Title: Memorable Dogfights
Post by: macerxgp on October 28, 2008, 05:19:24 PM
Yesterday, I replaced my old, venerable SideWinder Pro with an st290. I was in two duels I will never forget. Both of them were against spixteens, but these guys weren't dweebs by ANY standard. The first one was over water, and went feet dry and feet wet a good number of times. I can't remember any specifics, but this guy was a really good stick.

The second, I remember like it just happened.

I had upped my own spixteen, mostly because I had gotten tired of taking forever to do anything. I was near a coastline, and dived over a shallow cliff. There, I spotted a spit coming feet dry towards a good sized mountain. I pursued, and it soon became clear this guy was a DAMN good stick. We hadn't seen each other for more than 15 seconds before the both of us were screaming uphill, dodging trees only 10 feet below us. I clearly remember raising my left wing about 10 degrees to barely miss a treetop. Immediately after that, he rolled inverted and dived down the face of a 500 yard cliff, and I followed on his heels. He jinked and turned, and I stuck with him, taking a few potshots, only barely missing now instead of being way off, thanks to the st290's rudder twist control. We went on this way for a good five minutes, jinking and turning and diving, all while sticking to the cliff like glue. I never did shoot him down, only getting an assist after another friendly fighter came and dived on him from 1k to 2k alt above us after I had about a second of lag.

:salute I salute that spit driver, whoever he is. That guy is one damn good stick.

I was in a D40 IB to a base I believe was on uterus map. (A6 maybe? long ago...can't remember) and I had ended up on the deck about 3-4 miles out from the enemy base. I was climbing when I saw a spit16 screaming down on me. I worked him for a good 5 minutes till he was finally co-E with me. This was probably the biggest deck fight you have ever seen, and I'm glad we got away from the action a bit.
Anyway, we were in a turn for a good couple minutes, both of us each gaining the upper hand every once in a while. I was full flaps and I bounced off the ground a few times (that's how low and slow it was), trying to fly my big plane around trees, hills on the shore, etc while the nimble spit16 was easily weaving through. I eventually heard his engine go out, I thought I was free, until I figured out taht he was simply trying to slow down. I checked my E6B very quick, only to see that my Range was 1. Right then did my engine shut off. I rolled my plane to a stop on the ground as I watched the spit go about 1.5K away from me. Then he turned around, going slow with his flaps out, and flew by me, tipped his wing and flew on home.

I dove in on Laser once, me in a pony and him in a spit16. He just stepped to the side I flew by and he hoped right in behind me and killed me dead :lol Pawz did the same thing to me with his 38. Both engagements lasted all of 2 seconds. That was like a year ago and I think about that everytime I dive in on someone now.  :lol

1)i was in an A6M5B. got into a fight with a lone A20. next i knew it was 5 vs me. A20 bugged(extended). hurri2c, another zeke, FW, spit, and the A20 returned. very memorable, as i lasted almost 3 minutes, scored a nice engine hit on the FW, hurt something on the A20, and every one of em tried HO'in me. they know who they are.   :D

2)was in my hellkitty, and see a low P38. i drop in on him, and a 2 or 3 minute fight ensues. he kilt me.  <<S>> shuffler. was a good knock down fight...no ho's. i return in the cat, now there's 2 38's flyng together, lower than me, and one a couple miles north, almost co-alt. i go for the co-alt, as he's comming this way. we merge...cold.....fight ensues. it drops alt, and next i know, it's 3 38's vs me. i died. it was shuffler again.(GGRR) for some ungodly reason, i come back AGAIN, but this time in a 38J. i see 2 lower then me together, one lower than me alone. i make a run for the lone guy.....i loaded the crap outta him, and overshot......but no kill. in the process, the other 2 were on my 6. at this point, there were some squaddies on the ground under us, calliing me to drag the 38's to them. i didn't, as this was tooo much fun.(they were only trying to help me out). shuffler got me again.

3)couple days later, i see shuffler on, and thinnnk i see his icon. we merge(cold) and in only 2 or 3 turns i'm in the tower. <<S>>soulss. 3 momre fights with him, and i THINK i was actually gaining an advantage on him. i look back, and see a 38 closing hard, so i chop throttles, and pull round into my attacker. i augered.  :rofl both shuffler, and soulss, are good fights, and great guys. got a good film from soulss......i was easily able to see my mistakes.

4)last night. off the cv near A37 was a niiiice furball. took my hellkitty up, and got myself a couple kills, and thanks to slipknt, lowzx, and a couple others in the Satans Playmates, i was actually able to land.(for the first time in a couple nights!)
5)after the cv furball, i came across stang, then bronk in their airacobras. that's in another post. they flew them VERY skillfully.

AW Big Pac, Full Real.

I am cruisin at 20k or so in my 262 .. co-alt dot .. I set sail toward it..
..con another 262!

