Title: Planes With Best Low Alt Acceleration
Post by: WarTooth on October 07, 2008, 01:30:21 PM
Hi All,

Which planes have the best acceleration (say 250mph to top speed in level flight) at altitudes below 5k?

Thanks,

WT

Not certain where it falls in the acceleration "rankings", but the Ki-84 accelerates very nicely.

Dora, Spixteen, & LA-7.

I could be off my rocker, but the P39Q seems to have better acceleration down low than most anything in the 200-250 range.

actually, i flew the p39 a couple sorties last month. never got above 5k alt....and she handles suprisingly nicely.

typh is surprisingly good over 250 at those kind of alts.

Guys,

Thanks for the info.

BaldEagl the posted link is great stuff (http://gonzoville.com/ahcharts/index.php).  Is it up-to-date?

Thanks again,

It is mostly up to date. It doesn't reflect recent changes/additions (you'll note no P-39s, for example)

Gunna kill myself for saying it, but the LA has the best acceleration from 0 to whatever at no alt.

Like Krusty said, it's pretty up to date.  The comparisons all still apply.

The 109-K4, Spit-16, KI-84, are what I call "sneaky fast". You can be in an airplane thats as fast, or faster, and stretching one out to come back at em, and instead of pulling away "they" are getting closer. The kicker is you are sure you were at equal, or a slightly better, E-state. Most of all the K-4 and spit-16 are especially sneaky fast.

I agree that the Ki-84 is faster than most think it is. It has one major drawback to me though. It likes to jettison its wings at speeds of about 425 and above. So I can only manage maybe a 2k dive before I'm reaching critical speed for the wings. And yes, I know I'm flying a paper airplane. I do love it's cannons though. They have an extremely high ROF. I burn through 300 rounds really fast if I'm not careful.

ki 84 is not paper it is i think the least likely jap plane to burn it just cant dive

This is very true.  The Ki-84 almost never catches fire and seems to take some hits before cracking up.

As for diving, I like to enter the combat area only a couple thousand feet above the action at the most.  Being 8k above your target really isn't much of an advantage with the Ki-84.  Coming into a fight with just a little extra altitude has the added advantage of not "appearing" quite as threatening as that Typhie 6k over head.  Keep the Ki-84 around 250mph, where it likes to turn.  Use the vertical.  Rely on its good acceleration to rebuild E after shedding it.

La-7 by a wide margin.

La-7 by a wide margin.

Above 250 mph, yes. However, the Spit16, Spit8 and Spit14 walk away from it at low speed. Only above 250 mph does the La-7 equalize them and eventually gain the advantage as speed increases. The Tempest accelerates faster as well, with the 109K-4 being just about equal with the La-7.

The Ki-84 is inferior to all of the above and the Yak-9U is unimpressive, accelerating slower than the 109G-2.

My regards,

Widewing

You can safely dive it at about 450 mph. Above, you risk tearing something off, mostly both elevators: honestly I never shed wings. Compared to other jap planes, yep, it's harder for it to take fire, but not THAT hard, after all. The one thing I really hate, damage-wise, it's pilot wounded... 8 out of 10 times, it's the first thing I lose. :P The gun package is really good.
