Title: PT boats are undermodeled
Post by: Paxil on February 06, 2001, 10:46:00 AM
OK... after watching the History Channel show on PT boats last night... it seems the AH PT boats are way too soft. Any plane can sink one in a straffing pass (though they might go down too) but it doesn't look like too many were ever lost that way in WWII. Didn't they say one took some outragous amount of hits... (like 600?) and still keep going? Couple pings and our PT's are toast. Our PT's seem a bit slow too... and speed was one of their main assets. I think I saw someone talking that they couldn't even catch the fleet in a PT. That... combined with the fact they they mainly operated at night (which there is none in AH) make the PT's in AH death traps. It would be nice to see them them a bit faster, and able to take more damage.

Remember that it was 'some', a unique case.. that does not necessarily mean every boat would take as much.
That boat seems fast to me, but fleet is bit too fast... these later war ships...

We really need the night back, it would promote different tactics.

Don't forget the ultra realistic one magazine per weapon ammo load carried in the AH PT's. You fire the ammo loaded in the weapon and you're done for that mission.

I too agree that PTs are too slow.

I wonder though about how easy it is to kill one.  Is the PT really being destroyed or is the "pilot" getting killed?  I don't think that one straifing run should necessarily kill one as easily as it is now, but I could see how the pilot could be easily killed.

I vote for a bit more durability, and for the ability to reload weapons (except torps) at sea.

I think PT boats are a load of fun, and want to see them get more into the game.

It seems to me that the weapon loadouts are, for the most part, fine. The 37mm seems like it could use a few reloads, though. I don't know how many rounds were carried in a 20mm mag so can't comment on that.

As for damage, remember that these are wooden boats with most the crew exposed to attacks from above, and having 150-200 cannon rounds and a few hundred MG rounds impact on you, plus the splinters, will ruin anyone's day. If anything the guns are actually overmodelled, a few shots of .30 caliber should be able to kill all the gun crews and disable the boat (kill the helmsman).

IMHO, the PT is fine, and we're all just used to ostwind-like vehicles - forcefield-covered open tops with 3 feet of armor compressed into a few centimeters.
