Title: Ditching
Post by: Raubvogel on November 02, 2001, 01:05:00 AM
You get all shot up...your engine quits on final and you fight to make it to the runway...you land just short and stop 5 feet from the edge of the strip...end flight and get a DITCH? C'mon, can't this be changed? If you put a plane down anywhere in the boundaries of the field it should be a landing. You can land at a VH which has no aircraft facilities at all and get a succesful landing, but land 10 feet away from the tarmac and I guess the ground crew can't drive a tug to come get you.

Then there's the other extreme......

Last night I ran out of gas a whole sector from base, but managed to glide back at a very shallow angle.

I came into the base at about 100 feet and 200 MPH, and no way did I have the E for a go around, so I put it down halfway down the strip, knowing I'm too fast to stop on the tarmac, mashed full right rudder and right brake to "hand brake turn" my P-38 and rip the gear off to stop on the tarmac.

"you have landed safely".

a landing you can walk away from,is a good landing,,,as my old gliderplaneinstructor once said.
