Title: Stall turn?
Post by: a4944 on September 18, 2008, 04:56:28 PM
Hi All,
I've run into a 109K4 and 190A5 that both reversed very quick when using the vertical.  I assume this is some kind of stall turn but I could just be seeing it wrong.  Is there a technique to this?  I would like to give it a try.

Thanks,
Venom

They might be using a Hammer head maneuver which is basically what you described. But I have heard about moves in K4s that match this description also. Also since when do we have K4s in the AVA  :huh

I've been here for awhile.  The K4 was during the BoA.  I think it was JimBean or a name similar flying it at the time.  So, how is it done?  Do you just kick in rudder at the stall?

Frankly it depends on the plane. The 38 as I know is probably the easiest plane to do it in if you have dual throttles. But also like I said there are many maneuvers that involve going into the vertical and reversing in a very short amount of time.

I don't know that what you're describing is a hammerhead- it doesn't sound like it. A hammer head would require you to be in the vertical long enough to bleed down to 100-150 mph airspeed. It's not really a quick reversal, just a great way to come out of a rope.

I'll occasionally snap stall a 109K in such a way in the vertical that it will immediately position me face down at the enemy, this may be what you're describing.

I've seen em doing it alot, it's kind of a hybrid hammerhead. Done not in a pure vert but in a climb. They also don't usually come fully around in a perfect nost to tail sideways move, but kind of a quick barrell roll.

The 38's do it as well but going up or down rather than left/right.

Thanks Shane.  You were the 190A5 stick.  Was hoping you read these forums.  I'll review the films when I get home from work.  I'll have to experiment with the opposite control inputs for rudder and airelons.
