How can I transform a photo into a service medal/award?
-
not sure i understand the question...what do you mean by "transform"?
-
Many programs have an emboss feature... that would be a place to start. Highlights and shiny parts would be tricky.
-
Play with contrast (increase it overall or localy) before embossing.. It should clear out most of the details you don't really need.
-
Post the photo and someone may be able to to it/tell you how to do it.

thanx guys, I'll try that.
Bucket/Fulmar, I'll try it first. If I get frustrated I'll post a pic.

You should probably get good results if you reduce it to the major facial features' lines.. Like this, for example. (http://pix.nofrag.com/2/0/4/5b982964692c331f8977795f3224dtt.jpg)

I make rowing trophies buy photoshopping an image, printing it onto a decal paper, and sliding it on to a china plate.
They come out pretty good
