So McCain wants to go to Washington and see what he can do about the economy crisis, but obama wants to keep going.
Interesting, I think this makes obama look less concerned about the enocomy then McCain since he wants to keep working towards personal gain and McCain wants to stop and help.
-
But wait... I thought the fundamentals of the economy were strong, this isn't a excuse to get out of Fri's debate now is it.. ;)
Does he plan to help like he did in the savings and loan scandal from the early 90's?
-
Yeah I just read that myself. Pretty much telling Obama that the job comes first, and since they are both still Senators they need to be in their seats doing the job they are being paid for instead of running around trying to get votes.
Makes me like the guy even more.
Wonder if Obama, if he even shows up, will actually vote or just hit the "present" button?

obama and the democrats want the economic crisis to get worse, then obama will be elected so he can save the country and the world.
-
The Obama campaign said in a statement that Obama had called McCain around 8:30 a.m. Wednesday to propose that they issue a joint statement in support of a package to help fix the economy as soon as possible. McCain called back six hours later and agreed to the idea of the statement, the Obama campaign said. McCain's statement was issued to the media a few minutes later
It kind of looks like it took the McCain campaign about six hours to figure out how to try and out maneuver Obama, first move by Obama, but that wont matter :)

obama has just announced that if McCain does not show up obama will debate the teleprompter.

Yea I was just reading that as well.. Looks like not only is McCain a hot head he can't keep his word and essentially stabbed Obama in the back trying to get a political gain. If that's true it really shows his true colors. So much for the straight talk express..

That would be about the same as actually debating McCain anyway. ;)
-
obama has been campaigning for the last 19 months, why should he go to Washington now? He will just vote present.

Perhaps you might just realize that they still have jobs to do. With $800 million dollars on the line, maybe, just maybe they ought to both be concerned about what their jobs are currently
As for the debate, Obama is nothing without a teleprompter. Every one knows that. McCain will wipe the floor with him when it comes time to debate.
-
Yep Obama was just giving a speech and said he contacted McCain's camp at 8am this morning trying to set up a joint press release stating that both candidates agreed to work on the bail out issue. MacCain's people called him back at 2pm agreeing to it in which Obama spoke to McCain. By the time Obama got back to his hotel room McCain went ahead and released a press release turning it into partisan politics, instead of issuing the joint release like he agreed to.
Amazing how low the Republicans have too keep stooping trying to play dirty politics. I wonder what McCain will have to say as a reply. Will it be a "miscommunication" blame it on a intern rebuttal? :lol

umm it's $700 billion and Obama just gave a press release saying he supports working on the issue and said he contacted McCain at 8am this morning trying to get McSame to agree to a joint press release in support of this. McCain agreed to it, then turned around and rushed out his own press release playing partisan politics.

Excuse me for mistyping million when I should have typed billion.
Just because Obama's camp says something does not mean it is true. You liberals are so frigging blind. If this proposed bailout isn't done right, we are collectively screwed. They have jobs to do. Not worry about campaigning. McCain saying they needed to postpone the debate was the right thing to do. The question to ask is:
Why the f*** didn't Obama just say "Yes, we need to take care of this Plan first."
-
dirty politics?
We are in a genuine crisis. I'd feel foolish engaging in political debates while the country is fighting for financial survival of our children - wouldn't you Crockett?
Seems as though McCain saw the larger picture. Your "dirty politics" is more like SOUR GRAPES.

Did you not read what I wrote? Obama just released a press release stating he supported doing. Why is it McCain couldn't wait and issue a joint statement showing unity on this issue, instead of turning it into partisan politics?

Just stfu and go do your jobs.

McCain knows that he is about to have Phil Gramm hung around his neck like an albatross. Obama is going to destroy McCain in the debates, and McCain knows it.
So he's hiding.
Only the wingnuts in the O'Club would regard NOT facing the public and stating your policies for moving ahead in a public forum as progress.

Considering Obama's stuttering and stammering when his teleprompter goes on the frits......I somehow doubt that he is going to destroy anyone in a debate.

Pull your head out of the clouds and watch Obama when he is trying to answer unscripted questions.
Er, ah, um, well, ahh, err.... stutter....
McCain is a far better man when it comes to Q&A and Obama knows it. That's why he (Obama) only wants to do three debates.

