Title: "Inadequate School Lunches..."
Post by: texasmom on October 22, 2008, 10:53:08 PM
Is always the complaint.... "too much sugar content, too little fruits & veggies, it's making all of our kids obese!"

I hate hearing that complaint more than almost anything in the world! Don't those idiot parents realize that school provided lunches are not only a courtesy... but also OPTIONAL?

Whiners. Pack your kids lunch if you don't like it.

 :rofl  Funny post.

I think the complaints about the kind of lunches they serve at schools should go way beyond their nutritional value, however.  But this is a huge topic, and we'd have to get into everything that's wrong with the farm bill, which I'm not prepared to do. ;)

School lunches are just the first phase of control and eventually they will have you depending upon their drugs.

One local district won't allow homemade lunches. Everything must be labeled for nutrition (i.e. Lunchables). My sister had a spasm over that one.

That's ridiculous.

I'd crack it if that were the case.

The meals would have to be absolutely incredible for me to be fine with that.

Or perhaps parents should have to sit a short nutrition course if they wish to deviate from the school food. Too many parents have absolutely NO clue. "Oh, 99% fat free, that's great!" No, no, no, no, no, no! 2% fat milk? NO! A lesson on label reading and what they actually mean would be an excellent start. They are very misleading and if you haven't spent any time looking into what their claims mean, you'll get tricked.

Something has to be done about fat kids. I was at the supermarket today and I could have fit my body 3 times into this girl who couldn't have been older than 16. It was disgusting, she was so unbeliveably fat for her age. I'm 6' and 187 lbs and I could have stood inside one of her thighs. I felt sorry for her but sicked at the same time.

Not to be harsh, but you just know that she'll end up in the public hospital system with a myriad of health problems which I will be paying for.

n ot only that, but the fact that todays kids don't get the excersize.......they can eat whatever they want, IF they went outside and played, rather than sit in front of their games or tv.
my diet sux.......too much sugar, everything i like is labeled as fattening..........i'm 6'2, 163#. have been this weight since i was 20. i'm 46 now.

Funding for many school lunch programs is dependent on funding that is only attainable if they prove they are providing meals that meet the daily nutrition needs.  A lot of money is tied up in the free/reduced cost lunch programs as well.

School lunch programs don't opperate for profit but do have to cover costs.  When your state legislators say they are going to help improve children's meals with new nutrition requirements make sure they also agree to fund it.

That all being said my only complaint on school lunches was when they stopped having 2% Milk.  I know drink skim almost all the time but man that always bugged me back in school.

And she tolerates this why?

They ever tried that here. And they would get a hardy ho ho and a kiss my Mo$%# arse.

They sent a note home last year asking parents to not send peanut butter for lunch with our kids.
After looking into it. It seems one kid in the entire middle school is allergic to peanut butter.

So I sent a note back.
(I think I still have a copy on file)

"While it is terrible and I feel badly that there is one or two children in the school who have allergies to certain foods.
You dont inconveinence and entire school population for one or even a few children.

I know of two children that in two years are going ot be attending township schools.
One is highly allergic to products that contain meat.
The other is highly allergic to products that have dairy in them (Milk, Eggs)
Is the school planning on not serving foods that contain those products?
Or are you going to separate the children from those products so they do not come in contact with them?

When the school starts paying my food bill. Then you can tell me what lunches not to send with my daughter.
Until that time. I, and I alone, will decide what foods my daughter brings into school for lunch. and that may very well include. As it does today
A peanut butter sandwich"

I waited two days then called to make sure they received and read the note.
" We've gotten a few letters like yours. I see your point." was the responce.

One thing I noticed is public schools talk a good game. And in most cases everyone goes along like a bunch of lemmings.
But typically easily cave in and crumple when faced with one or two angry parents.

Your sisters school system does it because the parents let them get away with it.

Better idea.
Make sure the money goes to where its supposed to go and the funding wont need to be as high.
Most of the time. Particularly here in NJ. Any "funded" program of any type.
By the time the money gets dow or applied to where it needs to be. Its been filtered into the pockets of so many people that only a fraction is left.
THIS is the main problem I have with socialised anything.
Only a fraction of the money funded ever gets to where its supposed to be applied to

2% milk is disgusting, as is skim

Tastes like water with a splash of milk.

As the saying goes about whiskey
If I'm drinking milk I drink milk.
If I'm drinking water. I drink water

then again I dont like "light" beer either
Tastes like seltzer

That one child may have such a horrible allergy that simply opening the peanut butter and jelly sandwich a couple dozen feet away could start a reaction.

So would it be fair to tell that child to not come to public school and become an outcast homeschooler or request the other students to refrain from peanut butter?  Working as a camp counselor I've seen how quickly and deadly the reaction can be.  Have you seen a child's throat swell shut in a matter of 90 seconds?  It is terrifying and thankfully the child had an epi-pen and we weren't far from the hospital.