'This oughta be interestin..wonder if he's any good in it?' I think ..and grin ..because not many are.

Well.

From 20k we fought and exchanged snap shots ..some hits on each of us, right down to the waves.
He ran outta gas first and hit the water .. I ran outta gas a few minutes later . . was a full tank fight for both of us.

Was an awesome fight Kid, and I still remember how intense it got.
At the time, Kid was T-38 instructor pilot at Williams.
He knows Jets :)
It was a blast!!

Probably the wierdest dog fight I was ever in was an AR234 vs a 262. Lusche was in the 262. This fight probably lasted for 15 minutes. You would never think it would take so long. But remember if you want the con to be on your 6 if your in an AR234. We were diving, climbing and doing somewhat of an split s ever time he got close to my tail I tried to open up with the rear cannons so the then had to swing wide one way or the other. Finally the AR ran out of fuel and lusche got the kill. Still was a great fight and Lusche was very respectful.

First one that comes to mind was a scenario in Airwarrior based on the Italian air war.  Del and I were in a pair of 417 squadron Spit Vs when we spotted a pair of 190s above and behind.  No vox in those days, and we both typed the classic "you go left, I'll go right." about the same instant.  Down they came, we broke opposite ways which I think screwed them up as each tried to turn in on one of us.  Del shot the one down that turned in on me and I got the one on him smoking and fleeing for home.

They had all the advantages but we turned it on them, and it was one of those moments where the history comes alive for just a second as you get sucked into the cockpit and it feels about as real as a flight sim can make it.

Most of the good ones are from events...

Bearkats and I reamed the Japanese air force in one frame of the Aleutians FSO.
2 38's vs 30zekes. That was a good one.

I had one some time last week against a few of 71 squadron.
i headed out to a con over the water that turned out to be 5 of the buggers all at staggerd heights.
OK first thought was run llike hell then nah its only a game so in i dived.Point guns at enemy and fire, twist turn dive climb
did this for what seemed like a few minutes trying to keep a eye on everyone and my six clear.
Not a hope in hell they were coming in every direction i got a few hits on a couple of planes and saw fuel  leaking, then i got hit from behind as i tried to turn out the way.I went down but it was a fun fight.
so i reupped and did it all over again.

Mid-war player.
My memorable fights are the ones I got frustrated sooo much. Lose or win wasn't the excuse to get upset. The fight was hard fought.... Both played their options based on what was taking place during the fight....
I review the films and to my surprised, the enemy pilots were the ones that "handed" my butt in a silver platter when I first started.
Now that was rewarding !!!!!

Salute gents !
You know who you are !

Aye Phil .. I still remember my first kill of Stiletto from AWDos days.. he useda just own me anytime, anywhere.

A year goes by, I drop onto two spit 9's flyin loose pair, in my spit 9.
One heck of a fight ensues, I take out the trailing wingman when he just made a bad move reversing in front of me.
A snap shot, but it hits home right into the cockpit at 100 yards out .. he blowed up guud.

Then the other spit who was turnin hard ended up with less E than I had, I used him as a chew toy after
feinting and drawing him up in a climbing left turn, pullin just hard enough that he couldn't get the lead he needed..
..he realizes the rope, slams hard over the top. I see him do it and do the same, -BOOM- ..a kill has been recorded, Stiletto bites the dust.

I was amazed.
Two Musketeers down in their vaunted Spits (the only planes they flew most of the time)
..from a Mustang driver who took a holiday off and flew a spit :)

I haven't flown for a while, but when I did it was usually late night.I usually fly the Spit IX.For whatever reason whenever Agent360 was on late,it seemed like we'd run into each other, and usually near co-alt,and usually 1v1.

Every fight I've had against him was memorable.

Any fight that's a good 1v1. No HO shots and no running, they would stay and fight. first one off the top of my head in recent times was me(P51) vs RedTop(spit8) around 15 to 11k.

SubwayCH, he was in Yak and i was in a F4F i think, last at least 5 mins on the deck. couldn't believe the way he kept it off the ground. he never tried to extend just a constant slow turning and rolling fight. <S> SubwayCH

Two come to mind both recent.

I was deacking a base in an A20 and took a hit from the flak as I bombed them.  There was an F4U in the area, he got the kill.  I am a decent hog pilot, and knew he would be meet me half way, so I took a F4U-4.   I had lots of alt when I saw him and dived down expecting an easy kill, boy was I wrong.  He used perfect evasion tactics, and quickly equalized our E states.  He then proceeded to make the perfect moves to keep me from getting on his 6, but keeping me close all the time.  With one deft move, Saber reversed and sent me to the tower.

Crudah (sp) did something similar a few nights later.

With the E state I had, I almost never lose, I blew it..

Well played gentlemen <S>

I've been really lucky over the last week or two.  I have had some sweet 1v1s and 2v1s.

