I need some gv tips. After nearly 1 year in AH I'm just now beginning to learn the tank thing, and have had a few minor successes. I have a lot of gv perks from taking down ground objects, so I've been learning in the Tiger because I figure I can use all the help I can get. A few times now I've been 1-shot killed by M-4s, and from a pretty good distance out, e.g. ~2k yards, and facing me head-on. Am I doing something wrong? Is this tank only worth the perks for very long range engagements?

I'm sorry to be so vague with this answer but I know that in real life WW2 the tiger tank had real strong armor in the from and sides. I also know the rear wasn't to bad either. But the top armor was not very strong at all! So from a long distance were the shot is coming from a top Angle you are way more vulnerable! I've had this happen to me in the game too. While I never went to find out for sure, this after thinking is what I concluded.
Hope this helps :)

The Tiger's armor comes into play when facing other threats than the Firefly.
It provides a substantial advantage when fighting against Panzer IV's, T34's, Il-2 and Hurri D guns, and dodging enemy bombs. Against all those the Tiger is considerably less vulnerable than the M4 Firefly. It's just that the Firefly has a extremely powerful cannon which puts it almost on par with the Tiger in a direct faceoff.
The M4 is just much more vulnerable against those other threats, thus having lower perk value.

So it's actually better to engage an M4 from close range in the Tiger to make better use of the armor? Any comment on this advice, Lusche?
Can I assume that the M4 pulverizes the Panzer and T34 even more than the Tiger?

No. At close ranges both tanks can pulverize each other. The greater the distance, the better for the tiger, but the advantage gained is not that big.

No, it's exactly the opposite. The stronger armor of the Tiger comes into play, that's what I tried to make clear in my initial posting.

I wasn't asking about defensive capabilities. I was asking if the M4's cannon is more effective against the Panzer and T-34 than the Tiger's.
Thanks for your help though. :salute

ooops...
In that case, from my experience both cannons are on par vs other tanks, perhaps with a slight advantage to the Tiger.
However, in any battle situation both offensive as well as defensive factors are equally important most of the time ;)

The standard sherman's cannon wouldn't do much against a Tiger imho. But then Im no WW2 GV expert.. :P :D
The "firefly" on the other hand has that killer 17lb shell, which most definitely will hurt anything even a Tiger.
Tigers are like sniper rifles. The greater range the engagement, the better your odds (took on and destroyed 3 T34s on their way to my base yesterday in one).
In a up-close and personal fight though, a sniper always loses to the knife-man.... :lol :lol
If the Tiger's a snapper turtle, the firefly's a turtle without a shell. It can bite just as hard, move better but lacks the protection of a tiger. So in a situation where a T34 would scratch a Tiger, it might just kill a M4.
The Tigers armor is tough but at close ranges can easily be penetrated especially at its weaker joints.
Perked GVs are just like perked planes. Expect to be the center of attention whilst in one, and keep every con at a yards length. :aok

Fwiw, I believe that the M4's cannon is more powerful than the Tiger's. My evidence is that I can get into a Tiger vs. Tiger fight where both of his hit each other multiple times without damage, while the M4 can kill a Tiger with 1 shot. The 6:1 perk cost of the Tiger vs. the M4 is totally unjustified.

Shot placement and range counts a LOT.

Definately agree there.
