When i got my laptop Norton 2008 came with it. I installed it for when i browse the web thinking that itd be just as easy to disable as the other norton softwares in the past when i got to fly. i was wrong, and now i disco at least 2 or 3 times a day due to it. was wondering if anyone knew how to, or if you even can disable norton, then re-enable it after flying. :salute

The newer versions of Norton are horrible. There is a function to disable it, but it does not work, most of the time. The only way to disable it is to remove it from your computer and then it still leaves some things behind that stay active permanently.
Like Roxio's software, the only true way to kill it is to re-install the operating system.

I would not touch Norton or McAfee with a ten foot pole. Horrible software. What it does to your computer should be considered criminal. I would rather have the viruses. They are easier to get rid of.

Well I'm going to be building another one that is just mine so it will be a norton free zone. The one now isn't mine and really not bad just every once in awhile my screen will get choppy for a few seconds.

What do they do? (curious) What AV would you recommend?

They replace critical system files with thier own. When you remove the programs, they do not undo what they have replaced. Norton is particularly bad about not being able to disable it at all, even though there is a feature that is supposed to do it. Norton and McAfee both can corrupt data files.
The overhead they add to everything you do on your computer is simply outrageous. There is no excuse for it
They are the reason why so many software companies recommend disabling them when you are downloading files.
I do not make any recommendations. I just do not use them any more. They are simply not worth the headaches to me. That is not a recommendation. I have configured my computers where they cannot get viruses based on how viruses are implanted. Most people would not go to the extremes I have as it would limit what sites you could visit (no Youtube, no flash sites, no java powered sites...) and what email you could actually read (no html of any kind, only plain text..).

I had a virus hide in norton,setup it's own folder in quarrantine folder so norton ignored it.
Face it,crackers target the bignames,M$,norton,ect. so it's a safe bet if you use these your as safe as leaving your door unlocked and a sign up saying free stuff help yourself!!
I even have Norton offered for free,no thx. too many other "free" AV's out there and some excellent pay versions...nod32.... :aok
