather he goes up and over in a loop. i don't really understand this, as 9 times out of 10, this is the easiest shot for me. he appears to be completley stationary up there comming over the top.

scorewise.....i won't really care. i go to the score pages to look at my hit %, then i come here to try and piss off some of you guys. :devil

I usually start to laugh to myself when they do this. Then I usually say to myself "He's dead and don't know it".

I know I should seek a mental health professional for talking to myself.

Hmm I'd say P-47D11, D25, 40, P-51B, FW-190A5-A8. I just think the F4Us and P40s can do a lot of things in the game that's impossible for it to do in RL. One of the reason why I kinda stay away from the F4Us even though it's capable of so so many aspect of the game. Great TnB, E-fighter, BnZmer but it just kinda overmodel. ^_^ just my opinion! I still think you and me should go around killing stuff in TBM, IL-2 or A20!

Of course you're a great stick, so any plane you fly will be just fine =)

Last night a bish was on range claiming the hog he was trying to shoot was turning his engine off and on... the bish was outnumbered 3:1 so I dropped in to help. Following is a slow motion film so the hit count can be seen:

Somehow I manage to completely miss the pilot and even with 300 mph 'smash' and I got an assist

Let's not forget the low torque, excellent handling at speeds ranging from stall to 480mph and its flaps that reduces the turning circle to that of a spitfire.  Apart from that, the F4u series is an absolute dog to fly.  :D

Ive always had a bad hit percentage. Not sure if attack or fighter modes matter for that, but I do know when I fire its most times in a turn fight, often with them below the cowl. Since the 50s have a higher rate of fire than the 20s,it makes sense that when you miss with them, you miss with more, making your percentage look even worse. When I use cannons, and get used to them, I start to hit alot more, and everything improves,kill/sorties, etc.

If you fly a 109k and only tap the cannon once for each kill imagine the %?

I agree that turning most of your fights will probably make your aim look poor. Mines bad..but not as bad as the scores make it look :)
