Title: Skuzzy, XP Pro on this system.
Post by: bustr on October 03, 2008, 06:37:28 PM
Skuzzy,

THis is in reference to DREDIOCKS thread and a self build system for $700 from NewEgg. If I build that system will XP Pro run on it? And do you think from the hardware specs I will be able to play the game again at 512 textures with ground level FPS 50 and above? My current system at 256 textures gives me ground level FPS 30-40 not in a furball and I do not see cons as dots past 6000yds. They just suddenly appear icon and plane. I'm getting blindsided now by cons I used to see at 512 textures at a distance as a black dot outside of 6000yds.

I looked into that yesterday. There are XP drivers for it, so yes it would.

Oh ya, you would be able to run AH2 with Hi Res Textures and all maxed.

Thanks Motly,

Skuzzy I dont want you to bless it and put HTC in a lurch. Just want to know if I can get back to palying at 512 textures. I have not looked at or kept up with hardware since 2005. Reduceing to 256 tex is making the game play like AW. That was fine back then, but not now....... :)

Thanks Motly,
I have not looked at or kept up with hardware since 2005.

That was pretty much my problem, cept a small basic build I did for someone back in Feb or march.
but they were just using it to run some basic business software and to do Emails with.
So they didnt need much.

I dont see whty it wouldnt work with XP.
I havent seen anything out yet that would only work with vista.

I may be wrong. I just havent seen it.

Oh and since AH is more CPU dependant then anything else.
That 8400 CPU has been heavily endorsed by a bunch of members here

ASUS P5Q motherboard
E8400 or E8500 CPU
Power Supply: PC Power & Cooling 750W Silencer
RAM: G.Skill
500 GB Seagate Barracuda 7200 Hard drive:  Get the drives with the letters "NS" at the end of the Seagate part number.  They cost a little more, but are a better quality drive than the "SV" or "AS" drives.

G.Skill is one of the recommended vendors for RAM with the P5Q motherboard and does work very well with the P5Q.  The E8400/E8500 CPU's are best bang for the buck.  If you can afford it, I would consider an addon sound card and that would make a pretty nice system.

Skuzzy. I was going over the ASUS boards on Newegg and noticed that the most commonly listed memory standard is DDR2 1200.
Looking at the G Skill site.
They dont have any memory listed as being DDR2 1200 other then
[ P I ] G.SKILL DDR2 PC2 9600 CL5 4GB kit
http://newgskill.web-bi.net/bbs/view.php?id=g_ddr2&no=125 (unfortunately, Newegg doesnt carry it)

Can you clarify?

Why are we questioning if XP would run on it?  For drivers sake?

Here's What You Need to Use Windows XP Professional
• PC with 300 megahertz or higher processor clock speed recommended; 233 MHz minimum required (single or dual processor system);* Intel Pentium/Celeron family, or AMD K6/Athlon/Duron family, or compatible processor recommended

• 128 megabytes (MB) of RAM or higher recommended (64 MB minimum supported; may limit performance and some features)

• 1.5 gigabytes (GB) of available hard disk space*

• Super VGA (800 x 600) or higher-resolution video adapter and monitor

• CD-ROM or DVD drive

• Keyboard and Microsoft Mouse or compatible pointing device

That system is great! I went with the PC Power and Cooling 750 watt quad. My gosh, just the quality you see before you plug it in is great.

The new system I built uses an MSI P45 MB, e8400 chip, OCZ 1066 ram, and of course the Quad 750 watt ps. My gaming machine uses an e8500 chip overclocked to 3.8 ghz. It has an abit mb and DDR 800 ram. I forget the ps. It must work though. Still if I get a few extra bucks I'm going with the PC Power & Cooling PS in the future. I also use the asus DX sound card. It seems to work.

If I could encourage you to do 2 things I would push the e8500 chip, nothing wrong with the e8400, and the PC power and cooling PS. The thing about the E8500 is that if you like to overclock you can take it to 3.8 ghz rather easily since it has a 9.5 multiplier.

Good luck on the build. Keep us posted.

That's a really nice sytem for the price.  You'de be able to run 1024 textures and full graphic detail at 60 FPS and never go below that.  And of course it will run XP Pro.

Just finished my order from NewEgg. The CPU and PS were a package deal $60 off. I ordered a licensed version of XP Pro sp3 for ease of installation and upgrade path to another OS (maybe). And thank you skuzzy notice the GSkill RAM and the NS designation on the hardrive.

How much is that Roswell PS? Please look hard at the PC Power & Cooling PS.

I got $60 off on the PS + CPU combo. For the time being I don't want to over clock but will keep an eye if the RAM rates in the bios at 1066. The only game I play is AH. Dont think I need to bed the CPU in liquid nitrogen just yet....... :O

For the PS if you wish to read.

I've already read of some accounts where they run the E8400 at 4.0 ghz

I'l haveta see if I can find them again for ya.
I'm kinda surprised you havent gotten there yet

Dred,

Im hopeing my RAM is detected at 1066 by the system bios and a bit under 3G by XP Pro 32 since /3GB and /PAE are not available to XP 32. I'm waiting on the outcome of pricing for 24inch LCD at 2m refresh this year from COSTCO. Im using a ViewSonic 20" CRT G220f that will let me put the desktop at 1024 x 768@120 hz. Latency on my RAM for this build is 5. 20inch CRT is really a 16inch width viewable compaired to a 19inch LCD............

By the way....thank you everyone for your help and support on this. And skuzzy thank you for the info on the ctrl-I system memory and texture memory. I hunderstand why my old system has sunseted after testing all modes 128-512 anding watching the memory usage. I am able to help some of my squad mates accept the hardware reality of single CPU.

Have to monitor your temps. Running higher clocks will raise temps and may cut down on the life of your processor. Oc'ing will raise the temp of your cpu. There may be a trade off to running it a lil slower and isn't 3.5 enough??? what do you want your computer to do? O'clockers like the bragging rights to high clock speeds but they are not needed unless you are a o'clocking enthusiast. Keep it lower and cooler and you will insure longer life. Aces high does not need 4.0g and you will not notice much difference from 3.5 but... Go for it we will look ahead to the next build ...LOL

Use pcwizard or mbm monitor. This will give you temps. Keep em in the 30's if possible or low 40's.

I'm running my E8500 at 3,6Ghz but I tested it could do 4 on aircooling.

From what I've been reading  from some of the reviews. It shouldnt be a problem.
At least one user is using the exact same memory as you and another are using DDR2 800 (running at 1100)

For my own personal knowledge I'd still like to know and understand the story with the DDR2 1200 designation.

Checked a few other memory sites such as Corsair. Which has listed as compatable with that particular motherboard  memory ranging from
DDR2 533 on up.

Enjoy.

Oh and a word of note from my own experience. And noting problems, or I should say difficulties from other users on other sites.
when installing the CPU. If your not used to this 4 pin method they use now.
You may find 2 or 3 pins go in and click in place easy and 1 or 2 do not want to stay put.
I had the same problem the last two builds I did.

If you see the instructions you will see you are supposed to just push the pins in to install and turn the pin in the direction of the arrow to take the fan off.
On the last pin or so didnt want to stay put.
IF you have that problem. Turn the pin into the off position.push the pin down. then turn back into the locked position and it should now stay in place.
Thats the only way I was able to get the last pin all the way down without using excessive force

LOL someone should invent a tool that pushes all 4 pins down at the same time

I was going to Dred and I sure would like those bragging rights. However, at 3.8 this thing runs superbly. I need to leave well enough alone. I can't even believe I had that much discipline.
