Title: Cheap 500GB HD deal
Post by: eagl on September 17, 2008, 08:56:18 PM
All,

The topic of components for upgrades keeps coming up, so anyone looking to build up a new system needs to look at this deal:

$69 for a 500GB hard drive.  I don't think you'll find a cheaper deal anywhere, and this would be perfect for any "consumer" RAID setup.

that Ultra / ChillTec looks like quite the beast.  I don't think it's fit in my computer without hitting my 120mm exhaust fan in the back.

Edit:  Maybe not, but that beast weighs over 2lbs!  And power hungy at 50W when the CPU is up to 100%

and NOISY! plus for what it is it doesnt cool a whole lot better. I checked the reviews on it two months ago and I was very close to buying it too.

If you're looking for an extreme cpu cooler, look no further than the thermalright coolers.  Those suckers consistently kick butt in almost every comparison.  Their 120mm fan tower cooler (can't remember the name of the cooler) is plenty good enough and it cools very well with pretty much any 120mm fan.

I've been very happy using thermalright (not thermaltake!) coolers for several years now.  Quality coolers at mid-range prices.

I have the world's loudest 120mm fans.  2x120mm 2000 RPM fans = able to hear from outside my room.

I have two of those fans, two 80mm fans, two PSU fans, and a smallish CPU cooler. Used to have a PCI slot fan. Thing's louder than a turbine.

I can really never get the cable management in my cases to look really pretty.  Mainly because most of my computers are pretty full with expansion cards, extra hard drives, 2 optical drives and fans galore.

Yep, you can.  I put a floppy in my new machine and have a round cable.  All they do is take a ribbon cable and pack it into a round sleeve.

I keep 4-5 scavenged ones with me at all times for when I need to load RAID drivers.  I keep that many because I find that they always go bad.  On the other hand, I have a USB floppy drive (cant use with RAID drivers on XP install) that I bought for $3 on a surplus sale at my former university and it has never failed me.

I only use it for BIOS flashes and I've flashed 3 times since I built this thing.

My current build has a backup BIOS chip, so that use isn't there, but I do have to use a floppy for RAID and/or SATA drivers.