Duh Equis, do you have kids? If you do, you might find it bothersome that our generations cannot foot this bill ... which will come due for our kids just about the time all the baby boomers are retireing with now worthless pentions, and when government managed social security collapses, all amidst an energy crisis. Add global warming to that if you are religieous.
-
So Obama is going to win this debate friday on foreign policy? I think NOT. They both need to get to Washington along with all the other folks that work for US and get this thing right. It does not matter who had the idea first. What matters is that WE THE PEOPLE become the investors for these companies. WE get the benefit of any profits that come from this bailout. The CEO's and management of Wall Street need to suck it up and go live like the majority for a change.
P.S. Foreign poilicy is not one of Obama's strong areas.

Gee..I know that Congress is a bunch of bumbling fools but you don't think that 533 of them can get the job done, it takes all 535?

I have a total leg to stand on. It's called the economic bailout they are proposing. It involves huge amounts of taxpayer money.
You liberals are the one's scrambling for a leg to stand on.... especially considering the BS over joint statements. To hell with statements, stop trying to make your arse look good and get to Washington and do your frigging job.

So who was thinking of the Children, when Regan doubled the National debit? Who was thinking of the Children when Bush Sr almost doubled the national debit in only 4 years (not for trying because he almost managed)? Who was thinking of the children while George Bush Jr has been busy more than doubling the national debit in the last 8 years?
The only president to not double the national debit in the last 4 was that evil liberal Bill Clinton.. You know from the so called big spending party of the Democrats. In fact in the last 100 years of this nation, the only presidents that have managed to double the national debt in their terms have been Republicans..
Your right think of the children.. vote a Democrat into office.
Granted but Bush Jr's hasn't been updated to show his full effect.. The truth speeks volumes..
Left Debt Change

Wow, this is stunning to me. Obama is making a huge mistake not coming back to Washington. What's he going to do, stand there at the podium and mock McCain for not showing up when McCain is in Washington trying to help deal with the problem? This is going to totally blow up in his face despite how the media will portray it.
There's plenty of time to debate. This crisis is the paramount issue that has to be dealt with, and must be dealt with now. What would pushing the debate back a week or so hurt?
Again, I'm shocked. Obama had one play, and he didn't take it. Mark my words, this blunder will be what the election swings on.

It's actually easy for either candidate to make such a statement right now...You can say, "Let's do something!" and get lot's of popular support. However, what if that something is wrong? What if this package is a phenomenally bad idea (As we discussed in another thread, because it gives too much power to an un-elected official.) In one aspect, since they are candidates for the White house, and are currently getting alot of publicity, you could say that they are actually doing a better job than if they were in D.C. sitting on the Senate floor pushing the "present" button. They could use this popularity to the advantage of any bailout bill. However, they both still ARE Senators. They are in essence, still obliged to get to Capitol hill with their colleagues, and vote on the subject. In reality, it's hard to say which course of action is better, in this instance.

If McCain helps to push through a badly written/worded Bailout bill that gives the control of all of this money to some petty little bueracratic tyrant who can't even be brought on trial in event of a scandal, It will blow up in McCain's face.

Absolutely true. But we won't know the answer to that question for a few years... which is exactly why they should be there to make sure the bailout is done as best it possibly can be done.
And by the way, isn't Obama currently a U.S. Senator? This is the single biggest thing Congress has dealt with in the new mellenium, with repricussions that will follow for years to come, and he isn't going to be there to take part? Here would be his chance to finally do something worthwhile in the Senate, and he isn't taking it. This is a huge opportunity he is wasting. The people advising him are total idiots if they don't see this.

Obama has been running for President since around day 148 of his congressional career. He hasn't been there doing his job since not long after he got it. Why should this month or next be any different?

I mean I just cannot believe this... this isn't about dirty political tricks or who called who when and said what... adversity in life brings us unforseen opportunities. At this moment, Barak Obama has a huge opportunity here to step up and be a leader and do the things he would want us to believe he would do as president. Yet he is choosing to do nothing.
I'm speechless.

Not even having a clue that Zapatoro is the president of Spain... thinks he's a Central American leader in interview.

McCain wasn't making these mistakes 4 or 5 years ago. His short term gaffes, that weren't there before, I think, are an indication of a deteriorating mental state.

