NORFOLK (AP) -- A sailor on board the Norfolk-based carrier USS Dwight D. Eisenhower died after a plane struck him during a weekend training exercise.
The Navy says the incident happened at 8:16 p.m. on Saturday while the ship was on a training exercise off the coast of North Carolina. Navy officials are investigating.
The Navy has not identified the sailor, pending notification of the family.
Lt. Courtney Hillson told WVEC.com Monday morning that a press release with more information is expected to be released around 4:00 p.m.
One of the girls here in my office got an e-mail from her boyfriend who is serving on the Ike. Evidently (accourding to him) he got hit by a drop tank when the plane was launched. They're not sure if he just didn't get far enough out of the way, didn't duck enough, or if the CAT officer didn't see him there when he pushed the button.
Most dangerous 4.5 acres on the planet.
:salute to the sailor in question and all the men and women serving on the Ike.

Sad news. I love seeing video's of the flight crews on deck. Amazing the way they have it all work.

yes, i have heard that the flight deck is a very dangerous place. I think it is a credit to their training that there aren't more accidents.

Would have to agree on that last statement. It is more of a balet routine than anyhting.

Flight Deck is one place that you have to be 100% aware of what is going on. NO ROOM FOR ERRO.
RIP on the sailor who lost his life. :salute

My friend was a green shirt on the JFK, and when he showed us some of the videos of him in action, i was very impressed.
