The railroad from Anchorage to Fairbanks Alaska is about 360 miles. A train goes each direction everyday. When the snow is deep (several months out of the year) they kill an average of at least one moose per run. Alaskans sign up for a roadkill/railkill harvest list/lottery. When your turn comes up you get a call that your moose is at something like mile 222.2. You then get to, and have to harvest it.

The rail lines from the Canadian prairies to Vancouver are littered with carcasses of animals. They feed on the grain lost by the cars.

In Alaska the moose walk on the tracks because often the snow is too deep everywhere else. When a train comes they are afraid to get off the tracks because they know they will slow way down in the snow. It is not uncommon for them to turn and charge a train.