Most memorable were the fights with Coprhead.  He was in his P40 (One of the best I'v come across in it) and I was in the Mossie.  I didn't want to extend or out climb him but instead turned and rolled with him.  Lasted for a long time until I finally took off a flap and he stalled out at low speed.  I recommend anyone have a 1-1 with him in that thing. <S>

Last night I had a 2-1.  Again I was in a Mossie and a F4u jumped me.  I force an overshoot and while climbing with him a P47d40 jumped me.  He pinged me up but again I forced an overshot.  The fight ended in a hanging stall fight with both of them.  Probably lasted a good 30 secs to 1 minute.  Somehow I got both.  <S>

These types of fights are what keep bringing me back.

too many memorable ones to mention here but below is a link film from one that still sticks out in my mind and I still like to watch from time to time. I was on my way to dive bomb some spawn campers in a KI84 when I come across a pony and dropped bombs to fight. While engaged 2 of his buddies come along for the ride. Now I am fighting 3 ponies while in my lone KI. went on forever or so it seemed and even though I got greedy when I finally got a shot on one of them and lost I was still quite proud that I had held on like I did and I almost got them all.

This is VMF-251's AAR from Frame Three of the October FSO (Tunisia)

-----------------

Date of Action: October 10, 2008
Base of Operations: c50
Division Assignment: Red Flight

VMF-251 took off at 2304 with ten F4F Wildcats. Squadron circled carrier to form up by flights:

Red Flight
Saxman
Hammerr
Drazz
Hazerdly

Blue Flight
MEF4UD
Herder
Trol
trumpman

White Flight
CpMorgan
Viper65

After second circuit of task group VMF-251 turned SE on a heading of 225 to rendezvous with A-20s of 332nd Flying Mongrels and P-40Es of Air Raiders. Rendezvous point was set for sector 16.7.4. Red and White Flights to climb to 25,000ft, with Blue providing top cover at 28,000. Air Raiders reported contact with enemy aircraft and engaged. VMF-251 and 332nd proceeded for rendezvous.

Squadron reached 16.8.4 area and turned 180 to rendezvous point, and continued climbing through 20,000ft. However shortly after turning squadron encountered high group of 109s at about 25-30,000ft. Saxman advised C/O 332nd of contact, and 109s turned in to squadron.

VMF-251 forced to engage by high 109s. Saxman ordered tanks away. Drazz claimed 109 at 2329. trumpman shot down 2330, and Trol shot down 109 at 2330 and was shot down at 2331. Herder forced enemy into water at 2331. Saxman and Hammerr engaged alone with multiple 109s, and Saxman claimed one at 2331, before bailing out after sustaining critical damage at 2332.

CpMorgan shot down two 109s at 2332, and Drazz claimed an additional victory at 2332. MEF4UD crashed at 2332. Hammerr claimed two 109s at 2334 after downing one and forcing other into the water, and Drazz claimed third 109. Herder bailed out at 2334, and Hazerdly crashed. Viper65 claimed 109 at 2335, crashed at 2337. Hammerr claimed third 109 at 2337.

Drazz and Hammerr engaged with last of 109s while CpMorgan withdrew. Drazz out of ammunition but continued to press enemy until 109s finally disengaged, allowing last of squadron to return to base.

CpMorgan successfully recovered aboard carrier at 2349. Drazz and Hammerr back aboard by 2352. Hammerr's aircraft lost due to incident while rearming on deck. Drazz shut down at 2354.

-----------------

Altogether, VMF-251's ten F4F-4s were engaged by 15 109G-2s (16 launched but 1 disco'ed) of JG2. We were caught flat-footed and still climbing for altitude when JG2 attacked.

During the engagement seven of our F4Fs were shot down. However despite being forced to engage from a position of disadvantage against opponents that could out-run and out-climb us at will we shot down twelve. Of the remainder one towered on return to base, and only two rearmed to continue the frame.

One of 251's survivors towered on return to base. A second successfully recovered aboard the carrier and was rearming when a bug flung his plane off the back end of the boat. The last survivor elected to tower out at this point rather than continue alone in the frame.

Easy.   I had only been playing about 4 months and came across SADS otd, near 62 on Uterus.  We were co-alt, OTD and a 10 minute 1 on 1 ensued.   He got my Friedrich, but not before almost stalling into the drink at less than 90.   I was doing about 90 when he got me, he had to perform extreme scissors to keep behind me.   I almost got out of it, but he got me.

No 2nd, that was intensity and I crave it in this game.

I recently had a good 1v1 against AKHog.  He was in a typhie and I was a 109k4.  The fight can be broken down into two segments.  The first where I had the advantage and was doing pretty good.  The second, after we disengaged to get away from ack, I was totally pwned.  A big  :salute AKHog, great fight and lots of fun.  Thanks
