Title: I Love the Hellcat ...redux
Post by: Rich46yo on October 15, 2008, 06:18:30 AM
Yes I loved it before, and posted it here. But I love the new Hellcat even more.

First off nobody can tell me it doesn't turn better now or isn't more responsive in the turn. Ive turned it very favorably against the Spit-16 and yesterday forced an LA-7 to break off cause I dropped 1 flap and was getting inside him while spinning him around. Earlier, while sitting in a wirbel at a port, I saw a Nit stall fight 3 of our fighters so slow he looked like a corsair.

What this new Hellcat feels like is an FM2 on steroids.

Other things to love? The views are improved thanks to AH. The rear view isn't all that much a problem cause the Hellkitty just isn't an airplane you drive in a straight line. But the views now aren't bad at all. As a dive bomber the Hellcat might just be the best in the game. Its very stable in the dive and can pull out at unGodly speeds. The large ammo load basically gives you almost unlimited firing time. I cant ever remember running out of bullets in the Hellcat. Its a tough bird. Even a radiator hit gives you time to make it back to the CV. A full load of bombs and gas gives you decent range and strike capability. About 30 mins worth.

No wonder this thing cleared the skies of the IJN. I cant get enough of this new Hellcat. :salute

Isn't the Hellcat a radial engined bird and thus has no radiator?

I used to prefer the Corsair but the Hellcat walks all over it now... It's truly a fantastic aircraft. For an American aircraft it climbs like a frigging rocket, even with a full ord load.

I'm a fan, it's a great CV aircraft now.

Yeah actually I meant the oil pan or whatever its called, and meant it in comparison to a radiator hit. The R-2800 is actually one of the safer engines to dive bomb in due to its lack of a radiator. Also, in the game, the F6F-5 is not damaged modeled for a main fuel tank hit everytime you dive bomb in it like the Jug is.

I would also call it the Premiere non-perked CV bird now.

I recent that...  :)

Me too,  :D Wish they'd fix that. Most of all the "N" model, which is just to much like a work of art to sabotage with a poor damage model.

Course none of that takes away from the Jug at 30,000' escorting, and that beautiful sound of that turbo-charger. :salute

As far as I can tell, nothing in the F6F-5 flight model changed and it's been my favorite dueling fighter for a long time.

My regards,

Widewing

Same airplane to me too. Great plane for field attacks from a CV.  :aok

i mentioned this to a couple people in my old squad, and they said it wasn't changed. i think it is, as i didn't used to be able to turnfight 109's or spits in it....but have managed some kills on 109's, and had an awsome 1-1 going against a spit8 till 3 of his buds showed up., even then, i lasted another minute or so...and i don't think he made it home either :D as for the corsair, i used to have trouble with them when we got slow too.....no more though.

Seems the same to me, I never had problem out turning 109's, LA's, Spits (spit16 only for a few turns) and even Hurri's. Just looks better now.

Lost a low speed turnfight to a well flown Spit 16 the other day. He just kept slightly gaining on me which never used to happen on the old model. Next flight I realised I had been carrying rockets the whole time, Dohhhh!! Its a pain not being able to see the ordnance selection from the front view.

I can't say I've noticed any real difference between the old and new Hellcat flight models either. If it has changed, it is not by much.

<---- Longtime Hellcat dude.

There has been no change in the flight model, only the graphics.

Maybe you're just getting better.

I WOULD normally agree, but my hit % hasn't gone up, my kills/hour still about the same, k/d the same, etc.......

A little, tho I flew lousy yesterday. But I dont remember the Hellcat turning as well before, stall fighting as well, or being as responsive.

Really the thing that limits me in it is I'm almost always diving into targets with bombs against difficult odds. Taken up clean, with a drop tank, and the Hellcat is a very capable fighter plane. Against almost every enemy plane you might run into the Hellcat should have at least one advantage and maybe several. In my mind its the ultimate Jabo in terms of versatility. And in the Yank set alone it has tremendous competition for that honor.
