An enemy CV fleet had steered into our fleet and sunk both the CV and Cruiser. Feeling bored I jumped into a corvette .50cal and started shooting at the cruiser. After around 300 rds the Cruiser sunk! To make sure it wasn't a fluke I tried it on the CV... the same happened!
Are these really .50cal guns on the Corvettes or something a little large? I am talking about the pesky little tiny guns mounted on the side, there's just two of them on Corvettes.

I'm not sure what guns are mounted on the little Destroyer Escorts, but I do know there were several recorded instances of Destroyers and smaller ships being sunk by concentrated strafing by .50's on American aircraft.

Should 20 mm or 37 mm cannon be able to take out an air-craft carrier?

No, but .50cal and 20mm shouldn't be able to take out a PzIV either ;)