Look at it from both sides before getting all ornery over it.  When most children realize whats going on they would rather have thier friend around and leave the PB&J at home.

In response to your funding issues I have to ask:  How many school lunch programs have you run?  Or better, how many cafeteria's have you actively worked in?

My mother is a Child Nutrion specialist, she runs the program for Asheville City Schools and before that helped run the lunch programs for Buncombe County Schools.  I've often discussed her jobs and work.  I helped run the meals at the camp for a few summers, 300-400 people fed in a couple hours daily.  Ordering and stocking the supplies has furthered my understanding of how the process works.

So where does your knowledge of school lunches come?  Just reckonings?

Only a fraction of the money funded ever gets to where its supposed to be applied to

Have any proof for your claim?

Skim milk is just milk flavored water, but just like quitting cigarettes, it sucked at first but is much healthier in the long run.  Now 2% and whole milk tastes too thick for me.  Personal tastes.

I don't drink cheap american beer (PBR, Bud, Busch, etc.) for the taste by any means.  But the drunk part is fun for us poor s.o.b.'s

Yes, the parents have the option of paying for a school provided lunch. I'm hard pressed to believe that (in Texas no less!) that a school district doesn't allow a child to pack their own lunch.

One local district won't allow homemade lunches. Everything must be labeled for nutrition (i.e. Lunchables). My sister had a spasm over that one.
I've heard of that for in-classroom, let's share cupcakes with everyone (like classroom christmas parties, or halloween parties or whatever)... but not for an individual child's own lunch.

I worked in a Nursing Home for 2 Years as a Cook and Dietary Aide.

They eat the same stuff I ate in School when I was a kid. So if you liked School lunches get ready, because when your old and can't take of yourself, you'll get to relive all those great school lunches you ate as a kid, only this time they might be pureed.

The majority of lunch programs today are support by the state and the welfare systems. The schools rely on these programs for funding.  So the cheaper the food and consequently poor quality the more money the schools retain.  Hmm.... makes you wonder. :(

Here in NC the school cafeteria's budget is completely seperate from the school's budget.  So at the school level (not the state wide funding level) they cannot just take money from the lunch budget for other expenditures in the school.  I'm fairly certain the system is similar in many states.

Palette de porc provencale (grilled porc with ratatouille)
Pommes rissollées ( apple  with  salt butter* caramel)
Yoghurt ( no stinky cheese today ;))

So would it be fair to tell that child to not come to public school and become an outcast homeschooler or request the other students to refrain from peanut butter?

YEP. You dont inconvienience an entire population for the sake of 1 or 2

I talked about this very subject at length with the mother of the two children mentioned.
She is in complete agreement. In fact. she said it first.
And her kids ARE highly vulnerable just as you say.
Anytime she buys something new she actually has to call the manufacturer to make sure it doesnt contain any of the ingredients her kids arre allergic to.
she tells me its amazing the things food producers add dairy and meat by products to.
Her food bill costs an absolute fortune.

what about the kid. who that's all they are willing to eat for lunch? (and there are quite a few of those out there also)
He or she should just go hungry?
Are our kids not to eat peanut butter at home because they might bring some of the residue to school with them?

No. you make provisions for those few children to eat separately from the rest of the population.

Have any proof for your claim?

I have looked at it from both sides.
Like I said. I feel badly for the kids. but. You make special provisions for the kid. You dont inconvenience an entire school population because of one or two kids.
By and large I just throw money on my kids lunch account and let her just buy her food at school.
though lately to save money I've been making her lunch more often. mostly its lunchmeat. But sometimes it is peanut butter.

The school did the thing that makes more sense.
The have a special area set aside for those children with special requirements.
Because it is simply unrealistic to protect against everything in the typically common area

On lunch programs. no I dont have experience on school lunches.

But all you have to do is watch how politics works in this state to see the obvious.
an example was just talked about on the radio here yesterday. Only about state workers.
Our emperor..err I mean govorner cut state jobs by 3% to save money.
Yet state wages on average rose something like 8%.
One would think that your every day state worker got themselves a nice above 6% inflation pay raise.
Nope.
When looked at closer it was revealed that the positions making over 100K per year got an 11% increase. (almost twice the rate of inflation)

On another front.
Our King...err I mean governor is proposing our own economic stimulus plan and bailout package to "Help with home forclosures"
Yet on closer examination it is only going to be applied to 3% of foreclosures.

Our lord and master err I mean governor says "We cannot stand by idly and do nothing"

This is the same person. the same wall street expert who claimed he saw "nothing  to indicate" the economy was in trouble at the same time the markets were crashing and the bailouts were being proposed in Washington.

All you need to do is look at our avid districts Newark, Camden etc and see the money that is poured into those areas school systems with no improvments made. Then look at some of the salaries being paid to political buddies to figure our whats going on.

Ehh least we agree on something LOL
