Curently have Asus K8V something mobo/3200 cpu---previous mobo died, and I tried to find same one, so I wouldn't have to deal with introducing hard drive to new CPU/mobo combo, but this one has slower FSB, and box often freezes to the point where I have to hit 'reset' button. (not temp related, as I originally thought) When that NOT happening, micro-freezes of 5-10 seconds are getting so prevalent as to make it pointless to log on...SOOO...I am gonna get new combo, (prefer mebbe 8 months to a year off whatever is newest) but I havent a CLUE as to what to get...choices seem to have expanded somewhat in last few years...suggestions?

bj229r, what price range are you looking at?
Try something like this:
http://www.mwave.com/mwave/shoppingcart.asp?scriteria=&UpDepts=&DName=&Back=&Bname= (http://www.mwave.com/mwave/shoppingcart.asp?scriteria=&UpDepts=&DName=&Back=&Bname=)

BJ229, you may want to look around your town for a small computer shop for a mb like the one you want. I had the same issue has you did with. My son found a mb at one of the local shops.

Option 1: RAM is cheap to add. (E7200)

Yah, there are 2 places I trust, problem is there are SO many models from each manufacturer, it's hard to price compare between online and local stores

I can recommend the Asus board at top in Option 1. I've had that board (Asus P5NE-SLI) for about 20 months and it's rock solid. Only down sides are is that the northbridge heatsink is fairly large and does get quite hot, 50C+ just on the fins alone. I recommend attaching a small 30-40mm fan to the top of it with double sided tape (I've done this with 2x40mm glued side by side, cooled the heatsink by a literal 15C). Also, don't plan on using it in SLI mode for performance reasons. When in SLI it only operates in 8x PCI-E while in non-sli mode it opperates at full 16x.
That board ran me about $150 Jan '07. Never had a hiccup with it.

Mwave is a good source. I've used it for my clients for years, along with Newegg.
However, if you're planning on using the motherboard 'Combo' deals, verify the combo price against individual pricing at other sites, such as Newegg. I'm getting ready to build a new system for myself, and found that I got a better overall price buying the individual components at Newegg then using the combo deal at Mwave. The Combo deal at Mwave was the same as ordering the individual componets from Mwave. There was no savings at all. Newegg gave a better deal, buying the same components separately from them. The only component that was $4.00 more at Newegg was the motherboard. The pricing was better at Newegg and most of the components also had FREE shipping.
As for a motherboard, I'd recommend the Asus P5Q-E. It's got good reviews for a mid-priced MTB. I also just put one in another Aces High player's system. It's a sweet MTB in my opinion. That's what I'm planning on going with, along with the Q9550 Intel Quad CPU, Kingston HyperX 2GB memory, BFG GeForce 9800 GTX, and the BFG ES-800 P/S, (as soon as I verify whether they've fixed the problems that have been reported with that unit).
I'm using my current case, DVD writer, etc, etc, but the cost will still be close to $800.00.
If yer looking to save money, get the Asus P5Q-E, and then pick a cheaper CPU like the Q6700 or the Q6600, (check reviews to see which one appeals to you), and instead of the High speed memory, use the regular memory until you can afford better. That will get you into the ball park. If yer already using PCI-E, then you can also save by using your existing Video Card. Using your existing Video card will also keep you from having to buy a new P/S also.
