Title: Ammo Comparison
Post by: Schlowy on September 15, 2008, 12:22:58 AM
This other game is IL2, I think, I don't play it, I don't support it, I don't endorse it.

That being said, seems like any 109's in IL2 are much more lethal than here in AH2. One could say that the whole damage scale is turned down here in AH2, but some AH2 planes do kill with only a snap shot... go figure.

Consider the pebble:

The last shot in the film where the 51 overshoots is sweet. :D

Did you notice how frequently the 109's had 20mm gondolas?

When I hit with gondolas, the target disintegrates. Not sure what you're talking about.

Unless you're saying the MG151/20s are undermodeled, in which case you should just come out and say it. :)

Vs the 51, neat, that guy was torq'ing it LOL, did you see how much faster his roll rate was too? (the reason the landing gear was so close together shows in there)

the choice becomes... maneuvering qualities of a brick, or bring a lunch because going to need to shoot all all all day, no snap shots about it.

Why didn't I just say? I didn't want any cheese with that.

In my opinion IL2 is a better game as far as damage and flight modeling go.  The only reason I fly AH2 more is because I prefer flying with real poeple, not computers.  If AH2 had IL2's flight model and damage model I would be a poor sad person who never left his computer.  It's really cool in IL2 when you shoot up someone's wing and their controls are all screwed along with it generating less lift and more drag because of the massive amount of holes punched through it.

The comment above about the gondolas is right though.  I fly 109s almost exclusively in AH2.  Snap shots with 3 20mm's are devistating.  A snap shot with a single 30mm will ruine your day as well.  The way I shoot in AH2 is with snap shots almost all the time unless the victim is running away.

Something else to keep in mind is that a lot of single player games alow for different difficulty settings of which can include scaled damage from both the player's ride and the opponent's ride.

IL2's model = crap

IL2 only has a more COMPLEX damage system. That doesn't mean a "better" one.

As for gunnery in AH, you have to land your hits. I've regularly got kills with a 109F (a single 20mm hub gun) by firing only 20 rounds of cannon at a P-51D. You CAN easily get snapshots that deal major damage to your target, and/or instantly kill it. All this with a single "underpowered" cannon.

You simply have to learn to aim in AH. Once you land your rounds on target they do all the damage they need to.

Is that comment coming from an opinion of a gamer or an actual pilot?  AH2's flight model is WAY too forgiving to its pilots.  Even with the stall limiter off its difficult to go into a really bad stall and even then its even more rare to have an unrecoverable stall.

As simulations go, more complex is better in my book.  If you want a FPS then simple is probably your ticket.

You are right about the gunnery and damage in 109s.  With a single 20mm it doesn't take much if you are accurate with it.  Many people who fly planes with a large number of wing mounted guns aren't used to the precise aiming it takes to down a plane with something that shoots like a rifle with wings.

For newbies, stall limiter is by default on. Go into your flight settings and uncheck it.

I personally feel there aren't enough torque effects on MANY planes in AH. However, AH has by FAR the better flight model especially when it comes to stalls, spins, and departures. IL2 has every plane with the same flight model. AH has separate models for each plane.

That said, it's not perfect, but much better than IL2.

P.S. Hitech has his own RV-8. He also has this modeled in-game using the flight model. He can test something in-game and know it feels like the real thing because he has it. He also has flight-time in a P-51D 2-seater.

Keep in mind, in Il-2 the earlier 109G's have a tater gun option just like they should in AH.  So even when you see the 109 decimate a target in that video without gondolas, it might be with the 30mm Mk108.