From the Associated Press, posted approx 7:30pm EST.
NEW YORK - The economic crisis and raw politics threatened to derail the first presidential debate as John McCain challenged Barack Obama to delay the Friday forum and join forces to help Washington fix the financial mess. Obama rebuffed his GOP rival, saying the next president needs to "deal with more than one thing at once."
Let's see, McCain understands the situation, and is choosing to put country before his own ambition. Obama doesn't much give a crap about the country and the current economic crisis, he is all about his ambition.
Pretty clear I think who should be elected, and it isn't the self-serving clown.
-
It's like I said. Obama is an empty suit.
You aren't the only one who has been saying that.

This bill has nothing to do with the financial crisis. This is a very sorry attempt to blame republicans. It was democrats that had control of Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac. One was barney, the pimp, frank.
Hilliary was on one of the talk shows and just outright lied through her teeth about this.
Right now the FBI is investigating both of those Democrat institutions. I can't wait for Barney to be subpoenaed.

McCain:

I wish I could know whether the bailout is a good idea (I'm 60/40 in favor, taking into account the frightening stuff which may happen to our country) but apparently if McCain doesn't step out front GOP lawmakers aren't gonna vote in favor either. Alas, it loks like most lawmakers of both aisles are worrying more about how they will LOOK than whether or not the vote is a good idea or not
http://blogs.abcnews.com/politicalradar/2008/09/stephanopoulo-4.html
ABC News' George Stephanopoulos reports: If Republican presidential candidate Sen. John McCain doesn't vote for the Bush administration's $700 billion economic bailout plan, some Republican and Democratic congressional leaders tell ABC News the plan won't pass.
"If McCain doesn't come out for this, it's over," a Top House Republican tells ABC News.
A Democratic leadership source says that White House Chief of Staff Josh Bolten has been told that
Democratic votes will not be there if McCain votes no -- that there is no deal if McCain doesn't go along.

Not many economists will agree on all points of an economy.
Right now this country is facing a financial crisis. I'd rather see that addressed and have a televised debate postponed a week or two until this issue is resolved.

Obama suggested that he and McCain make a joint statement...about the crisis. Not that they should go to Washington. McCain suggested going to Washington...to which Obama said...No.
and Reid would of COURSE not want McCain there....heaven forbid McCain do his FIRST job.
At 8:30 this morning, Senator Obama called Senator McCain to ask him if he would join in issuing a joint statement outlining their shared principles and conditions for the Treasury proposal and urging Congress and the White House to act in a bipartisan manner to pass such a proposal,” spokesman Bill Burton said.
“At 2:30 this afternoon, Senator McCain returned Senator Obama’s call and agreed to join him in issuing such a statement. The two campaigns are currently working together on the details,” Burton continued.
But McCain’s camp said Obama never reached McCain in the morning call because McCain was meeting with economic advisers and talking to leaders in Congress. Afterward, McCain phoned Obama and expressed deep concern that the plan on the table would not pass as it currently stands. He asked Obama to join him in returning to Washington to lead a bipartisan effort to solve this problem.
Obama said the two still plan to issue a joint statement.
“I made the suggestion to him, he agreed to that suggestion and made the suggestion in addition that we need to have a meeting in Washington with congressional leaders and the president,” Obama said, noting that by time he got back to his hotel McCain had made his announcement.

Do you ever tell the truth? Would you know the truth if it jumped up and slapped you?
I will give you one thing, you are the definitive liberal, telling lie after lie as if doing so makes it the truth.

obama.. this is the worst crisis since the market crash in 1929.
mccain ...i'm stopping my campaign and going back to DC to work on fixing it.
obama.... i'm going to keep campaigning for president, call me if you need me.
bush...get your butt back here and get to work.
obama...yes sir.

Actually, when the entire congress basically says.. "you two really don't need to be here...." and McCain screams "panic"..... This is not the stability this country needs at the ship's helm.
You are being manipulated by a campaign that knows it's on the ropes from the past week's gaffes. To now appear like a saviour.... one senator suspends his campaign. Amazingly, most of you fall for it. It's gamesmanship and it's disgusting. Wouldn't it be amazing if McCain cancelled the VP debate as well......? LOL.... you know it's coming.
Please feel free to find another instance where this has happened in American politics. The Iranian Hostage crisis didn't stop the debates of that time (a sitting US president at the time, BTW). The U.S.S. Cole bombing didn't stop the debates of that time. You fools are the "sheeple" you so desperately seek to brand..... easily led around by amorphous actions.
McCain is hitting the reset button. His numbers in the battleground states are dictating it.....they're all dropping like stones.
Also, BTW... everything at T-minus 48 days until an election is ABOUT the election.

