Title: Jettison Ordinance
Post by: Anaxogoras on September 16, 2008, 11:17:28 AM
Yay, I did a search!

I would like to be able to jettison ordinance with a key combo like "shift-whatever."  Not only is it a pain to get rid of rockets one by one when the sh*t hits the fan, but you also have to worry about killing yourself with your own bomb.

Did WW2 aircraft have the ability to jettison ordinance, and especially could they disarm a bomb before it was dropped?

Now this is a little later than WW2, but the Phantoms I worked on had a station select knob
for the ordnance/fuel loadouts on the wings.  In the center of the knob was a red inset button that
allowed an all stations jettison, which was handy if you had to do a wheels up landing, or battle
damage.

I'm guessing not, since they were usually armed via lanyard and spin-fuse.

Could WW2 aircraft jettison ordinance? Could they jettison rocket pods like they do nowadays?
 :salute

I believe they could. I have a good photo of a Lancaster cockpit and it does have a Jettison Payload button.

I did a search and came up with this topic and think that it is a fine idea. For those who worry about their score it would be nice, as well as a quicker way to dump ords that would be more realistic and result in a cleaner airframe. I wonder though if it was possible on WWII aircraft? I read sometimes about Jug and Pony pilots dumping ords, sometimes calling it jettisoning, when they see enemy aircraft.

Just think it would be a very nice ability. Of course I would probably never get to a target with ords then :)

Your wish was already answered. .salvo 20 will jettison everything as fast as the game will allow. Just type it in on or before takeoff.

That's my understanding although I thought on the large bombers the bombardier had to go remove a safety pin prior to release.   Obviously this wouldn't be an option on single seat aircraft. :)

From what I have read the large bombers could do it if the crew could access the bomb bay in flight to disarm the ord, but fighter-bombers couldn't. Most of the fighter-bombers would try to "jettison" their ordinance into the ocean or the sparsely populated country side if they could since they couldn't disarm the ord before release.
