Late lastnight a Learjet carrying Travis Barker crashed on takeoff, they said that it over ran the runway and crashed through a fence and ended up on a hill just after crossing a road, the jet exploded in flames killing 4, the pilot & co-pilot, Travis's assistant Chris Baker, who just got married & had a baby. Apparently only Travis and a guy named DJ AM survived by jumping from the already burning plane as soon as it stopped, their both in a GA hospital in a burn unit, Travis was burned from the waist down but will live.

Crazy since they say that ATC saw sparks coming from the plane. Not a big Blink182 fan or a fan of the guy but I feel sorry for the families who lost loved ones and for the two guys that made it out alive. Hopefully they will make a decent recovery but burns take years to begin to get over and some never quite make it a full recovery.

i can't possibly believe that ATC controllers would not have said anything to them about sparks out of an engine. i also am wondering if there were warnings of any sort going off in the cockpit. i would imagine there were.

wow, that really stinks dude. Seems like all the good musicians, who actually know their instrument always get killed.

The controllers said they "saw sparks while the a/c was on take-off roll". They said nothing about sparks coming from the engines at all, you are only speculating on a accident that occurred less than 24 hours ago.
Take-off in any Learjet model takes only a few seconds, from the point take-off power is set to when the aircraft reaches a positive rate of climb. This leaves practically no time for a controller to see and then notify a crew of a problem, then expect that crew to be able to abort.
I know you're an ace 172 Jockey, but please remember the crews and the controllers are well trained professionals and would do anything within their power to prevent an accident like this.

Running over the runway seems to be quite a common accident, with more and less severe consequences. The most severe crashes occur just shortly after the extended runway area. Why don't they install wires across the field after the runway to slow down aircraft that have overran the runway? Powerlines can literally stop a small aircraft midair and leave it dangling from the cables at the heights (so far happened at Heathrow and just recently somewhere in Germany). Few wires across the field to catch the landing gears could slow down or stop the aicraft before it runs outside the airport perimeter where the most fatal accidents occur. Multiple wires installed along the runway heading could progressively slow down the aircraft, limiting the damage to the landing gears and ensure that there will be wires left even if one or two of the wires are cut.
They only recently came up with the simple idea of experiementing traffic lights at the US airports to avoid accidental runway incursions due to miscommunication.

Thats one of the dumbest ideas I've ever heard of. They DO have EMAS (Engineered Material Arresting System) installed in some places which is used to stop aircraft on short(er) runways. JFK has it installed on a couple runways with over 30 such systems installed to date at more than 20 airports last blurb I read about it. Chicago Executive is looking to add it to their runway I'm told and also extend their runway by 600' for instance. The performance gains for jet airplanes that 600' allows is huge which can make the difference between a fuel stop and a non-stop trip.
Columbia is plenty long and overruns are not a major concern with over 8000' available on each runway. The Lear 60 does have rather notorious brakes in that they are the same as those on the Lear 35 but with a LOT more weight for them to stop thus making them less effective. If something happened requiring an abort there should have been enough room to stop but if you throw in a brake failure or antiskid system failure those numbers go right out the window. There are a lot of ways for this to happen and the NTSB will do their job.
It's far too early to speculate on what happened so CAP Yeager and all else please don't. I didn't know either of the pilots directly but one of my good friends knew the captain and one of the guys in my flight department knew the contract pilot flying the accident airplane with her.

Despite the tatoos freack look, Travis Baker seemed a reasonable guy, and a good dad. I hate to see creews not being able to make it out of a hairy situation :( As far as what happened, I'm looking foward to NTSB findings!

Indeed. There would be no time to alert the pilot and such if the ATC saw anything.

there are only 2 from me..the original you menitioned in your post i just replied to, and the one i deleted...less than 2 minutes after i posted it. and i NEVER said anything was bs in that one.

Lots of musicians and actors have died in air crashes. But you probably don't know that.