This is completely ridiculous, what is him going back to Washington gonna accomplish, is McCain gonna save the economy? I think the best thing for America would be for him to debate Obama Friday to show America just where the 2 of them stand on issues, rather then cancel his campaign to head to Washington to make people think he's right on top of saving the economy.
The guys a liar too, if you watched Letterman tonight you would have seen that he called Dave told him he had to cancel his appearance because he was running to the airport to get back to Washington to save the economy, and during the show he cut to a live feed of McCain doing an interview down the street with Katy Couric.
-
Does it make a difference if they are both there?...maybe not, but I think both Democrat and Republican members of Congress want the 2 guys who may be in the next president suit..to have their signature on the bill...no going back and blaming the other party if it fails miserably
should they be there? Yes --they are elected officials who have a duty to their constuents to represent them
Was it a political move on McCains part? - yes - he one upped Obama - Obama's staff blew it, McCains staff was a little more politically astute in the reaction..
Will it backfire on McCain? maybe, looks like a grandstanding play on his part, also will be bad if he can't "lead" his Republican forces to come to a bipartisan agreement...also spinning it as McCain worried he is looking bad on polls and needs to stop and get a grip...Smart move on Obama's staff ? ...maybe, playing it like ..He is not a savior, it requires more than just me to get this done, he will do his best to make it work, but, it all depends on how much the republicans care about getting it done for the best results for the average american,
Lots of political bs ...

You liberals still don't get it.
This economic bail out bill is bigger than anything that you previously mentioned. The two people that are running for President need to be there, and participate in the debate of the issue at hand. The debate can be rescheduled, very easily. You claim it is "so important" and that somehow the economic bail out bill should take second pace. How about realizing that politics aside, this could very well be one of the biggest issues of the last 50 years?
But hey, you flipping liberals will do everything you can to make sure that flaming idiot Obama gets into office. I just hope that if he does, you live long enough to regret your stupidity.
-
Aren't both of these guys paid to do a job? Is this not time for them to do their job?
Not issue some speech from some battleground state but actually do the work?
What would be a big enough crisis to get osamabinbiden off the pander trail? What if he wins and runs for re-election? What will be a big enough deal for him to stay away from the crowds and the teleprompter?
lazs
-
Yep. Damn McCain for putting the country and it`s people first.
You would think that was his job or something.
-
Obama has said hes campaigning. His words were on not being in Wash working on this that they will "Call me if they need me"
Good to know hes so proactive in a crisis.Guess hes gonna go on vacation if he wins and wait till some one needs him.

Why isn't the debate held in Washington D.C.?
I've been asking myself that since this became an issue. How hard is it to each get to DC, get involved in the bailout planning and than take Friday night to debate?
Seems silly really.

I agree bongaroo, why not do both.

Has anyone heard anyone asking that? What would prevent it?

Here is an opportunity to demonstrate leadership on the national stage in a time of economic trouble. So who's stepping up to lead? To bring CHANGE to this situation that so clearly requires it?
(I hesitate to use the word crisis because I think there are solutions available that don't totally screw the taxpayer, put responsibility and accountability where it belongs and restores liquidity to the system. See these articles, pay attention to the comments by Meltzer in the roundtable discussion.

Yes who is stepping up to lead the McCain campaign in a time of need? It sure isn't Palin, the so called number two that is expected to run this country in a time of need. Where is her leadership? Why does McCain have to cancel his campaign when he has a number two sitting there supposedly ready to take the helm?
-
Could it be because it's McCain's campaign and he is putting the needs of the American people ahead of the political bullcrap? It's obvious he doesn't want a bunch of political crap overshadowing what is happening right now so he has halted his campaign so everyone on his team can focus on the problem at hand.
Not to hard to figure out, unless your one of those people who has a hard on for Palin, and are just looking for any reason to trash talk her. Kinda like you Crocket.
What's more important? The Presidentail canidates doing their jobs dealing with this finacial mess, or watching to see if the number 2 person can look good in front of a camera?
You are spounting off on the number 2 issue so much you obviously don't care what the people actually running for the office of President do.

