Title: Arcade mode or relaxed physics?
Post by: YourDead on January 09, 2000, 09:22:00 PM
I played yesterday for the first time and I kept getting killed.  Somehow I managed 1 kill, after 2 hours.

But I have played Fighter Ace from Microsoft in arcade mode it was fun and I was good at it.  There was no blackout/redout, easier flight model, etc.  This type of mode would be helpful to newbies, who could then move on to full physics gameplay.

I give this game 2 thumbs up.  Even though I suck at it, I think its revolutionary.  Yesterday, my B-17 fell apart after a high G turn, I could hear the fuselage metal stretching and tearing.  I also like how you go about taking airfields, paratroops, unlike just landing at the base like in WarBirds.

Umm.. field capture in Warbirds has been by way of parachute drop from Ju-52 for about a year now.

"There was no blackout/redout, easier flight model"

AND I HOPE THERE NEVER IS!

This as good as it gets. No training wheels for AH pilots, baptism by fire! WHO-RA!

I hope there is NEVER, EVER a relaxed/arcade arena of any kind in this sim.
FA II, WB's "ACA"  and AW "RR"  *are* the "Aces High" training gound.

 Imho of course....

YourDead,

Once you have had a chance to get used to this more advanced flight model, I am sure you will find each kill all that more satisfying.  It gives rides like the P51 and the F4 a reason for being!  Isnt it nice knowing that an Uberspit isnt going to stay awake during a 10G break turn to end up on your six?

I was talking about the old Warbirds.  The one that has been released for almost 3 years.

I just wish there was someway to turn off blackout/redout.

If I had some more reading material on the game, then I could probably do better.  What are the maximum gun ranges?

On the P-51, are the 2 outer guns on each wing machine guns and the inner gun on each wing is the cannon, right?

Shoot at no more than 600ft....preferably half that distance.  I usually begin firing at 400ft and continue till hes dead.  That hasnt stopped spits 800ft behind from trying to wing my Stang!  (http://bbs.hitechcreations.com/smf/Smileys/default/smile.gif)

Regarding redout/blackout, it wouldnt be fair to pilots who choose to fly with it if other pilots had the option of turning it off.  Imagine trying to evade a 10G spit-turn with blackouts enabled  (http://bbs.hitechcreations.com/smf/Smileys/default/smile.gif)

There is plenty of information pertaining to Warbirds which is directly applicable to Aces High.  Same for Air Warrior.  Hell, if you have flown other sims, you will do fine in this sim once you have acclimated to the environment.  (http://bbs.hitechcreations.com/smf/Smileys/default/smile.gif)

No, I just assumed.  I forgot something.  In FA there are 2 models, there is one with 6 machine guns and anothe with machine guns and 2 cannons.

There should atleast be a way to remove the cockpit and display only crucial instruments, like altimeter, airspeed, etc.  Maybe in another version...

But I still think an arcade mode would be cool.

Yourdead,

ROFLMAO.. go back to FA please!  (http://bbs.hitechcreations.com/smf/Smileys/default/biggrin.gif)

I don't think AH is any mix up of quake+planes..(?)

If you don't like about that what happend in real world, this is not your game.

Fishu be nice, he's not asking for quake.

Yourdead AH is a bit of a higher level sim than AW or FA and so the difficulty is much greater. Hence since realism is given importance a "virtual cockpit" would destroy some of the advantages different planes had in being able to see the enemy. For example a P51 had incredible visibility all the way around due to it's bubble canopy but a F4U had almost no rear view due to it's cockpit design. With a virtual presentation the F4U gains a great advantage it should never have in real life.

I enjoy WW2 air combat more than modern air combat.  But when it comes to games, I'm more into fun than having to think alot.

I only played FA to test it out.  I think $50 a month for ADSL internet access is enough.  I'd only pay $50 to buy any game and get free online play.

Then YourDead you should look into another line of sims. AH is here to make you think hard, put effort into what you are doing. Like I said, it is a higher line of realism. Don't waste people's time trying to make it something it is not please.

I may be one of the few who actually STARTED their flight-sim experience with AH (not counting some well-enjoyed campaigns in the original Red Baron).  At first, I was expecting the arcade style "up, down, left, right" control technique.  After spinning circles on the runway like a square-dance couple on crack a few times, I read the FAQ, and talked with a friend who has a great deal of flight sim experience.  After getting the basics on flight control, I have progressed to the point that I can actually fly, kill, and land!  Imagine that!!  Then, last week, I found an old demo disc with WarBirds on it, and thought, "oooooh.. kewl.. another sim to fly."  For its time, it is a great game, but after I have been flying in AH, my reaction was, to say the least, unenthusiastic.  Compared to AH, I had no sense of really flying, controlling my somewhat tempermental machine, or needing a very steady hand on the guns.  For me, there is no comparison.  I guess when you start out on the best, all others pale in comparison.  Oh, and I also loaded up a copy of Fighter Ace... EWWWWWWW.  Again, at one time I guess it was a fun game, but after you've had Dom Perignon, why drink Boone's Farm?  I only hope I can talk my kids in to giving up one or two meals a week to support my new addiction.. heh..

Yea, I'm getting used to this game already.  Flying the Buff or B-26 is fun.  I still have to learn how to maneuver in the fighters without passing out all the time.

YourDead - i got this advise while back and have been passing it for a long while...

When you start flying - try making manouvers with two fingers holding the stick. Thumb and index finger. This teaches you to be gentle with the plane, and in the long run teaches you that it is not the guy who pulls on the stick the most that wins  (http://bbs.hitechcreations.com/smf/Smileys/default/wink.gif)

I gave up fighters for now.  I mostly fly the B-17 and sometimes the B-26 or C-47.  I'm a pretty good shot with the B-17's guns and bombing bases from 21k ft is fun.
