Went up last night with my squad mate FCMartin and did some formation work - was a lot of fun.
Martin flew the maneuvers very well, nice and smooth - being a good lead takes just as much skill as flying wing.
I think we did pretty good for not practicing!
I'd highly recommend downloading this high quality version of it, I put some effort into editing it, YouTube doesn't do it justice!
Right click/save-as - or stream.

OR I'll let ya watch it on YouTube as well.

Wow, Great Video!!!!!
Thank you for making that. You are the reason why I'll always look in this part of the forum. Great editing, great flying, great creative ideas, filming and just absolutely awesome work.
Very well done...
:aok :aok
More please :)
QFT from your other video thread. :)

Thank you sir! I get a kick out of formation flying and editing these videos. Just using Windows Movie Maker - but it seems to work nicely, not a whole lot of editing needs to be done for the most part, sometimes simple is better, nice and classy looking.

Outstanding sir. Thanks for using our squadron's skin as well :aok. May i ask do you both fly historical formations? I'd like to ask a couple questions if you don't mind. :salute

very well done cobra!! i'm wow'ed. Talk to me about track ir. never tried it. heard from some it made them sick to the stomach and its difficult to "learn" debunk those for me, and i might get very tempted to give it a try.
Thanks for posting your well done film.

Wow. I've tried formation aerobatics with my squadron members back in the old days of H2H. We always lost each other in the loops, banks, and turns.
I enjoyed it, nice job! :aok

Thanks man. I was apprehensive at first about just how it would work and how long it'd take to get used to it. There is a little learning curve, but being able to configure the response curves for each of the axis' to your liking really helps. It took me about a week or so to get totally comfortable with it - well worth the time spent learning/adjusting. I never got motion sickness or vertigo, lol. I'd reccomend putting together a FreeTrack system, cheaper than TrackIR and seems to be just as capable - could always upgrade to a TrackIR if the FreeTrack didn't support a game (although it seems to support all the major flight sim titles). http://www.free-track.net/english/

We (the LCA) do try to fly some type of loose formation the majority of the time, I'm always glued to someone's wing, I wouldn't call them historically accurate formations though - I can understand that not everyone is going to want to take the time to learn formations and maintaining position - but I enjoy being able to stick to someone, its challenging and it looks pretty slick from the ground or the enemies perspective! :D That is a sexy paintjob on the '51 isn't it? I'm a fan of it and the "Blue Nosed Bastards" one (forget the squadron designation).

Haha, yeah it certainly takes a lot of practice, the hardest maneuver to stay with is the barrel roll, as the wing always seems to want to be thrown on the outside, however if it's flown properly by the lead then the wing can stay in position. I primarily use the rudder to maintain lateral positioning instead of the ailerons - try to keep my wings matched with the lead.
Here's some AH film files of some pretty good rolls/loops I did with another guy on the training server, he's a good stick.

i believe it was yall that i took up a sortie with in the MA? Can't remember who it was (I'm Banshee7)

Yeah man - I remember ya - join us anytime!

Very nice Cobra! :rock
Do you record with AH Film and FRAPs during missions?
-
Thanks! I usually just record with FRAPS - I'm not sure how to edit nicely with the AH film viewer. Sometimes I'll record with both though.
-
The reason I asked was because FRAPs seems to take a lot of comp power to run and when I had both recording yesterday it was extremely hard to stay in formation. Didn’t know if you encountered the same… :salute

A+++++++++++ :aok

Yeah I know what you mean. I just built this new PC (Q9550 @ 3.83 ghz, 4 gigs ram, GTX 280 SSC card) on Vista 64 and it will run anything I can throw at it. Crysis with a bunch of FSAA or Flight Sim X completely maxed over a city can still bring it to it's knees though, lol. I don't notice much of a decrease in performance with FRAPS but on my old PC it would bring the FPS down into the single digits.
I absolutely love this quad core, on long missions I can alt-tab out, edit some film, browse the net, etc. then get back into the game - too cool.
-
Very nice work
The most important tool a good lead man has in his possession is a great wing man.
Very nice very nice indeed

How much would something like that go for? Just curious, I tried running Fraps durring flight today, but this laptop can't handle it.

Ah mine was ~$1700 in parts. You could run Aces High II with a lot cheaper system. I built this primarily because I wanted something near top of the line (currently) and able to run Crysis and FSX.
Case: AeroCool AeroEngine Plus - $84 - I love the rediculous turbine on the front, :rofl

You got the wrong case! If you're going to play FSX, you need the FULL immersion factor! :D

Sweet...
Which profile are you using for TrackIR ?
-
I've tweaked around a good bit with the curves for most of the axes, so it's pretty custom. I've been bumping the whole curves up on the sensitivity scale every few days now - have it really sensitive but it's still very easy to use, feels pretty cool to just think about where I want to look at I'm looking there, lol.
-
Looks pretty good! I like the way TrackIR works especially for the purpose of flying in close formation.
The number 2 pilot appears to have a tendency to get low in position during maneuvers and especially on the landing.
Watch and learn from some real professionals!

Yeah that's good stuff the Horsemen put on quite a show! I'd like to get something like that going for Aces High, would be fun.
I knew I was slipping low a few times, but we've never practiced together, just something we did for fun - once I get a feel for how he flys I'll be able to stay in position better. The roll was kind of strange, so it was hard to keep with him - I've only flown with one pilot that was able to fly lead on the formation rolls properly. A lot of guys seem to want to unload as they roll past 90* or start increasing the roll rate/pulling too much which will throw me low and outside. The landing I think was pretty good overall, did sink low a few times, the #2 should be lower than the lead and touch before the lead does.
It's harder to fly formation in the sim than it is in real life, that's for sure. That's why I like flying form so much, it's challenging but very rewarding once you get it right.