...or could it be he knows she couldn't do the job or would likely screw something up. This has everything to do wih politics, as he should have let her take control to prove she was ready to lead. That is the biggest question hanging over Palin's head, is she ready to lead. Now <cCain apartlly thinks the best option is to cancle his campaign rather than let Palin lead it. That says a lot.

Just out of curiosity, but how is his campaign staff going to help him work on this? Aren't their jobs campaign related? Are they all economy experts?

What? Do you want Palin to debate Obama on Friday? They'd be equals, fer shure!
The "campaign" isn't doing anything wrt the financial problems on Wall Street, unless you count scripting stump speeches as doing something, which would not suprise me.
The problem is in DC. Two out of three Senators are ignoring the financial situation. Guess who they are.

Why do you say that? Obama is meeting with Bush and congress today just the same as McCain is. http://www.nationalpost.com/news/world/uselection/story.html?id=832264
The only thing Obama didn't agree on was canceling the debate.
-
They're both in DC because Bush asked them to come.
What's the big deal with a resked on the debate? Slide it for a week or two or whatever. It's not like it would be anything you haven't heard before. It'll be the SOS we've been hearing for nearly two years and what you heard during the party debates.
The real problem is the bailout bill. Screw the talk, let's see some LEADERSHIP. They both say they have it, time to flaunt it on the national stage. Guy that doesn't screw the taxpayer in this deal wins.
Should be simple for two such accomplished leaders, right?
Ron Paul has more leadership than the two of them put together. He called this shot, told everyone we were headed this way.
His latest comments are here: http://www.usnews.com/blogs/the-home-front/2008/09/19/ron-paul-this-bailout-wont-be-the-last.html
What's your take on this huge financial bailout?
"It's more of the same. More debt and more inflation and more pressure on the dollar. Ultimately, although the markets are responding very favorably at the moment, I think it is going to be devastating to the dollar and to our financial situation in this country."
But don't we need to get these toxic assets off banks' balance sheets?
"Sure, they need to be removed. Somebody needs to suffer the consequences [but] not the taxpayer. Everybody knows that they have to be removed. They are priced too high. The assets don't have real value—some have zero and some have 10 cents on the dollar.
The people who had been making profits for all these years and dealing in all of this debt creation and derivatives—that now is becoming unwound—are claiming that it would be so painful if somebody went bankrupt and therefore we have to put so much burden on the taxpayer and on the dollar because the alternative is worse. But quite frankly, if they destroy the dollar and the dollar system, then they have a much bigger problem that they are going to have to deal with and it would be the collapse of the whole international monetary system—which is conceivable."
-
Why does McCain have to cancel his campaign when he has a number two sitting there supposedly ready to take the helm?
Because it's a crisis man, can't you get that? A bunch of Wall Street Crooks have demanded money. We must stop everything and give it to them.
-

It's McCain's campaign, not Palin's. It's pretty simple to figure out really, his campaign, he thinks the economic crisis is more important. So he shuts down his campaign to go to Washington to help.
Once again, McCain puts his country ahead of himself.

That's actually a good idea. The only thing I would add to it is...
If they work a deal out, then they actually have a debate. If they do not, all 535 sit their arses in their seats until something is worked out, then have the debate.

The crooks should go to jail, the businesses they ran into the ground need to be propped up.
They should be propped up in a fashion similar to how Chrysler Corp. was propped up. Chrysler actually repaid those loans in short order as I recall.

I don't believe that the Chrysler bailout was to the tune of $700 billion though, Elfie-and more than one company's involved. The only real glimmer of hope is that they are now trying to put some kind of oversight of the Treasury Sec.'s actions into the bill.

I'm not saying it is, I'm saying it should be, at least in regards to repayment.

I made good money off the RTC in the old savings and loan bail out days.
I think I have figured an angle to rake in a bunch off this as well, so I am all for the bail out, I don't care what it costs as long as its a net gain for me, its all about me, ME, ME !!!!!!!!

The Chrysler bailout wasn't to the tune of 700 Billion, but it was in the billions of dollars. And yes, I understand there are multiple companies involved in this. I don't see a reason why each companies debt cannot be structured the same way, with the same type of repayment plan

IF they put the oversight in, then it potentially can be structured. Otherwise...You'll have some companies' getting more bailout money than they origanally needed, and others' not nearly enough, if the Treasury Sec. is the least bit crooked or incompetent.
