Title: AAA - Guns
Post by: FirstTry on October 15, 1999, 09:23:00 AM
I dunno if anyone cares about this but i think the AAA-Guns at the airfields are way too powerfull. Reasons? Here we go:

1) AAA-units didnīt score that much kills during WWII. Sure, the german AAA units at the Kuban Bridgehead shot down 263 a/c during a 5 month period, but there were up to 400 russian a/c counted per day. The normal outcome of a direct engagement  between an aircraft and an AAA-gun was the gun destroyed or itīs personal badly hurt.

2) The guns were not that precise as they are in AH. Japanese Kamikaze flew their attacks against well armed US ships (speak about 2-4 40mm mounts (twin/quadrupple) and an average of about 7 or 8 20mm Oerlikons, not taking the 5in mounts into consideration).
But a lot of them got through this rain oī bullets without beeing seriously damaged, some even without beeing hit at all.

Maybe itīs just my poor skills, but iīm not able to survive a single strafing run against those AAA in AH. Even dive bombing doesnīt work all the time.

Maybe if your handle was secondtry, you'd get one!   (http://bbs.hitechcreations.com/smf/Smileys/default/smile.gif)

I have noticed the same thing.  They are on you like a horny savage rabbit. Pretty accurate too!

HiTech spoke about this on another thread, that damned accurate AA is a concession to gameplay, notably to help protect players taking off from being vulched by surrounding NME planes. It doesn't really attack bombers (you have to spruce it so they know where to drop) and dive bombing it's pretty easy to avoid their lead because your moving so fast. However even the most moronic AAA gun could probably swat a guy making a 4 kilometer strafing run at slow speed...

Well Sorrow, I think I have to say "Thank you" for two reasons:

1st: for letting me know about the AAA-accuracy beeing a contribute to gameplay

2nd: for making me sound soooo stupid ....

Beeing shot down during takeoff ? Well, if that ainīt what happend to a lot of Me262īs during the end of the war ... and surely to some Spit or Hurricane during BOB dayīs. Talking ībout realism ... whereīs that supposed to start ?

Next, that 4km strafing run does work (to some extend) using high speed/low altitude - as well as it worked in WWII. It was the approach pattern for F/Bīs to be preferred to the dive-bombing run due to lower g-forces (and lot of them werenīt equipped with dive-breaks either). Popping up behind some tree-line those a/cīs sure were some surprise for the airfield crew ...

I dunno if you got some experience with real-world AAA, but I do (though not on the recieving end ...).
Although these were shipborne systems, they were highly sophisticated using top-notch radar and computer systems and full-auto gun mounts (3in and 40mm).

Two things for you to think about:

1) These gunmounts were motor-driven with turning speeds of app. 60 deg per second. Now try this by using sheer muscle power and a crank-operated gun ...

2) Despite all that high-tech-stuff we werenīt always able to score hits on the towed target, moving about 200kts fast. Try imagine how it was with those poor guys in WWII, using mostly their eyeball Mk 1 Mod. 0
targeting systems and some low-tech gunsight against some fighter a/c at high speed ...

(The one thing I didnīt mention is the firing procedure those AI-ack-weenies use. Nobody shoots at circling planes or planes in a pop-up. Sheer waste of ammo ...)

The current ack model is not complete. Right now we just have 1 generic type of AA.  As the beta progresses we'll have different types of AA with different characteristics.  Everything from machine gun mounts to 88mm batteries.

Thanks Pyro !

I started looking into WB a few days ago and I like the AAA there. If the "ack weenies" in AH are going to be like that (maybe a little more accurate) itīs ok with me.

Hmm, sorry first didn't mean to make you feel stupid. As for the 4 mile runs, they just aren't feasable here. While I am happy to admit a 4 mile run to buzz an airfield at 300mph would be fun and damned hard for the AA to kill you at, in AH there is the flatland problem. Frankly it would be like trying to buzz an airfield in the middle of a saskatchewan prairie. They would see you coming a long ways due to the fact the land has no contours, trees visual breakups. And hitting you would just be a matter of leading you  (http://bbs.hitechcreations.com/smf/Smileys/default/smile.gif)
As for the Vulching and realism, I hope they NEVER get that real. It's allready present to a small amount but no-one wants to play a game where some donut knocks you off trying to take-off. I like the current system where if you want to take off under a furball you will still get vulched, just after a minute of climbing away instead of on the runway.
