Title: Ford does it 3 years in a row!
Post by: SD67 on October 12, 2008, 05:57:41 AM
Craig Lowndes brings it home for a Ford victory! :rock
Holden tried hard with only three in the top 10, one of which was second. Kudos to Kiwi Greg Murphy for his epic drive to edge out Steve Richards with 4 laps to go to clinch second place, if only he had a better car. :devil

Is there anything else than Ford and Holden in the serie?

Nope :D
It's the battle of the titans. The two biggest (only? Does anyone else make a car in Australia anymore?) Australian car manufacturers going head to head to compete for the love of their ugly stepchildren, the Australian Public. :lol
Once upon a  time when the class was called The Australian Touring Car Championship it was open to all makes who marketed a vehicle in Australia. In order to compete you needed to have built at least 500 models of whatever car you (as a manufacturer) wanted to race for sale in Australia. The car had to (apart from safety and basic race modifications) be identical to the car brought from the dealer.
IMO it's lost a little of what it had back in the old days. It's no longer a racing series that guides the Australian market like it used to and it's lost some of its appeal. The cars you see on that track have only a few similarities to the ones you see on the showroom floor these days. I think they are body (just the outside appearance, even these have been specially modified by the factories), drivetrain and engine. :lol Everything else is purpose built from the ground up as a racecar.

Seriously, 275000km on the clock, 2x around Australia towing a van and still going strong on the original engine!

Go Ford!  :rock

In all honesty, I think both the new release Fords and Holdens look rubbish but as far as this year goes... the Fords definitely look better.

I'd love to own a B series XR8

And as far as the 6 cylinders go, Holdens have got nothing on Fords. The Ford I6 will always sound better than the smaller Holden V6. Some knob in a VX with a silly 3" exhaust took off next to me a while ago... sounded like a powerful fart. If my car sounded like that, I'd be embarrased..... thankfully it doesn't.  :aok

Great engine, though.

If I am not mistaken the factory Ford turbo'd Inline 6 has more hp than the 6.0L Holden V8.   I read that a couple years ago in Automobile mag, dunno if it's changed.   Ford seems to have a good grasp on Australia.

fords' 6 is just under the  Kw at fly wheel as the SS commodore which is the baby eight of Holden. ford six turbo 240kw 5250rpm Holden SS commodore 245 Kw @ 5250 rpm. Puting the right extractor/exhaust system they say you can get up to 300 Kw out of the ford

The turbo I6 has less power but it is certainly faster than the 6.2L Holden.

The F6 Typhoon leaves the HSV 6.2L V8 Clubsport R8 a car length behind in a straight line.

The XR6 turbo, with a small amount of relatively cost effective work will out-muscle the XR8 pretty easily, I believe.

The Australian Ford I6 engine is a great engine... I have a mid 90s I6 and it is the nicest 6 cylinder engine I've ever driven. The auto gearbox is a let down, first gear is massive in it... 70 kmph before it'll shift to 2nd, where it really starts putting power down but other than that, it's a great engine. Loads of torque... sounds great for a 6 and they're tough as nails.

I still think I'd prefer the XR8 over a the XR6T.... Quicker off the line... sounds better and the speeds at which the XR6T would start to pound you would get your licence suspended in short order.

Hard to belt someone when you're so far behind, mate.  ;) The cameras couldn't get both cars in the same shot on the last lap.  :lol
