Where are you getting $850 billion, as I read it on CSPAN it's still only $700 billion.

The thing that I don't about the logic behind all if this is:
The "plan" is for the gov to buy up all this bad paper in order to free up the banks to lend again.
What's being sold to us, the taxpayers, is that the gov will hold these assets and sell them for a profit when the the market bounces back...thus "costing"the taxpayer nothing in the long run.

First, what's to say the market WILL bounce back and profit will be made?

Second, if they think this will work, why not give incentives for those with the money to invest so they can buy up these bad assets?

I mean the gov is telling us this is needed very badly and in the long run it won't hurt the taxpayer.
Let's just leave the taxpayer out of it and give capital gains breaks to those that buy up these bad assets now and sell them later....if they sell and do not make a profit, let them write it off.
This cost the taxpayers nothing.....the only "cost" would be that the gov might not get as much "revenue" being that gave breaks to those willing to step up and relieve the banks from their mistakes.

Back... there are amendments to the bill...  according to the details I heard on CNN, I believe the talking head was campbell brown.. they said that there were additions like money to the states prevented from economic development because of their state being used by the government... Harry Reid, dem majority leaders state of nevada was given as an example, being that a high percentage of the state is owned by the US government and you cannot fly over 40% of the state, etc etc...  this was a clear attempt to buy western senators votes.

The Amount going to Wall St. is still 700B the other 150B are simply payoffs for the vote and other earmarks like the "mental health parity" thing.

As we get closer and closer to that trillion dollar mark....

Earmarks = bribes....

It's ashame that with all the so called brains on the hill that they cant write a simple peice of legislation to be voted one....and pass or fail it stands on it OWN merit....not earmarks and bribes for votes.

Wow, this is the worst congress we've ever had in US History. And the sadest thing is, they just pin it on the Republicans and then get out scotch free. Very very VERY sad. I hope that Nancy Pelosi gets back handed by Obama when she makes him lose the election.

Well, I can actually say thats true. Both Alabama Senators voted NO. I'm actually glad I emailed them my thoughts, short and concise, on the subject.

Later in the day I switched from media to CSPAN and watched Shelby give the Dems what for on the subject. He was the chair on banking a few years back and tried to get the reforms in place but was stymied by the Dems just like they did in the house in 04. Sad for us...

Here's a start.

Let's look at a couple of things in the bill.

SEC. 503. EXEMPTION FROM EXCISE TAX FOR CERTAIN WOODEN ARROWS DESIGNED FOR USE BY CHILDREN.

SEC. 504. INCOME AVERAGING FOR AMOUNTS RECEIVED IN 20 CONNECTION WITH THE EXXON VALDEZ LITIGATION.

SEC. 316. RAILROAD TRACK MAINTENANCE.

SEC. 317. SEVEN-YEAR COST RECOVERY PERIOD FOR MOTORSPORTS RACING TRACK FACILITY.

SEC. 309. EXTENSION OF ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT CREDIT FOR AMERICAN SAMOA.

SEC. 401. PERMANENT AUTHORITY FOR UNDERCOVER OPERATIONS.

Awesome.Perhaps someone smarter than me can explain what any of these have to do with a bailout.

They just can't help it.

I heard they are all chomping at the bit to get back to their campaigs for the election, and just put some lipstick on the house pig to bribe it's way through. They will be hiding under the unverifiable "The tone of the calls changed" mantra and hope things improve before Nov. 4 so they have another term for the voters to forget what happened.

what a disgrace.

lead is expensive. and i really don't want any more fecal matter in the east river.

using them for enriching tree chipper mulch would be beneficial to the environment.

Nope. While they're in session, we need to show up with steel bars, steel flat stock, and welders. We'll just build us a prison around them that is in keeping with their thievery.

We should take the "Tennessee plan" to D.C. When these fools around here wanted to force an income tax down our throats, a radio host got a group together to circle the capitol buildings for every vote. It took a year, but a bunch of those fools don't work in the capitol anymore  :t and they haven't brought that crap up again, either.

This bailout shows Congress at it's finest hour. Republican House members got their feelings hurt so they didn't pass the first bill. Dem's couldn't keep from making a political point. Warren Buffet called this situation a "Financial Pearl Harbor" and Congress can't even come to the table and come with a second plan without adding special interest earmarks to sweeten the pot for the second bill. Now this bill is up to 850 billion. That's in addition to the other 600 billion we have already spent. And this is for a plan that may not work. It is estimated that it may cost upwards of 2 trillion dollars.
And we the American people are supposed to have faith in these self serving deadbeats? We are supposed to believe that all this money to bail out wall street will trickle down us, the little worker bees out here in the real world? Congress, We are not mushrooms you can't keep us in the dark and feed us....(defecation)

So where is our (the American worker) earmark? Where is our bail out? Send us 700 billion dollars and forget about your trickle down theory and we'll show you how a trickle up reality works.

700 billion plus sweeteners = > 700 billion and the same essential bailout....now with sweeteners.

If this bill passes because of the sweeteners I will vote out every incumbent.  Adding sweeteners is not a reason to vote yes.  It's still a bailout.
